Why is Cal not standing up for UK? It's clear the Sharpes lied to UK

Obviously ^

What does attacking a 18yr old and his family do? 1) it makes some fans "feel better", AND 2) it antagonizes a "handler" to not steer future recruits to us, AND 3) it could look bad for us to many future potential recruits.

You can say Cal should have not let us get in this position to start with, but once in it, we were stuck between a rock and a hard place.
it amazes me in a very sad way that some can not understand something so simple and basic
you do not burn the house down because you see a mouse

I know many here think Cal was complicit in all this, or even did it on purpose.. but I don't buy that. I think Cal got duped, and is privately livid by this action. It very likely stripped him of a #1 seed and an Elite8, at least.. it might have even cost him a Final 4 or more.. and a deep run this year, as opposed to the early flameout, probably just cost him his career at UK making $10,000,000. He's not going to get that contract again.. but he might have, if we had Sharpe and brought home some hardware.

Sharpe screwed Cal's legacy, his earnings, and image with not only UK fans, but college basketball as a whole. He can't be happy about this.
That’s the only reasoning that lets me not be completely pissed at Cal over this.

If he cost himself money, he’s gone off the deep end.

Might as well act happy for the young man and try to salvage some positive press for future recruiting as partial payback.

Try to take credit for the work our coaching staff did to get a player drafted top 10 who never suited up in a game. Try to make the best of it and move on. Hope Shaedon helps us recruit in the future.

What’s done is done. Put it in the rear view. Get what we can from the circumstances. Canada is producing great players let’s not cut that rope.

Well hopefully he is done with this handler .

This handler of Sharpe is the same guy that worked with Barret and SGA among other players. Is it worth burning the bridge down to lose out on other Canadian players later. I don’t think so. I don’t like the way this went down. Hopefully we can learn from this in the future. Just don’t see where UK can win in this instance.

Hasn’t Cal cut ties with other AAU/HS programs before because of bad experiences . One thing it’s hard to do is keep a relationship when all trust is lost. I don’t know how Cal could trust dude after this unless Cal was in it with them from the start which is definitely possible .

In Cal's mind he might consider Sharpe going top 5 without playing to be a more impressive coaching accomplishment than the 2012 title.
Yes, yes that is definitely it? I can see it now; Cal and Ellen are sitting home, and the kids come to visit. They are reminiscing, Dad remember that time you won the NCAA title? Cal: Vaguely, but I remember when the Trailblazers took Sharpe with the 4th pick. Now he is retired and broke as hell, his handlers robbed him. Back to generational poverty

One bad with Sharpe one good with SGA. Don’t know if I would burn that bridge. Man to man I would have to tell him we can’t do anymore Sharpe situations don’t have to embarrass anyone. Tubby didn’t like dealing with AAU programs and it sunk him.

You ever catch your dog going through the garbage, or chewing up your shoe, something, and he hangs his head, and gives you those big eyes because he knows what he was doing was wrong? Even animals get it.

I don't see that from Sharpe, or his "crew" or Cal, or any of the merry bandits involved in this fiasco. That means either that they think they have done nothing wrong, or they are sociopaths. Either way, I'm glad at least 1 team cancer is gone.

So you suggest we just talk about guy like a dog and lose out on any future recruits under this guy. I would tell the guy no more Sharpe antics. Time to move on to another subject. We are recruiting other players. I am ready to turn page and move on to next years teams. Nothing we can do to change the situation.

So let me get this straight: if you parse Cals words you have an agenda. But if you parse Cal’s eyes, you’re free to commence a complete psychological profile.

Maybe next time try looking more at the coaches feet instead of their eyes. That way you’ll know where they’re able to stand at during a ball game.

Other than that I do think the hand wringing is a bit much considering it’s all talk and not action. Do we really need a response... whatever the quote would be, I’ll guarantee anyone it’d just be a bunch of words

Tweet speaks for itself. If you try to parse those words you have an agenda. Cal is being crystal clear here.

On Feb 8, 2022, just TWENTY FOUR HOURS LATER, Cal said this:

“It is what it is. I know everybody will say, ‘Well, he isn’t coming,’ Yeah, well anybody can say anything. This kid comes back, he’s the No. 1 draft pick. In my mind, he’s the No. 1 draft pick. How can I say I know what the No. 1 draft pick looks like? BECAUSE I’VE HAD FOUR!!! That’s why I can say what it looks like. He can be the No. 1 draft pick." The video is below - watch Cal when he says "I'VE HAD FOUR!!!" His eyes bug out and he's yelling at the reporter. The level of ego behind that statement is staggering.

He also said he talked to Sharpe's family and said "Has anything changed? Because we need to make sure this doesn't become a story, because it doesn't need to be....Why don't you sleep on it and tell me if anything's changed." Referring to whether or not Sharpe was going to come back in 2023 or go to the NBA. KEEP IT QUIET! But worst case, he puts it on the family. Cal has plausible deniability here but it's clear he was having doubts.

Here's the video (Skip to the 27 minute mark):

Sometime in the next 6 weeks, the whole time WE are saying Sharpe has no intention of playing here, Cal decides to start the walkback.

The walkback started on March 21:

“I think he’s gotta explore but he’s gotta make a decision on, ‘Alright, do I want this right now? Am I ready for this right now? Is it where I thought it was?’ Because as you go through the process, the information comes back from the NBA, not an agent or anybody else around you, it comes from the NBA…He’s another one. I hope I get a chance to coach him in real games because I enjoy him in practice and I enjoy him as a young person. He’s one of those guys but he’s a super talent though.”

Here you can see he's defending Sharpe while implying that he knows Sharpe is seriously considering leaving.

