Williams played better today.

I think Pope may have challenged him after taking him out early. He played much more aggressively especially in the 2nd half.

Still don’t like that he gives up way too many rebounds but overall I thought he was better today.
Yes, he is playing better overall. He started out quite poorly and Pope took him out pretty early. But, he played much better the rest of the way after that. And, yes, the rebounding is the one big thing he still needs to get better at.

He did, I finally watched the replay. If he would just keep his arms up on shot contests and go for rebounds with 2 hands all the time it would solve so many issues

You want to know the weird thing about Williams.

looking at his player page on Kenpom I see this

Defensive Rebounding % = this year it's 30.5%. That's the 10th best for D-1 players lol.

Last year it was 26.2%. That was 28th overall.
Year before that it was 29.5%. That was 6th overall.
First year it was 28.6%. 18th overall.

Yep. Some people just have to have a whipping boy. This year it is Amari and Jaxson. Earlier it was Kerr.

Granted no one on the team is without faults, but some are harped on more than others.

Amari has things to improve on, but no more than anyone else.

He averages 8.5 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game. That averages out to almost 16 per 40 minutes. That almost Oscar numbers. Can he do better, of course, but “better” is all in his head. Guys a fifth year player and won multiple Defensive POY awards in his previous conference. He’s facing stiffer competition now obviously, but are we trying to say he needs to be getting 12-13 rebounds in his typical 20 minutes of action?

Exactly. If he could do that, at his size, he would already be in the NBA. Amari is fine.

And again..........with a team of players that have been in college for a longer period now, i just tend to believe these guys are what they are at this point.

I really think this team is a better rebounding team, they still have things to work on. But the overall feel for me is that they're mature and responsible, and really do care. They will be a better rebounding team moving forward. Florida just played a monster game, and we out monstered them. Huge win, momentum, and still very worthwhile lessons to learn moving forward!

Go Big Blue !

Williams played a good game. He gets damn little help rebounding.
Oh, he gets the help, it's just the other team. Don't remember the last time I saw a big at UK just STAND THERE while someone comes over the back to grab a rebound that he should have.

Williams is the third leading rebounder in the SEC, playing half the game. Granted, his fundamentals are not the best; but he grew up in freaking England where he likely received poor coaching and got by because he was bigger than his weak competition. He has bad habits that are not easy to break at this stage of his career in the middle of a season. On the other hand, he is quick and agile, has excellent court vision and his handle and passing skills are first rate. He was a tremendous portal addition for Pope's system as late as it was in the process.

Very good post. His PER 40 numbers are pretty darn good, just as you suggest. Yes, he has flaws, but I think many have unreasonable expectations for him this season. Hopefully, he is willing and able to step up against the tougher competition that he's not used to playing against. Drexel's schedule simply did not test him anything like the SEC will this year.
We definitely need him to ...

Yeah I'm beginning to think the 41% from today wasn't mostly on Amari lol.
I think our 5 out offense hurts us with rebounding. Our guys need to focus on getting to a spot instead of watching the ball fly through the air, but on defense, we still show bad habits. Our guys don't body up and fight for rebounds.
This is something that can be fixed and if they do fix it, this team goes up another level.

Amari was really good yesterday and his body language was totally different than what it has been. He seemed fired up and ready to compete.
He's a guy that, at 7' tall, has a lot of skills. If he can improve his offensive game and rim protection, he could be a real problem for every team we face.
