Why does UK any have Cal. as a coach?

Many on RR and HOB are convinced, that Calipari's talent is recruiting and he is less than average as a head coach; and if you disagree...well, hell, you are just a sunshine pumper.
So, for all you. Who could UK hire, that would bring in same amount of talent and make deeper runs in the NCAAT?

Dum post, there no reason to start something like this.

Did you even read my post? Where did I fault him for wanting to go 40-0.

I'm just having an issue understanding how cal wanting a team that can go 40-0 has anything to do with this team losing some early games?

Only thing I will add is that he prepares guys for the nba. That can be a negative for us who live for titles, but can also be a positive that he will always bring in the best players because they want to play in the league and he has their best interest. I say that because for example this year if Skal was somewhere else a coach would take advantage of his touch and let him play 10-15 feet away and shoot pick and pops, but Cal thinks he needs to build up his post game. Same way with AD (which turned out fine) his strength was guard in a bigs body, but he wasn't allowed to stretch the floor until the end of the year and didn't get to really stretch it until the nba. Towns was supposed to be a great shooter, but we put him on the block to improve his weaknesses and worked out fine for him. Randle could have probably started at the wing more and drove, but Cal played him low. So Cal may not be the best coach for pursuing titles because I really do believe he is a players first coach, and if the players adjust to the process sooner than later (AD for instance) then you could get a title. Last year same thing, Towns adjusted by the end of the year and it was a best of 7 series then we do win the title.

I don't like to be labeled, but I used to know a girl named Sunshine....

I don't get all the hostility. Most people (on the board) when asked, predicted around 5-8 losses this year. Seems as if we're on track for that. So we predict them to lose games then we're upset/ready to throw in the towel/faaar Cal because we lost...? It don't make no sense people.

Anyways....I'd rather lose to OSU and beat UL than vice-versa.

I did too, and man was she hot! Livingston County girl as a matter of fact!

Ridiculous post deserves ridiculous answer.
So I'll go with Pop, with Riles and Phil as assistants.
good lord...some of you. read the post. it is for all the "Cal sucks as coach" posters, to name a replacement that would have the same or better success.

as you see, they can't.

I would jump in this conversation, but I'm still trying to figure out what the thread title says.

About whether Cal is or wants to be a good Xs and Os coach, when you go after the players he does and runs the system he does, it's more about getting the most out of his players' talents, motivating them, etc. He is not running multiple screens, complicated sets, and a handful of different defenses. Whether he can do that or not I don't know. He wasn't getting this level of talent at UMass and Memphis (although the 2008 team was very talented), so I guess he can. I didn't follow them enough to know though.

I think cal runs a simple system because he is playing Mainly younger players not because he cannot get his head around it.

Edit for clarification: With the understanding that OP isn't making a case against Cal:

I and many other on here have completely destroyed this argument that "Cal can't coach" so many damn times, it's not even worth rehashing. You guys get slain in those other threads, disappear, wait for your chance (after a loss, which is rare under Cal), and then gather in enough numbers to just override threads with idiocy.

No, you're not an idiot for ever criticizing Cal's coaching at all. We've all done that.

But if you honestly think he doesn't know basketball, that he's just this charismatic dummy who can't grasp the finer concepts of a game, then you need to be put back into your padded cell before you short circuit your computer with drool.

We've already gone through the comparisons - the other HOFers and their star averages per rosters, and demonstrated how Cal's performance still vastly outstrips everyone except K and Rick over the past 6 years, even after adjusting for talent (only you knuckle-draggers who don't understand how to account for the output of the system miss this point, eg. average talent per roster versus sheer number of 5 stars acquired over the years).

So even if there are 10 coaches in the country who could do what Cal has done with this level of talent (and it seems unlikely, considering K has just as many 5 stars per roster and their results have been very close), why the hell would you do anything but thank your lucky stars for a top 2 recruiter and top 10 coach?

