On Feb 7, 2022, Cal tweeted this:

Tweet speaks for itself. If you try to parse those words you have an agenda. Cal is being crystal clear here.

On Feb 8, 2022, just TWENTY FOUR HOURS LATER, Cal said this:

“It is what it is. I know everybody will say, ‘Well, he isn’t coming,’ Yeah, well anybody can say anything. This kid comes back, he’s the No. 1 draft pick. In my mind, he’s the No. 1 draft pick. How can I say I know what the No. 1 draft pick looks like? BECAUSE I’VE HAD FOUR!!! That’s why I can say what it looks like. He can be the No. 1 draft pick." The video is below - watch Cal when he says "I'VE HAD FOUR!!!" His eyes bug out and he's yelling at the reporter. The level of ego behind that statement is staggering.

He also said he talked to Sharpe's family and said "Has anything changed? Because we need to make sure this doesn't become a story, because it doesn't need to be....Why don't you sleep on it and tell me if anything's changed." Referring to whether or not Sharpe was going to come back in 2023 or go to the NBA. KEEP IT QUIET! But worst case, he puts it on the family. Cal has plausible deniability here but it's clear he was having doubts.

Here's the video (Skip to the 27 minute mark):

Sometime in the next 6 weeks, the whole time WE are saying Sharpe has no intention of playing here, Cal decides to start the walkback.

The walkback started on March 21:

“I think he’s gotta explore but he’s gotta make a decision on, ‘Alright, do I want this right now? Am I ready for this right now? Is it where I thought it was?’ Because as you go through the process, the information comes back from the NBA, not an agent or anybody else around you, it comes from the NBA…He’s another one. I hope I get a chance to coach him in real games because I enjoy him in practice and I enjoy him as a young person. He’s one of those guys but he’s a super talent though.”

Here you can see he's defending Sharpe while implying that he knows Sharpe is seriously considering leaving.

Now it's two months later and Sharpe is clearly gone and Cal is being silent. Why isn't he denouncing Sharpe for lying to UK?

If he hugs it out on draft night, it will look very suspicious.

I’m going to cut him some slack on this (albeit very little) and say he may wait until the draft is over before commenting, if he ever does.

He doesn’t want to look like he’s attacking an 18 year old kid.

It could easily turn into a PR nightmare too.

The University should absoltueky say something though for sure.

I would ordinarily agree with you, but that logic is specious given the enormity of the Sharpe family's actions.

Cal needs to choose whose side he's on. Can't ride the fence on this one. If he is all smiles on draft night he very likely lied as well.

Obviously ^

What does attacking a 18yr old and his family do? 1) it makes some fans "feel better", AND 2) it antagonizes a "handler" to not steer future recruits to us, AND 3) it could look bad for us to many future potential recruits.

You can say Cal should have not let us get in this position to start with, but once in it, we were stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I’d bet my life he lied. Cal knew he wasn’t going to play the spring semester as well as the kid was never going to be here next year. I firmly believe the sharpe being eligible was not supposed to come out until the season was over making it look as if if was just bad luck for us and good fortune for sharpe that they found a way to get him eligible. Once it was made known he was eligible is when all the sharpe must play now noise started and cal did all his crazy spin (not ready, doesn’t know plays, intensity not there yet) garbage. Only thing that caught cal off guard was the eligibility leak which put him into a tailspin trying to cover his own ass.

Cal will NEVER say anything derogatory about this entire Sharpe situation. He has already indicated that by LECTURING our fans about saying anything about it to Sharpe or his entourage on social media. Cal wants to keep the line open for future recruits even though he now has the reputation as being EASILY DUPED.

I highly doubt that Cal's silence about this kid and his handlers SCAM will earn him any respect from future recruits. But as @STL_Cat stated above, Cal has most definitely allowed the inmates to run the asylum with his "Players First" mantra, the UK program be _amned!!

Why does he have to "attack" him? He could at least show some loyalty to UK and put out a statement distancing himself.

Yeah, maybe that handler could steer some more players to us that will never play

Stand for nothing, fall for anything.

As the head coach Cal controls the narrative. Sharpe shouldn't have worn the uniform if he wasn't going to play. In the long run I think recruits would respect Cal if he would've drawn a line in the sand with Sharpe's entourage.

Cal has no loyalty to UK, he lost that somewhere(if he ever had it) Have you heard him say anything in the last few years that leads you to believe he has any loyalty to UK, the program or the fans?

Had a doctor appointment yesterday, the Doctor and nurse are UK fans. Both said they want Cal gone. Before you Cal defenders tell me go get a life, later in the day I played 27 holes of golf and enjoyed myself very much

Dude you suck. I had to take the day off and get new tires and an oil change. I wish I had played 27 holes.

Adulting is fun.

“I have a day off tomorrow”

“Oh. For what?”

“A doctors appointment”.
Listening to the local radio show and they were talking about things people do to take a day off, and one guy apparently schedules a call-out day from work with a bunch of his buddies once every quarter or whatever. They just go hang out at one of their houses all day and go home at the normal quitting time. They don't tell their wives. LOL

I hate that too. Because I’d you call out, being seen in public sucks. If I call out I don’t want to sit inside all day.

Every job should have one “whatever day” per quarter. You can schedule or call out no questions asked.

Would do wonders for productivity. Sometimes you just need a “eff it day”.

That's why I'm self employed :D I don't have to ask.

"I like Ole Doc, he makes me laugh..." Not in this situation as I agree and it is no laughing matter but....(to stay on queue...)

I think the damage control for something like this is easy for us to say "well, why don't they just...", but in practice it's not so easy. We still don't know, and never will know, how privy Cal was to this. He may have known this from the start, it may have been more of a blindside move.

In the recruiting game, it's hard to to take a strong stance against a player, as that can hurt future recruiting, AND be used by other coaches to recruit against you.

When you think about it, coming out and blasting the Sharpe family doesn't accompolish much, aside from making the fans feel better. Which, I completely get. But for Cal and the program, you almost have to just take this, and try to never let a situation like this ever happen again.

Yeah God forbid we should fail to recruit another none and done player. We need all those guys holding down one end of the bench.

I know many here think Cal was complicit in all this, or even did it on purpose.. but I don't buy that. I think Cal got duped, and is privately livid by this action. It very likely stripped him of a #1 seed and an Elite8, at least.. it might have even cost him a Final 4 or more.. and a deep run this year, as opposed to the early flameout, probably just cost him his career at UK making $10,000,000. He's not going to get that contract again.. but he might have, if we had Sharpe and brought home some hardware.

Sharpe screwed Cal's legacy, his earnings, and image with not only UK fans, but college basketball as a whole. He can't be happy about this.

The point I was trying to make is that handwringing about losing potential recruits by doing the right thing about Sharpe is specious. The kid didn't even PLAY.

For me it is easy peasy to understand, players are always right in a player's first system.
