Why are our Big's losing the ball so much?

It seems that our big men have the hardest time holding onto the ball. On rebounds or making a move toward the basket, our bigs allow the opposition to knock the ball out of their hands too often.

Why?

Well, it is not the only reason, but they are getting fouled a lot of the time and it's not being called. In the UL game, on the play where Jones head-flopped, the replay shows Dakari getting smacked on the arms at least twice and it wasn't called. Tonight, they showed a replay where I think it was Dakari again, he got smacked in the face and it wasn't called. Again, not the only reason.

There playing soft. They miss too many up close shots. Reason playing soft. Dunk the damn ball.

Dakari gets stripped and blocked so much because he brings the ball to his waistline EVERY time backs somebody down in the post. This might sound dumb, but I honestly think WCS has small hands for his size. The ball flies out of his hands too often when he lifts for a one handed dunk/oop, rebound, floater.... Only explanation I can come up with is his hands. Even when he goes to dunk one handed it seems he uses his wrist to help balance the ball. The other two are Frosh and will lose the ball occasionally. TO's haven't been a big issue this year IMO though. I don't know the numbers but I doubt we average a terrible amount of TO's.

I agree they are playing soft. Our bigs are too skilled and need to keep pounding it inside.

Teams are also packing the paint and making us shoot so we get double teamed everytime ball goes to the paint.

I chalk tonight up to an off night. We will be all good.

This. Omg it drives me nuts. DJ is the worst. I think they will correct it soon, but atm its bad.

It's not just on the offensive end either. When our Bigs go up for defensive rebounds the ball goes through their hands or the opposition knocks the ball out too many times during a game. Cal has been pulling players out for this the last few games, but it is still a problem. i realize our defense and rebounding have been statistically superior to all of our opponents this season, but if we fix this problem, we will become even more dominant.

Louisville gave everyone the blueprint on how to play our bigs. Once the ball goes in, double team and start slapping down on the ball and poking at it. Force the refs to call the hacks and so far they don't on the inside. They only call a foul on the inside on a shot attempt. Prior to that it's everyone for themselves. There was one replay where the Ole Miss guy was just pawing at the ball three or four times until it popped out of Dakaris hands.

Our bigs also don't make their move fast enough or they bring the ball down to their waist.

johnson is our toughest inside player imo. lyles and towns and wcs got pushed off the ball the whole game. wcs looked physically ill. but he got his hands on the ball so many times defensively with his length he was still so valuable, and then he showed up in ot. he bobbled the ball several times and in turn had several turnovers. he didn't look the same. lyles i think is going to be a great rebounder but other than his height he is a long way off. he and towns would be so much better with just a little boxing out. or just go up with two hands more.

i don't think anyone can beat us when our bigs impose their will. tonight i thought we were out hustled most of the game by ole miss in the paint. that very much surprised me and besides them hitting all kinds of tough shots i thought this was a major reason why they were right there the whole time. this i don't think will happen again. no way they should have had that much success on offensive rebounds and loose balls. we were just a little soft, and cal won't let that happen again.

They were getting mugged with no call against Ole Miss, most teams seem to camp out in the paint and hack away with No Call after double and Triple teaming the UK Post players

Dakari and Karl are our two best back to the basket scorers and when we tried to post them up they would make a move and get close to the rim and then get clobbered. That went on for most of the game.

Now, Dakari gets blocked a lot anyways because he pulls the ball down and plays way below the rim for his size. But he got fouled a ton tonight. It reminded me a little of the treatment Julius got from SEC crew last season.

SEC teams are gonna rough us up and hope the refs can't call everything.

Nailed it. They got mauled last night. Right after the super clean Harrison strip, Dakari gets the ball on the other end and turns it over. Looked fishy fromt he start as 3 Ole Miss players where flailing around him. Then they show it in slow motion... and you see Dakari take like 5 slaps.. and I think one to the face.

Check the replay when it gets posted.

This is the main reason. When you see a good team, a more talented team, you make it ugly. DB's do it in football, hack and grab, and take the 5 yd holding call, its better than letting a QB rip you apart. It's the SEC's way of saying we're getting you ready for the NCAA tourney since we can't provide quality teams. Ole Miss is 9-5 and lost to Charleston Southern, then they play us like that?

I've talked to refs who've told me on more than one occasion that there are clusters of refs who like it physical and there are clusters who call it straight up. We simply have to adjust because there's nothing going to be done about it. The only place this beloved game is called the way it should be is in the NBA. Phil Jackson said that this is supposed to be a game of skill and fluidity. Unfortunately, we have people who like it rough and it is what it is.

Looked at some stills of the UL game and they have guys hitting us in the face, across the shoulders, and even one where Montrez is hitting Lee in his "man package" on the dunk. I remember everyone of those plays... and none of them were called fouls.