There are two categories of eeyores here -

1. The panicky trolls, which includes both extreme negative nancies and louisville fans in disguise, whose only posts during the '12 and '15 seasons were immediately after losses. We've been seeing those all season. All of you, go home to your own boards.

2. The more recent group that we're seeing in the negative category are the goldfish-memory-having emotional 5 year olds.

Before the season, many of them lambasted us rational fans for predicting 4-7 losses on the season, asking us where in the world we could find so many losses on the schedule.
Those of us who are level-headed know that sometimes you have a bad day, and good-but-not-legendary teams can lose to mediocre squads when they have bad days.

Somehow, every single preseason, they forget this fact, and they say "there's no reason we can't have just 2 losses this season again". Yes, there is, you simpletons. It's called the normal ebb and flow of a season.

Life is all about expectations. Cal has spoiled some of you so badly that every single loss questions your faith in goodness and hope in the universe. There have been precious few 2-or-fewer loss seasons in CBB history, and Cal produced what? Half of them?

If you paid even the slightest bit of attention to the basketball landscape, you'd have known what to expect this season - instead, you guys can't differentiate between a strong roster and a legendary one, so when suddenly you see a team performing like a regular "good" squad (like this year - win majority of games, all Ws by double digits, but dropping the occasional head-scratcher), you start to panic, and the trolls who only post after losses to disparage Cal are lying in wait to prey on your delicate emotional state.

What a bunch of ingrates. Just wait til the next guy comes along. If it's Sean Miller, then he'll do the Cal thing and start this cycle all over again.

On the other hand, if it's a Jay Wright type, then the trolls will be all excited even when we're going to 2 Final Fours a decade because they personally dislike Cal more than they care about UK's success... but the emotional five year olds are going to come to a stark realization about what they were really asking for, and they'll wish they hadn't let the trolls take them for a ride - they'd have appreciated the moments Cal gave them a heck of a lot more.

For those that say that the only way Cal ever wins is when he has a roster full of McDonalds All-Americans, I've got a question for you. How many McDonalds AA's did his 96 UMASS Final 4 team have? And besides Derrick Rose how many McDonalds AA's did his 2008 Memphis team (that was a missed free throw way from winning a NCAA championship) have?

johnnie jones? rick barnes? mark few? jay wright? bill self? coach k? what if izzo had the same players that cal has?
Why doesn't he have the same...he has the same opportunity to recruit them. Oh wait, he does get some of them...like Gary Harris. No what you don't get is someone like Izzo will get a one and done and not be able to develop him in a year...or turn them into a multiple year player.

If Cal can't coach...explain umass. They were a nobody and he had them winning 30 games a year. Oh he had Camby....yeah, lots of teams have one good player. Came you name the only coach who's taken to midmajors to a final four....wonder who?

I'm convinced our fans are morons...they do this same bs every year, rinse and repeat. It's like they are in a coma all year until the tournament and that's how they remember everything.

Also, Cal is one of the best defensive coach's in the country and it's not even close. Yet, ppl wonder why Willis doesn't play more because he hit one 3, but they don't even understand that he was the direct result of several opponents baskets because his defensive rotation and lack of communication was atrocious.

Track record speaks for itself. He should have one more title but you can say that about nearly every title winning coach out there. The guy has faults but he wants his kids to succeed in the professional level which is what he should want. UK prospers from that.

There are other ways to do it but the guy has gotten it done here. The other side of the coin is, He isn't above criticism either and just bc someone points that out doesn't mean they want him fired

Here's a simple comparison to Pitino.

Didn't uofl have montrezl Harrell a preseason all american player and of the year candidate?

Interesting, because UK had WCS who chased butterflies for 2 years, wasn't even sure if he liked basketball.

One ended the year as the first player in history to be named an all american who didn't average double figures and was the 6th pick in the draft...the other finished I believe on no all american teams and a 2nd round pick.

