Willis on the floor period

Please stop with "7 points"

2 of his points was completely generated by Matthews
2 of his points were in a fast break where Ulis set him up for a easy lay in.
And the 3 well make of it what you want but it touched every part of the rim and he back board and finally went in.

I agree skal isn't playing good. But those mins go to Poy, Leee, Mathews.

You should be ashamed!! Logical and reason has no place here. An objective assessment of Willis play is a bit like telling a 4 year old that Santa is a fake.

He was the best player in the State as a HS senior and with the way he is now playing deserves the playing time he is getting.
What about Skal? Do you think he is earning and deserving of the minutes he is getting?
Is he playing well enough to start? Many fans are asking themselves these questions.
How do you see it?

I think Willis would be fine if we were playing KY high schools.

The thing with Skal is complicated. He simply has got to recover his game. Minutes on the floor is his only option. Cal full well understands this. Skal not starting in more than a couple of games means Cal has been forced onto a dark road for us.

You can blow smoke up your own ass and pretend that Willis somehow fills a gap left by Skal, but all you do is see smoke rings behind you.

Don't waste your time worrying about earning playing time. High School is over for these kids. Ask yourself what hangs a banner at the end of the year. Then you'll have a better understanding of Cals world.

Then you weren't watching

He didn't have a perfect game, but he showed he is serviceable off the bench. Plus, he got some rebounds, blocks, and assists in addition to some scoring. His defense was fine at some points (once again, not perfect), so saying he got scored on is silly, since all our players got scored on. And finally, he straight up was better than Skal today.

I thought with Cal it was about getting players to the league...if he even let's Skal think about leaving before 2-3 years he is doing a disservice to the kid...much too green and has very little idea about playing the game on this level much less the next

As long as he is playing with intensity and being productive at both ends of the court he will get playing time, so sayeth the coach:popcorn:

I don't know anybody actually stupid enough to believe that's Cal's only goal. I also don't know anyone stupid enough that they think any coach wouldn't happy to land a kid in the NBA. Generally anyone that brings that up has a Cal hater agenda or is a moron from an opposing school like UL.

We might have a fan or two stupid enough to think the future is already written for Skal for the next 2 - 3 years. There's no indication that Cal has given up on him.

As much as you want Skal to be elite he isn't...let it go

Cal and the players still believe he's special.

After the South Carolina loss in 2014 (late Feb/early March I think), I bet nobody thought that team was a title-contending team. Three losses the past 4 games, right? RIGHT before the postseason began. The ceiling was falling.

I do agree with your point about Willis... He's showing signs of breaking out this season, and I hope he keeps playing with energy and confidence and does good things on both ends of the floor. At the same time, I believe Skal will improve and be great by March.

A strong case can be made that Willis deserves more playing time. He's shooting 47% from the field which isn't bad considering over 1/2 of his shots are 3 pointers (where he's hitting 32%...2nd best on the team). He's 100% from the FT line. He has more steals than Marcus Lee despite playing 1/2 of his minutes. He also has more assists than AP or Lee...again, with only 1/2 the PT. He's not as good a rebounder as those guys but part of that is because we use him more on the perimeter.

Shhhhh......keep letting them think Skal will be #1 overall pick come June. He was the 2ND coming of Christ a month ago.

So Cal shouldn't give a kid who everyone predicts has the potential to be the #2 pick in the draft a little more lead way to come into his own? I think he needs to bench Skal, but how many times has Willis done more in less time than ANY starter during his career?

Skal in a slump has averaged 12 and 4 in 22 minutes.
!

No, he has not. In the 4 game slump, he is less than 4 & 2.
When he was at about 16 & 5, that was not a slump.
The slump is after the opponent learned how to defend.
Facts are facts.........(What have you done lately)

Which guard do you sit?
None, Matthews shares the 3 and the other 3 G's share the 1&2 based on what they are getting done game by game.
All is determined by what Skal does. Willis is better than the current Skal or Humphries. (He will continue geting pt at the 4)
My question has always been, How long is pt given based on potential rather than results?

Willis Stats: Min.11.8 PPG 5.6 RPG 2.2 APG .5 STEALS .7 BPG. .4 TPG .5 FG% 47 FT%100 3P%.32
Matthews : Min. 16.3 PPG 3.7 RPG 2.0 APG .9 STEALS .7 BPG .1 TPG 1.1 FG% 52 FT% 47
3P% .25

Willis should be in front of Matthews in the rotation . Yes Willis gets beat occasionally on defense but
so does Matthews and several others. I am not saying Willis can lead us to number nine but I would
be interested to see what would happen if he got 20 minutes a game.

