Will Mark be forced to bark at officials

Golden whining to the refs got call after call. Watching all the other SEC coaches they all get into the refs to try and influence calls their way.

Mark is so quiet it seems the refs aren’t worried about UK non calls.

Does he have to let them know he’s displeased? Are the other coaches getting over on him by their grousing? Most do spend a lot of time yelling.

Thought Fla got a big benefit today on offense in front of their bench with Golden and staff harping on the refs.
Pope clearly deploys the Brad Stevens approach.

Calm on the sidelines. Seems like his mind is analyzing every second, patiently waiting to make adjustments. Draws up the perfect play out of a timeout to get a good look. Subs a lot, likely based on analytics, and fans wonder WTF he is doing (my hand is raised!) ... if and when he screams, you know it is warranted! Always in control and has the respect of his players.

Cal yelled at the officials so much that they hated him. They looked for an excuse to T him up. Officials never changed or listened when Cal yelled because he always yells. You become numb to it and it doesn't mean anything--because Cal yells at every call.

Pope is the opposite. If/when he yells, the officials are more likely to listen to the guy who never yells. It means something when that guy yells.

We are the only team I regularly see who gets a bad whistle at home.
Maybe it is the hangover effect from the Cal days. We rarely get an even break anywhere. UF got the benefit of multiple touch fouls around the basket yesterday. Rupp had the same issue back in the day ,there were one or two officials who took great delight in sticking it to him.

I think Pope knows that this grinder SEC schedule will favor teams that don’t get too high or too low. He models it and the team reflects it. Try to stay calm and focused on the things you can control and don’t waste energy on those you can’t.

There might be specific moments where we get screwed, but overly emotional all the time will burn out and can’t be sustained IMO.

Btw I think Pope is a very emotional guy. Know there’s video of him getting T’d up at BYU. It’s just not his default setting and I’m a firm believer that he’ll get plenty of beneficial whistles over time because of his approach.

Right after the game yesterday, I went up the road with some friends to the NKU game. Doug Gottlieb was on the opponents bench. His ranting and raving and the players and officials was a horrendous look. He was like a petulant child upset at his parents for making him dinner. Distasteful behavior.

The kid from Clemson that played like he was a human wrecking ball had 0 fouls in 36 minutes against us. You'd probably have to dig deep into the NCAA record books to find another time a physical frontcourt player had 0 fouls while playing the majority of the game.

Pope's way more likable than Cal from a ref perspective but refs love injecting themselves into the game when it's a festive atmosphere. We're still going to get a shit whistle more often than not on the road.

If you dug deep and found such a stat it is an even bet UK would have been the opposing team

Golden, right in the refs ear, called that phantom foul on the three point shooter in front of their bench and no one will convince me otherwise.
Also, I was hoping that Popes attendance at the ref conference would have garnered him some good will and undo the Cal effect for the Cats. Guess not.

I disagree.
We actually got a fair whistle from Doug Shows last week.

That would NEVER happen if Cal was still here.

"This is about this community and these players growing and learning and the fact that we get to be here to bear witness is unbelievable. It's really special."

- Coach Mark Pope

That's a great quote from Coach Pope. I couldn't agree more. I'm very thankful for him and the team. I've been barking at the way the NCAA officiating has been for decades, so I'm going to stay calm. But it's needed to be changed for many years. Just go in, beat whatever whiteout, red out, orange unicycle riding circus PLUS the 3 zebras they assign.

Beat them all. Like always before. It amazes me Kentucky STILL has so many wins in this league and titles. Add all the titles and tournament titles of the rest of the SEC, do they still combined for as many as UK has ? I still don't think so.

Where's "The List" when I need it ?

Go Big Blue !

No, never from Shows. I assume you’re referring to the Brown game so I’ll reserve further judgment on Shows until he has us in a big game and does the same.
Well, that is the FIRST UK game Doug Shows has called that he wasn't the MVP..........for the other team.