Didn't uofl have shaquan aaron a higher rated recruit than Devin booker? Interesting, one couldn't get off the bench and the other contributed major minutes and became a lottery pick. Booker would still be in school if he went to uofl.

Sounds like someone gets more out of talent, develops it faster and puts it in the right position.

That's the difference, Cal gets players and develops the system around what he has, unlike others who have a pre determined system that players are inserted in. If your strengths don't fit in their current system then plan on being there awhile trying to figure it out, whereas here you play to your strengths while working on other things. Afterall Pitino is the only coach in history to have the number one recruit in the country twice and not get them drafted in the NBA because he can't develop it (samardo samuels & Delray Brooks)

The problem is people really don't understand the game as it is now . Most years we have the best players , that's true . But they need time to adapt to college and gain experience , by years end we are usually one of the best teams . This process happens almost every year and fans can't wrap their mind around it for some reason . They think an elite players comes to college and doesn't need to learn the system , acclimate to new surroundings at school , get used to bigger and faster players etc....

The only years there will not be many growing pains is when you have quality returning players like Jones , Lamb or last years crop . No , they think freshman are plug and play right out of the box . Very few coaches could take this many new guys and make a final four , Cal is doing it regularly . He did it at Umass and Memphis too , that's impressive . Cal is a very good coach , he's just never better than hindsight .

Great effin post brother! I just can't wrap my head around how some fans just expect the freshman to be world beaters as soon as they get to campus. Year and year we see the freshman struggle at the beginning of the year and those same fans cry and bitch that Cal is a bad coach, our players are overrated, and God knows what other complaints. Its ridiculous. There was a thread here, either yesterday or day before, where an OP questioned Cal's development skills and said he wasn't good at getting the most out of his players. This was after 10 games. I know we have some idiots in our fanbase but saying that just blew me away. Its like they completely forget about the past and even the current circumstances and jump off that bridge. Some are so darn spoiled that they think the sky is falling when we lose 1 game. Its either perfection or we suck and it's a shame that we have fans like that and they're usually the loudest fans of all. Like they have to prove how big of an idiot they are to the world. Thank god we have such an amazing recruiter so that it doesn't effect future players. Its just beyond ridiculous.

Why are coaching for March and winning games you should win in December mutually exclusive?

Cal is on the record saying he wants to go 40-0. That includes winning games early in the season when you have the better group of players.

Yes, he did say that but he is not going to try and go 40-0 with every team he has. Big difference there.

He's a good recruiter but not all that great of a coach. Losing to Ohio State with the talent he has is pretty bad. Should have won it all last year with arguably one of the best college basketball teams ever assembled. If UK doesn't make the tourney, and it's a small possibility, then he will be on the hot seat.
Why can'e we look at Bill

What I don't get is we're not going to be a N/C contender every year. Do we want to go back to where we were before Cal came? I remember losing out on recruit after recruit because they didn't want to come here.
Don't want to make people mad, but anyone who thinks we're getting all these 5 stars because we're Kentucky is looking through blue glasses. Let Cal leave and you'll see what I mean.
Players have to be teachable and correctable in order to get better. Hopefully that's the case with this years class.
Cal works his butt off getting the kids here but he and the staff can only instruct. They can't play the game for them.
I feel sorry for the next coach because he's probably gonna see a lot of "he sure can't recruit and coach like Cal".
By the way, I've been a subscriber for 10 years so don't let my low number of posts fool you.

Ridiculous post on so many levels. You don't have the success Cal has had by being just a good recruiter. Only a casual fan with limited knowledge of basketball would think otherwise. Bad losses happen to every coach. In case you didn't know, the coach who is unilaterally considered the best active coach and the one with the most wins in NCAA history has had a number of bad losses. Just last year, you know when they won it all, they lost by 16 AT HOME to a team that didn't make the tournament. And Cal will not be on the hot seat if we don't make the tourney. Well, not by people with any sense that is.

Please root for another team. We don't need fans that put a coach who's been to four final 4s in the last 5 years on the hot seat, period.