I posted this in another thread. Our bigs are way to slow to make their move in the paint. They continually give the defense time to swarm them. They also take too many off balance shots and too many jump hooks instead of actually making good strong post moves to the basket. Far too often they just seem to heave the ball towards the basket in some off balance manner. We need more traditional up and under moves, etc. Big guys need to get the defender on their hip and actually make good post moves. We don't do that very often.

They are getting mauled but they need to also do a better job fundamentally. Once a 7 footer catches the ball down low, they must go straight up toward the basket. No dribbling. If they do this they will have better results, possibly scoring the ball before the defender can rip 1/2 the players arm off.

By the time Towns decides on his move, he's got a man in front of him and one on each side.

Our Bigs were bad last night. It was our guard play that saved us. Yeah DJ had a bad night, it started when he let an easy alley-lop go through his hands and he was a step slow on everything after that. He can play better.

WCS helped on D, but he would do a bone head thing like try to drive baseline through a double team and step out of bounds.

And our bigs weren't really crashing the boards until the end of game and overtime. Even lyles should have had a couple of rebounds he didn't grab strong enough.

I imagine our bigs will play with more focus and intensity. It seemed like the lay-off hurt em the most.

yep, them getting mugged is why they are not holding onto the ball

i wish someone would make a highlight video of the last 2 games showing all the hoilding, pushing in the back and just absolute mugging our guys inside have had to deal with
then send that video to the NCAA

as for missing one foot shots, they are rushing their shot and just throwing it up there

Cal answered this question at halftime with the sideline reporterette. "I'm going to ask them to play better," he said. "And I'm going to ask them nicely."
Cal repeatedly says you have to rebound with two hands. This is why. We have what they want.

Found the Dakari slap on the replay. 10:55 mark in the 2nd half. Harrison strips the ball, gets it back to Dakari on the other end, as he drives from the right corner, 32 on Ole Miss literally windmills his arms at Dakari. How is that not a foul? Instead, it's a turnover.

Don't get me wrong, our bigs aren't there yet offensively, and Dakari should have seen the 3 defenders and been more careful.. But that's a foul.. there were about 8 slaps that occurred, about 4 of them thrown before the ball comes out...

Start at 1:11:00

In addition, 32 was Jarvis Summers.. that would have given him 4 fouls on the game (That would have been his 3rd with 10 minutes left, his 4th coming at 4:19 left in the game), he would have had to taken down his physicality or even lose some minutes with foul trouble. Dakari probably gets the bucket or 1 of 2 free throws.

Soft with the ball maybe, but the best reason is defense's sinking in and slapping at it..

The bottom line is our big guys have to be more decisive with the ball. They wait far too long before making their move. They also need to take better shots instead of just throwing the ball towards the basket while they're off balance. Easier said than done, but those are some of their issues. Our big guys have amazing skills/athleticism, but they are not polished at all when it comes to post moves.

^ Nailed it. Catch the ball, make your move quickly.

Dakari takes too much time with the ball. He's almost a guaranteed score when he's one on one with his back to the basket but it's a turnover if he tries to go one on two.

Yep, that was one I was talking about. 32 comes down first with his right hand and may have got him in the face, but the left one definitely did. Very obvious as the movements and there weren't a bunch of other players around to block the view of the officials. I think they may have not called it because on the other end right before that Andrew swiped down and got the steal.

This was killing me last night also. They're guard(Summers, Moody and White) would lean into our guards(Ulis and the Harrisons) and the Ref would call a foul when it was obvious what their guards were doing. Yet our Bigs get hacked and smacked every time they touch the ball with no call. Why is it OK to mug big men and yet the guards can initiate contact and get a foul call? However, Andrew and Aaron rarely get that call on a drive. It gets ridiculous some times during our games.

I'm just asking why?!!!!!

SEC officials suck, and they have sucked the last 2 years. Only the head official can fix this mess. Nothing us fans can do except complain about it.

Don't remember the time but DJ gets the ball inside ,back to the basket, about waist high, OM guys strikes down with one hand-then the other, 2nd OM guy takes another downward swipe, all three looked like MMA strikes across the arms/hands and ball. Of course they knocked the ball loose/no foul called. I'm sure their coach told them its 2 points if you let him put it up and 50% if you put him on the line. Opponents will take those odds as long as you shoot low % on FTs. Also about 50% chance of no foul call.

I think its partially some of the guards play that is messing with the post players ability to handle the ball.

Last night one UK guard made this long over the top pass to a post player on the block....

The post defender was behind our post player and he almost got the ball...

I think he should of bounce pass the ball to the post player. You know how post players like to keep the ball at their waist...

It would've been more comfortable to the post player.

thats all I can think of right now....
