Wisconsin goes to 6-5

Both they and Ohio State look awful this year. B1G in general is far from wonderful outside of Sparty, Maryland and Purdue

Maybe if you whine some more it'll stop?

The obsession with Wisconsin makes people look like crybabies that they beat us. We lost to them so you get excited when they lose now? Come on.... I'll just ignore the continued obsession each time they lose. No worries.

No problem, but please understand that posters discuss Duke, UL, IU, and several other teams that most basketball fans like to discuss. That is why this is a basketball board. That is also why that I clearly titled it as I did, so that those who did not want to read about it would not be suckered into entering the thread. I try to let those who might not want to be bothered by a thread, know exactly what it is about, so you won't waste your time. So, if you joined the discussion, you had nobody to blame, but yourself. Being that there are currently two other threads in the top 3 on the board, that involve UNC losing and KU against Oregon St, I think it is obvious that a lot of people want to discuss other teams. After all, there is only so much that we can rehash, about UK.

I don't hold any animosity towards Wisconsin per se - I just get a kick out of Bo getting his ish kicked in without the POY, the other first round draft pick, and the three other seniors who are all currently on NBA rosters.

I thought he could take 4 homeless guys and his grandmother and chop down the Golden State Warriors?

I thought he was a real "X and Os guru" - you know, the kind that always wins when he has equal or better talent?

Now he's barely 500, has lost 3 games at home, including to 2 mid majors.

Was he just out talented by Milwaukee and Western Illinois? Or is it actually possible that great coaches can still lose games when they have equal or better talent?!?

My Rafter's logic is short circuiting! Help me!

Only our coach can lose basically his whole team and start over every year and compete at the highest level, can't say I feel bad for them, nobody felt bad for us the year we went to the nit

Are Josh Gasser and Traevon Jackson on NBA rosters? I didn't think they were.

Well, the Wisc '15-'16 wiki page has them as part of the Nets/Wizards respectively, and I wasn't going to run through all of them.

The rest of the point doesn't change either way.

Ah alright. I see what you're talking about. Looks like Gasser went to play professionally in Germany while Jackson hasn't caught on anywhere.
No disagreement on the rest. Obviously Wisconsin was going to take a step back from the last two seasons, but it's still surprising to see them lose three home games in a month with two of them to mid-majors.

Right. And it's no disrespect to Bo. I mean, he seems like a cranky old ding dong based on his "rent a player" quips regarding a system that the coaches (Cal, K, Self, etc) can't change.. but the guy is clearly a good coach.

I'm just poking at the rafters logic that throws everything about variables and probabilities out the window and comes down crashing on Cal's Xs and Os every time he ever loses a game since he has more talent most of the time.

I mean, K is in the argument for the best college coach of all time, and he's lost plenty of games since 1990 (though few relatively speaking, like Cal at UK), and he's had better talent than the opponent in like 95+% of games in that time frame.

Sometimes you just lose.

You've been dead on with all of this. Going all the way back to Hank Iba, there's been a sort of cult that develops around conservative coaches who rarely have elite players- a lot of "oooh, he's a basketball genius, what could he do if he had any talent" (you even saw some of this with Tubby at UK).

The reality is that Hank Iba only ever won at the highest level when he had the first great 7 footer in college bball history, and Bo Ryan had a ton of early NCAA flameouts until he got 2 NBA-caliber frontcourt players (accidentally, in Kaminsky's case).

There seem to be some severe limits to how far a "genius" tactician can get you, if he doesn't have the players.

I am a crybaby about that loss. I know the other UConn losses would have given us titles, but I wanted that shot at Duke for 40-0 more than just about anything (and spend $1000 per ticket in January to see it). Wisconsin winning every game or losing every game doesn't change that fact. It does show that they had lightning in the bottle though. Does make it hurt a bit more. That team (with a couple bad officiating calls and a couple bad Cal calls) was THIS close to history and the ULTIMATE trump card for any argument with any group of fans. So yes, 8 months later, I'm still a crybaby over the loss.
