Why was Rex Chapman there?

Including intentional distractions before a title game.
I showed my husband the video of the press conference, last night after we got home from it. When Chapman appeared on the video, I told him exactly what you said, that he's a pos that's done nothing but bad-mouth UK from his playing days.

It’s unfortunate bc king Rex was one of my sports heros from my childhood years. Have his rookie Hornets card and would keep it, along with Delks, in my gym bag all through little league and Jr High as motivation.

Dude has been through some stuff none of us will ever understand. He deserves a chance to redeem himself just like any of us. You don’t like his position then debate it, hate it , whatever, but to write off someone for their political views is why everything is on fire right now.
I agree. I know we like to put players on pedestals around here, but can we really expect perfection from them? I sure as hell have made plenty of mistakes but thankfully, they weren't broadcast nationally. We all do stupid stuff. Rex is a legend in UKBB and yes, he's said and done some things I'm sure he regrets and wish he could take back. We should give him time and get behind him and hope he turns a corner but to publicly trash the guy on a UK board isn't wise. Do you really think your collective rants are helpful for him? IDK, I just think we all need to be better than that. You can be upset for sure but just keep it between you and your dog. JMO.

He's a broadcaster for UK games. It would be strange if he wasn't there.
No he's not. He used to be part of a pregame show but he was removed due to some of his twitter posts. He is actually living back in Phoenix and working for the Suns organization.

Having said all that, I have no issues with him being here yesterday and the ovation he got shows that most of the comments in this thread are in the minority. Everyone is saying he trashes UK. It is not trashing to talk about your experiences and from everything I have seen, read, and heard from people around at that time, while the book may have embellished them some, the experiences he lists in the book are factual.

Rex has a platform the rest of us don't have. Fans on a message board trashing the coach or team is nothing compared to what he does when he whines to thousands of people. So that argument is bull sh*t. Like many others before and after him, he was treated like a god during his time at UK.

Also, my first thought these days when I see him on the screen is not "Hey, there's Rex". Its "Hey, who is that lesbian?"

Thanks for the info; obviously I don't keep close tabs on him.

I'm not a big Rex fan of him as a person but I did enjoy seeing him happy along with the rest of the former players for this new era of Kentucky Basketball. His presence there yesterday didn't bother me.

So? He has trashed this program at every turn.

The program that gave him a chance to get his life back on track after his many troubles.

Wished he had attended Louisville. His own words.

And then has the gall to show up to celebrate Mark Pope and this PROGRAM.

He has done more to criticize this program and criticize the fan base more than all other former players combined. Quite the feat.
Was. Chapman was a UK legend. He’s a clown now. Sort of along the lines of Tom Payne, but by way of different paths.

He does? What about the time he said he had inside knowledge that Cal was taking the UCLA job a few mins before tip-off of the title game? Miss me with that kind of supporter.

He thought he had a scoop. He was also an addict.

I was tight too when he did it.

But give him some grace. He’s apologized.

but wishes he never went to UK... hmmmmmmm
I just watched an interview with him about the prospects of Reed Sheppard returning. He sounded very
reasonable and seemed to really like the family. He admitted that Sheppard's situation was different from his own because he grew up a UL fan while Reed grew up a UK fan.
Rex was also wearing UK glasses and a UK t-shirt. I don't think he hates UK; he's just a guy who is a mix of good and bad like everybody I've ever known except a handful that didn't seem to have any good in them.

I seriously wonder why he showed up. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago he said how much he hated his time at UK. Stated that he wished he had gone to Louisville. How UK fans were redneck racists because of who he dated at UK.

Then I see him hamming it up next to Jeff S when Pope stated he and the coaches would be "shepherds".

I don't get it.
I was really surprised, lol .

I think people are upset that Rex brought to light how it was like to play for UK in the past and how racist some people around the program and throughout the state are. Folks like to keep honest issues hidden when they are exposed and it doesn't make something they think should be clean look in a negative light. By reading some comments on here, those types still exist.

A pathological attention whore like Rex wouldn’t skip such a big attention event.

I knew he’d not only be there, but also be trying to put himself in spots where he’d get as much camera time as possible.
The fact that he was invited is the surprise.

His book flopped and he's going to do another with a different twist? Or maybe he heard there were some beautiful African American women who were going to attend so he could try and get laid? Was high and thought he was in Louisville?

He is about REX, always was...always will be. He could care less about UK, if UL got him more attention

OK Rex.....Thanks for enlightening us. Oh by the way, I have not seen one post here that is racist, but nice try.

I would say being a New York Times best seller is the definition of not flopping.

As somebody a little older than Rex and a lifelong Kentucky native I can assure everybody that Rex did catch some flak from dating black girls. But the thing is, and I'm sure Rex has never thought about it, it would have happened everywhere. There are still members of every race who get upset about members of their race going dating those of another race and it used to be worse than it is now.

Thank you. Once went to a Mexican restaurant with a black girl in Columbia, SC. The kind where most of the customers are Mexican. We got the stare down, big time. This was 2005 or so. Yes, it's a s****y feeling. It really is. But I don't hold a grudge against Columbia or Mexican people or even that restaurant.

Why would Mexicans care if a white gringo was dating a black lady? I mean, I'll take your word for it, but seems a little strange. Don't understand why they would care.
