Why are we paying Akron for an away game?

Our AD is the best at negotiating a contract and making it even worse.
If you had stopped at "Our AD is the best", you would have been right.

Honestly, I don't know what people expect from the guy. He has our athletics department in great shape, especially compared to our previous ADs. And unlike our previous ADs, he has kept our athletic programs clean and off probation. He wins national awards. He has remodeled or replaced all of the important facilities. When approached by other schools, he has told them that he is a Kentucky Wildcat. If you are bent out of shape about one away football game, then you are missing the big picture. And I imagine there is more to that story anyway.

Mitch is good at a lot of things. Negotiating skills is not one of them. I honestly think that if he sold his house I could talk him down to $1,000.
He scheduled a game against an in state school in a different state.

Explain this mess than?

UK has scheduled like a half dozen road games at Group of 5 teams stadiums over the last 15 yrs....only 1 actually happened, @Southern Miss 2017. Doubt this trip to Akron occurs, or the Toledo one
Not my point, why would you pay for an away game? We sposed to be SEC.

They customarily pay the opponents to come to their field. All programs do this. This is the way several smaller schools fund their entire program, for the most part. That is why you hear the phrase, The coach at UK is doing Coach X a favor $$$$$$$

Big 12 heavyweights Texas and Oklahoma will also be paying their opponents a pretty penny. Texas is writing North Texas a $875,000 check, while the Sooners will give Louisiana Tech $975,000 just for showing up in Norman

We are paying to show up in Akron. The difference is home game versus road game. We are paying for a road game.

Missing the point. Why are we paying them for an away game?
again, it may have to do with recruiting and guaranteeing we have a game in the area

i am just taking a guess
i have no doubt that there is a story to go with this

How much would Akron get for a game in Lexington?
For a 1 off game? Think the market is $1m-$2m

IMO this is UK evening out the payoff of 2 homegames, spreading some to the road game. Akron budget probably needs the yearly guarantee income.

Again, I doubt this road game actually happens.

You can be a very good AD (which Mitch is), but still have a glaring weakness. He’s terrible at contracts. He just is. BCG not having a contract after 2 years, Mangione contract extension, Cal buy out, Stoops auto 1 year extension for 7-5 and the Elzy contract extension are all proof of that. Again, very good AD, terrible at contracts.

My memory is foggy, but didn’t UK have a game with Akron that was cancelled in the Covid year? Maybe there was some agreement based on that?

just taking a wild guess
maybe Stoops wanted a game in the area for recruiting
It will be a "home" game if UK fans make the trip up. Cleveland is a half an hour away. I work in Akron. One of my guys told me they average about 150 people a game to a decent looking stadium.

But I doubt it happens.

This. We almost always buy the game back. Which is also why I never understand not just negotiating that in the price and making it a home game to begin with.

Everyone knows that's the intention of both parties. Just do it up front

Look the three non conference and non Louisville games are three bums that we need to play 2 in September and one more back in October/November....they need to be home games and it really does not matter who it is.....why we are wraggling with a few home and away is sort of goofy.

This another reason why I hope we go to 9 game SEC slate and 3 non conference.....one of which will be Louisville. There is no reason to play 4 non conference games to be honest. Waste of a weekend later in year. Just have a late bye week in the year.

This is exactly why.

We were going to pay Akron the same total amount for a three game contract, but Mitch has spread the payments over three games instead of two. Y'all can't wait to knee-jerk react to anything, even something that makes good business sense.

Someone told me if/when we go to 9 SEC +UL, don't be surprised if the remaining 2 OOC games are both 1-AA/FCS
Which is fine....is it really any different to play Austin Peay vs. UTC? Who cares if the team is bad vs. really bad talent level. They are all essentially glorified NFL pre season games to be used as warm up/get the kinks out early in schedule.

Guys, it's just some accounting mumbo jumbo.
Cash flow, ROI, depreciation, tax write off. Stocks, bonds, sell, buy, liquidate.

And it's not that complicated.
We had a contract to play 2 and 1, we still are doing a 2 and 1.
Instead of paying 1.8 million in two years, were paying 2 million over 3 years.
Instead of pretending we will travel there in 2023, we are actually going to play them at home 2023 and skip out on the contract in 2024.
We are adding a tiny bit of juice to move up the game.

Sounds like Mitch made a good deal.

What he is trying to say is any small school would gladly take us for free at their stadium because they would sell out and be on TV. There is no need for us to pay to get a team in the are to schedule us. There is obviously more to this story than we are privy to.

Edit:I just read the article. It would seem that this is just contractual semantics. We are underpaying Akron for their visits here and agreeing to a third payment the year we play there. Akron got paid $1.3mm by both OSU and Auburn last year. So UK has negotiated a lower rate with an agreement to spread the payment over three years instead of two and a trip to Akron. The trip to Akron will likely be cancelled, but the $750k will already be guaranteed, so they can set their yearly budget with confidence rather than having to adjust to a lower buyout payout when UK cancels.

For what it's worth, it has been increasingly common for P5 schools to play a midmajor on the road. At least with Akron, it is a game that we probably should easily win, home or away. I think the last time we played a G5 team on the road was Southern Miss, which we won (after losing at home the year before), but it was definitely not a cupcake.

At least it won't be hotter than Hades in Akron... I'm sweating just thinking about it.

This thread sums up the internet in general the past few years
Op can't comprehend an article he read.
Because he trapped in an agenda mindset, Instead of using this place to help understand the issue, starts blasting Mitch. calling it a mess. Assuming he knows better.
Other users, not understanding the limitations of OP, just takes his word for it and don't read the article.
More blasting of Mitch and spreading of misinformation follows.

Wtf is Mitch thinking? Story on KSR. We’re paying then 750K when they host us in 24.

Why??
Evidently, we want to keep the tight ends coming from Ohio. How many tight ends have we signed that are not from the Ohio ?? ... VERY few !! I will bet 80% of our TE signees are from Ohio. It seems a bit excessive. Just saying ...