Willis is much better than Matthews...Willis knows how to play the game and is more all around. Matthews is just young and raw. Willis just needs to quit rushing his jumper and knock them down and he will play more

this is the first time I seen Willis hit the floor and be aggressive and insert himself in the fight. he was scrapping down low and had a little attitude with his play.

I've always said at 6"10 with his wing span if he just got a little mean and aggressive he could find min. but it seemed like he wanted to be a spot of 3 point shooter. forget that he needs to be 6"10 bald nut who occasionally knocks down a 3.

In my opinion he started feeling sorry for himself and listening to those saying he should be playing. worst thing you could do. even if he was right, nothing good comes from a woe as me attitude and playing or feeling like the victim. you get pissed and go kick some as$$$. he showed more in his body language to me then he did in playing time. dead ball he was calling the guys together at the free throw line. before to me he seemed uncomfortable and kinda stood on the outside with his head down.

if Willis takes those mins and stops waiting for someone to give them to him he will blossom. what I mean by take is to insert himself and look at himself like he is supposed to be here , and this is my team to. just have always had that feeling Willis never felt a 100% like he fit in. maybe he has dropped that and is going to give Cal no choice but to play him. if he thInks things are just supposed to happen just because then he will be very disappointed. what I seen Sat was a young man taking matters into his own hands, and maybe that's the attitude he needs? just my opinion. but really rooting for the kid because we really could use that type of warrior attitude on this team this year. hope he keeps playing with that chip on his shoulder.

Having a poor shooter like Briscoe in against the zone, a stretch 4 really helps the spacing. Energy is his key.

I like his aggressiveness. He is not afraid to pull the trigger & he seems to finish well on the break too.

Yeah, I gotta say I love a lineup with Ulis, Murray, Briscoe, Willis and Lee, or Murray, Ulis, Willis, Poy and Lee. I love having 3 potential solid 3 point shooters out there together in Murray, Ulis and Willis.

I like the fact Willis can make the 3. but when in he needs to be a finisher. he also needs to be a shot blocker and disruptive down low. he is not going to push many bigs around, but he can be disruptive just by sticking his nose in the middle of any play.

honestly wish we could get away from Willis biggest asset being he can shoot the 3. the kid should have 3 or 4 dunks every game and throw in some 15 foot shots off breaks. but one thing I would love to see is Willis at the end of the game having 3 or 4 fouls. not fouls 20 feet from the basket but aggressive fouls going after the ball. first that would mean he was on the floor second that means he is battling. kid has so much more to offer then 3 point shooting when he plays aggressive.

LOL Willis might block a shot or 2 but he will never be a shot blocker. He is true SF who can play a little inside . Love his play though . Like Lee , he has always been a good player but just had better guys in front of him til know .

Willis definitely has a place in the rotation if he brings it but he's not going take minutes from Briscoe, Lee or Poy if they are healthy and not in foul trouble. Briscoe is so tough and a very good defender, Lee is playing great and Poy is starting to forget the injury and beast out.

Willis just needs to learn to play with energy and fire that'll give Coach Cal a huge notice.

He is 6'9" with 7' wingspan with respectable skill sets.

I feel like he plays at 50-60% all the time. I want to see him exhausted like MKG is when he goes to sit.

Once he does that, i see his role can be what Miller was here. Versatile guy that can slip in at 3 or 4, depending on who Coach Cal sends to bench.

To me he is similar to Poythress's freshman/sophomore season. Poythress now plays with energy that allows him to be more consistent. If he plays with energy and fight, Willis will definitely earn the minute that he desire.

I don't want to get involved in the Willis discussion generally. But for those saying bench Skal and start Willis......devil's advocate. Granted Skal is struggling right now, and if the idea is to start the 5 best players, well, right now that's not him. But surely no one would argue against the notion that Skal has far more potential, and unless he's a historic bust will be better than DW in the end. Isn't he still, even now, a projected top 5 pick?.... The kid clearly has confidence issues. I fear benching him may set him back even further, and push out his breakthrough. The goal is to be the best in March, not December.

That's one reason for not making the switch.....

Willis is the 8th man in Cals 7 man rotation. He played well Sat but Skal was awful and Polygress was in foul trouble and hurt.

Not a chance Cal benches Skal long term.

a disservice if some stupid NBA team picks in the top 5?

Just must have been an amazing, fabulous, stupendous and unparalleled 7 pts to evoke such an unbridled reaction by some of our 'special' fans.

I watched the entire game. I saw a decent game that was on par for a mid level KY player. I'm not 'special' though, so I may have missed the fantasy.
It was 7 points & 3 more rebounds than Skal got. 10 games is a good sample size. Skal has big time issues. Willis produced. Skal did not and has not for a while. As far as Willis getting beat defensively, watch Jamal Murray and tell me what you see.