Now it's two months later and Sharpe is clearly gone and Cal is being silent. Why isn't he denouncing Sharpe for lying to UK?

If he hugs it out on draft night, it will look very suspicious.

I think you're right. He's in a tough spot because no matter what our resident clown on rupps rafters believes, you can't come out and put any kid down this day and time. He's too smart for that
I really believe he thought Sharpe was the player to put UK back in the driver's seat

The main comment Cal made: "I'm not playing him just to win a game" will rise higher than anything else he achieves here going forward.
You dress him out, you mix him in with the team, and then you ignore him despite injuries.

Yeah, our coach is in it to win it.....

Our national standing is being flushed daily......Texas Tech gets a 5 star while we discuss why we have such a short bench.

False choice fallacy. I never said "talk about guy like a dog." And if we lose out on more NONE and done recruits who cares. Stop trying to change the subject. This matter isn't closed yet. The ripples from this scandal will be going for a while. Buckle up.

I don’t think Cal needs to comment on an 18yr old kid and his family. It’s beneath him and would look petty. With that said, Cal still sucks ass and I don’t like him. :)

Can't believe there are people on this board that think Cal was completely fooled… yup, he had no idea he was being duped. He literally thought a lottery pick… that was eligible for the draft… ..was going to bypass said draft… .and come play college ball.

RIIIIIGHT

You need to have your head examined if you think Cal is that naive.

He lied to us the whole time. Sure, he wanted SS to play here, but I WANT to win 100 million bucks today. I have the same shot at that 100 mill as Cal had at Sharpe playing in a UK jersey.

He allowed a freaking advisor to dictate what a UK scholarship player… with an NIL deal, did. GTFOH with that. What a joke.

Handlers should have no say once a player signs those scholarship papers and is on campus. Not at UK.
What's worse, is our best NIL sponser gave him the red carpet treatment. They didn't do that for his looks, they did it because they thought he was going to play ball at UK. They were duped too and Cal let it happen.
Once Cal realized he wasn't going to play, he should have sent him and his advisor packing. He didn't have to get ugly with that, he could send them someplace that will cater to their circus. Just don't allow them to shit on this program.

He wasn't eligible for the draft. That's the part that changes it all

Yes, it's worth burning that bridge.

Why? Because nothing Washington says can be seen as true in the future. Nothing.

He publicly embarrassed our program and Kentucky. You don't come back from that with smiles and cordiality.

Still amazing to me we have fans that believe, actually believe, that John Calipari, The Godfather of the NBA player, who’s sent countless players to the pros, who coached in the NBA, and has tons of connections behind the scenes, was DUPED and didn’t know the NBA wouldn’t care about HIGH SCHOOL GRADES.

I’m telling y’all, I’m going to end up starting a rafters used car lot. I just think it would make a killing here. Every car is a one owner, driven by my mother in law, to church only - each Sunday.

Calipari has to think to himself sometimes “I knew they’d be harder to deal with than Memphis fans but I had no idea they’d be this easy”. It’s unreal.

It’s so cray to believe that I mean I just can’t rn…

Cals caddie storms into his office -

CAL, we’ve got a problem. Apparently Sharpe might be eligible for the draft.

Calipari turns in his chair - “WHAT? That’s not possible! He doesn’t have the grades for that!

You’ve got to be a dumb blind moron to actually believe this is possible. And I’m saying that as nicely as I can. Calipari knows everything that goes on, especially something of this nature with the top player in the class. Get y’all’s heads out of your ass and stop looking stupid in order to simply to find reasons to think Calipari is the guy you thought he was. He isn’t. He never has been.

I think the damage control for something like this is easy for us to say "well, why don't they just...", but in practice it's not so easy. We still don't know, and never will know, how privy Cal was to this. He may have known this from the start, it may have been more of a blindside move.

In the recruiting game, it's hard to to take a strong stance against a player, as that can hurt future recruiting, AND be used by other coaches to recruit against you.

When you think about it, coming out and blasting the Sharpe family doesn't accompolish much, aside from making the fans feel better. Which, I completely get. But for Cal and the program, you almost have to just take this, and try to never let a situation like this ever happen again.
I get it. But at the same time, Barney needs to nip this in the bud. Say something to the effect of "student athletes". Scholastic accomplishment, academic commitment, university mission statement. HOWEVER, this must not be allowed to occur again. At the very least it slaps Cal's hand and reminds him who the boss is. Believe me, Cal could use a dose or gallon or bat of humility.

Yeah, maybe that handler could steer some more players to us that will never play
Handlers have destroyed college basketball. Why would an 18 year old need a "handler" to make a decision to play basketball at a university? What happened to the days when a basketball coach went into the living room of a recruit and sat down with mother and father and explained why their university would be a great fit for their son?

Oh I know, the American family is dead. Gone, destroyed and disrespected. So now a kid clings to a leach who will drain his blood for a dollar bill. And they call this progressive.

What a sad commentary on college basketball today. I venture to say 75% of college basketball and football coaches in the Hall of Fame would not or could not coach today's athlete. Calipari is not coaching players on our team, he is managing them to keep them happy.

When coaches feel they have to kiss a players ass to recruit them or coach them it is time to find something else to do in life.

Imagine if a sales manager told their boss…

“I’m not going to send out one of our best sales people, just so the company can close on a big sale!”

Calipari can GF himself on that comment alone!
Fire the asshole, and make him sue you for the buyout!

Merchandise and ticket sales are going to tank until that leach is ousted.

Case in point of why "Players First" is pure BS for the program. CCC: "i'll never let player(s) hold us hostage again"
um, it's a recruiting tactic. Low baller Country or whatever his name is wants Cal to throw his recruiting mantra down the toilet, that would be wise
