Why aren't Firios and Hendrix getting mentioned to replace Flanigan?

I think they back up Forrest and maybe wouldn't be good fits for the Flannigan spot.

Henderson is backing up Flannigan. Hendrix is not a good candidate for that position. My gut tells me if Love is eligible, Hendrix is not in the two deep at any position. Firios needs work, but is practicing at both ILber positions.

With the way we are recruiting, burning the occasional RS for a player that is showing signs of being able to contribute doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It only bothers me if you are burning RS's b/c you really don't have a choice.

It bothers me in this instance, because it appears to be about need and not about his talents overwhelming the returners.

-First, the comment on Brown is that "they are open to burning his RS." Doesn't mean they will.

-2nd, the reports on Firios have been very good.

-3rd the reports on Brown have been glowing. And the staff mentions that he may see some time with the LB rotation.

So, all of this leads you to believe that the LB is ok......it's just a matter of Brown is just impressing "that" much.

Ok. Brown seems way to light to play on the inside. By the way how are in the inside backers different? They both play on the inside. Looks like they would be interchangeable.

Strong side vs Weak side or backside LB depending on offensive formation, both ILBs have different responsibilities. That's where the difference is. Yes, both should know what the other position is doing, but in a multiple scheme D, going from a base 3-4, to 4-3, to nickel packages, the ILB are not interchangeable.

Aware of the shortage of LBs, Brown approached the coaches about playing instead of redshirting. Coaches said, okay.

We can be optimists about the freshman LBs, but let's be serious - there will be serious growing pains. UK will be facing teams that are not typically throwing true freshman into the fire at this position and others. Hope they are amazing, but things like this should at least lead some to pump the brakes on a truly breakout season.

Right. Love's eligibility situation has a direct bearing on a lot of this, but they aren't confident that Love will be able to play this year. They have to get ready to play Lafayette and South Carolina without Flannigan, Jones, and Love. Sounds like Brown has passed up some of the other backup players in practice and approached Coach Eliot about taking off the redshirt. That's the explanation as far as I can tell. Would be better if Love is granted immediate eligibility and Brown keeps the redshirt on.

Was hoping we would hear about Love this week.....maybe tomorrow ?

If UK can get LBs healthy and off suspension they will have
veteran LB starters. I am however beginning to get somewhat worried that Flanagans shoulder injury is more serious than we have been told.

Love getting the go ahead to play from the NCAA sure would be a big boost for the LB Corp. I just can not understand why they have not ruled one way or the other and got this out of limbo.

I feel like if this staff felt like they were truly going to be burning Brown's redshirt they would discourage him playing this year..it seems like they only want young guys to come in and contribute if they're good enough to play at an SEC level as a true freshman..I think Brown can do that this year (especially in pass coverage) on pure speed and skill alone..plus he'll have an entire year to play and get better, and Stoops talks like Brown's ready to play at a high level right now so I'm good with it

You're assuming the NCAA is an efficient, responsive organization. I hope it's not the case, but Love's paperwork is probably in some bureaucratic backwater.

Firios is getting reps. Seems he does not get a lot of praise. I wonder if Stoops expects a lot from him and is trying to keep him unsatisfied.

Well it seems part of the questions in this thread were answered today. The NCAA has denied Loves request and Hendrix has said he is transferring.

I have suspected for some time that Hendrix was going to an odd man out in the LB Picture. The fact that the was no buzz about him with the ILB picture being what it is was a sure clue that there was something up with him.

What do you people think Loves chances are on his appeal? I would say slim to none. I think it is total BS that the kid is being held to a rule enacted after his transfer. Than again the NCAA has become total BS. The rulings they make have little rhyme or reason.

IMO the present head of the NCAA just might be its worst head ever.

As has been explained previously, the individual LB positions are not interchangeable as they have their own athletic criteria and responsibilities. An experienced, mature guy can be cross-trained to play more than one spot if he fits the position ability criteria but to ask a true Freshman or red shirt Freshman to do this would be asking a lot.

Love being ruled ineligible has no bearing whatsoever on the Will, Sam and Jack positions which is where Brown, Allen and Daniel are working respectively.

With Hendrix leaving, the Mike LB's now are Forrest and Firios. Walk on Frosh Conner John is likely now getting some reps at that MLB spot and may be moved in front of Love.

Flannigan is the starter at Will and has returned to practice but still limited in contact. I expect him to be fine by the first game. His primary backup is Henderson who has started 15 games in the past two years. Jones is also at that position and should be back in a few weeks. Burning Brown's red shirt for what would be just a few snaps in the first two games would be a short-sighted decision IMO.

Firios has been working at both ILber spots. That would suggest great aptitude. But, again, the staff seems intentional in not praising him. Stoops talks frequently about trust. I gather NF is a talent that has not yet earned Stoops' trust. Forrest recieved the same sort of reserved comments prior to this past spring.