Shows and Cal are mortal enemies.

The fact that he stays as calm as he does shocks me, I can't keep it together watching on tv I can't imagine how I would be on the sidelines.
He's staying calm so he can coach the game and make in-game adjustments. That's working pretty well.

I’m well aware. He was brutal during an earlier game but I can’t remember who we were playing.
I must have missed him in an earlier game. I thought this was the first UK game he had called since Cal left.

Edit: WOW! Shows called the Ohio State game. We must have played so bad he didn't feel the need to interject himself into being the MVP.

Ftr from 8:22 to 1:57 of the 2nd half yesterday UK was called for 7 fouls which all led to free throw attempts. In the same span, florida was called for 1.

And it figures my 1,000th post would be about officiating. 😂 Only took 20+ years

There's no rule in the rule book that fouls have to be even. Teams play different.

If we don't allow 2nd chance points off giving Florida offensive rebounds, we win by double digits. Florida was plus 9 on offensive rebounds...thats potentially giving someone another opportunity of atleast 18 points. They had 19 total offense rebounds. You have control over that as a team..
The foul they called on Butler on that 3 run point shot was atrocious. It came right after the Golden boy had got on the zebra. Butler didn’t touch the shooter. Poor officiating. I think Pope handles the officials just fine in his own way.

Id like to see a little more fire out of him

But.. what if being even reserved and not in their face (like Dan Hurley) is what will ultimately get the officials on his side after a while?

Would be nice if Rupp could get the type of treatment that Cameron or Allen Field house gets. This could have its benefits. Look at Jay Wright and what a class act he is. He was a huge ambassador for Villanova basketball and the game. I dont know anyone who didnt like Villanova during those years. And now you compare that to Hurley who everyone is already starting to hate.

Kill 'em with kindness. It could work.
I think Mark's approach, guided by experience in the game and in life, is that you want to focus on the things you can change, and accept graciously that not all things will go your way even on the best of days.

And I love that about Pope. The players need to be laser focused on what the plan of action is. The screaming constantly helps players build mental callouses but each raising of the voice has diminishing returns in effectiveness. Pope wants the players to play with a clear mind and if he ever needs to chew a player or a ref out, it will absolutely have an effect because he hasn’t banged the gong too often prior.

I was hoping the officials just hated Calipari. Turns out it’s Kentucky.
Mark Emmert hated Cal and UK, We stole Terrence Jones and Kanter from Washington when he was AD there. Both decommitted and went to UK. He then had Kanter declared ineligible. A recruit that was committed to his school.
He is gone but looks like there is still a UK bias in the NCAA.
I don’t think it matters if coach Pope is silent or goes bonkers. The officials have a plan to screw UK before the ball is tipped. Screaming isn’t gonna change that.
If you don’t believe the SEC and NCAA don’t have influence on the officials, watch the Tim Donaghy documentary. It was the NBA but he said the league put pressure on them to favor teams and have series go to 7 games.
I doubt college executives are any different.

Officials are human. Many (most?) of them take being screamed at personal.

Any official that doesn't want to be shown up by a screaming coach will be affected by one that does.

And the official only has one way to scream back at the offender. A whistle.

Cal ruined his “reputation” with the “gutter guy”and other officials.I would rather not be black balled by the referee union.Popes great I just wish they would start teching guys like Hardy. You know a guy who couldn’t beat up a pillow that talks like a gunny from ww2 to the officials.

I like Pope's approach. I tend to think, in the long run, it'll help us more than it'll hurt us. Especially once Pope has been around a while. Once he's been 'blessed' by the Official's good ole boy network, he may get rewarded. Or, after he's earned his street cred, when he does bark, it may be more effective.

For whatever it's worth, my buddy (who's not a Kentucky fan, but is generally warm about Kentucky) said he thought the officiating wasn't bad. In his non biased opinion, Kentucky got away with as many, as the ticky tacks they were called for. TIFWIW.
