Why'd Pope go 100% away from Williams?

I thought it was weird. He had 8reb 4ast and 6pts and I’m not sure I remember him playing in the second half. He gave up some baskets I thought he shouldn’t, and I wish he’d try to dunk everything close to the rim but didn’t think he was terrible or unplayable.
Was NOT protecting the rim on defense and was watching the ball come off while the Card players grabbed offensive rebounds.

If you're not going to do what Coach expects out of you, you will be sitting next to him.

Soft on D.

He got outplayed by garrison.

Simple as these two things.

Williams becomes more of a mystery to me with every passing game. He’s had his stretches where he’s productive, but it just doesn’t seem like his motor is running all the time. What’s particularly baffling to me is all the times that he seems to be in good position to alter a shot around the rim only to stand flat footed with his hands down. I was expecting him to have a lot more impact in that particular area given his size and the defensive accolades he had compiled before transferring.

Williams just doesn’t give effort far too often. Doesn’t jump, rebounds with 1 arm while trying to push off with the other, plays with his arms down most of the time and no touch.
Yeah I think that's all fair. There are some plays where he frustrates me where he just gives up easy buckets at the rim. It looks like he could go up and jump and attack the ball but he just gives up an easy basket. Those plays from him do drive me crazy, But, then he'll have a stretch where he looks really good. Just need to see more consistency.

I'll hangup and listen.
If you watched the game, I am confused by your question. Not only is Williams bad on defense but for some reason he thinks he is capable of backing his defender under the basket for an easy basket. I am not sure why because most often results in a turnover or a brick shot attempt.

Yes he does. He was very good in the overtime at Gonzaga. That’s why he needs to sit until he gives that consistent level effort because he is capable of doing so.

He is lazy on defense. He will repeatedly watch guards throw up jump hook shots in the lane without attempting to block it. To compound the problem, he will often times fail to get the rebound on misses even when the opposing team has no real low post presence.

Also, should just add in Garrison's favor, that play he made down the stretch where he hustled like crazy and saved the ball out of bounds off of Hepburn was huge!

Definitely not, but his effort needs to be greater and he needs to play better defense. He was getting abused by small players.

Basically this. He wasn’t even jumping contesting shots. You can tell he’s gotten by being big most of his college time. Not anymore.
This is going to be a big issue in the SEC, so Pope basically is trying to get at least one of them to step up. I'd be fine with Garrison if he wasn't such a black hole on offense. He's GOT to either make a quick and decisive move and a good shot or pass it. Right now it's zero passes and half the time it's a forced shot. He's playing for his NBA stock IMO.

Yeah if he works on passing out of the post not only will we hit more 3’s he will be less pressured so they can’t collapse on him. Right now it’s easy to defend.

I love Pope but I don't understand why we didn't go small with Carr at center some today, we didn't rebound well with the bigs out there anyway so I'm surprised he didn't at least try it.
