Who wins the SEC this year?

^This guy. I actually like this guy!

Question:

If you think UK is the only team with a chance to win the SEC, who do you think your closest competition is?

Vandy, LSU and A&M...not sure in what order. I'd have to look at the schedules and it is far too early to do that.

So taking away the spread, friendly bet?

I'm all in on friendly bets! What is the wager?

I honestly have no idea how we will look when y'all roll into town. Mason needs to prove he can beat a team when the opposition is evenly matched. To this point, he is zero for his tenure. We have a huge game this saturday night against MTSU. Win there, and I think we have a shot at UK. Lose, and we probably go 1-11.

I'm kinda fond of Vandy this year and the next three though.. Camron Justice is from my old high school.. So I'll be pulling for them to do good,, just not UK good..

As excited as I am about Cam Justice, I don't know if he even gets on the floor this year. We have WBIV at the point, Riley LaChance at the 2/point, Matthew Fisher-Davis at the 2 and Nolan Cressler also at the 2. Guessing that Justice's fastest way onto the court is in a backup PG role, which he can play, but thinking he's more of a 2 at this level.

Do you think he can play the 1 in college? My issue isn't necessarily running the offense but defending on the other end.

Either way, if he can stroke it and play moderate defense, he will get some minutes this year.

I don't think we've ever had a team this deep.

He needs to work on some things to run the point,, but he can do it.. Has good handles,, sees the court well,, isn't super fast but faster than you'd think.. Good slasher.. More suited for the 2 as that's what he played most of his career at Knott.. I wouldn't expect much this year,, give him a year to transition over to college ball but he should play some this year.. You've got a deadly shooter when he gets adjusted.. He can create his own shot behind the line and make it just as good as he can knock down set shots.. You'll be surprised at his D too.. Great on ball defender.. And almost money at the line.. Around 90%+.. Oh,, and when he gets hot,, you'll be completely happy.. Finished 4th on Ky scoring list with 3,587 points..

The funny thing is, y'all might lose to us (we haven't played yet).
Playing in Nashville in basketball is tough I will man up and admit that you all protect your home court well. However in football Nashville is not an intimidating place to play. UK fans have actually out numbered Vandy fans in Nashville for football games before making it virtually home field advantage. Again though in basketball I am never all that confident having to play at Vandy.
Anyway represent well in November and December SEC brother see you later in January and February.

Texas AM, LSU, and Vandy will probably compete for 2nd. Florida may contend if Egbuno, Robinson, hill or chiozza have breakout seasons but I doubt it.

vandy just needs some mystique. like what you'd get from a final four appearance. but that would never happen. so there you have it.

You never know..

We had some mentally weak guys on the last great team we had, I don't think this bunch is that way at all, especially the guards (LaChance and Baldwin). You have to have tough minded competitive guards to win big in hoops and we do have that.

As for Stallings, he's got what it takes and has done great things, but he can't make free throws or shots, the kids have to do that.

LSU is the only team I could see contending for the SEC, with us being the odds on favorite. Obviously Johnny Jones isn't a good coach, but they have some real talent down there. Simmons might one day be an NBA all star.
Not a huge fan of Stallings but I'll root for Vandy when we're not playing themselves. They should be pretty good. Agree with Frieda about LaChance. He might look like a HS player, but the kid has some stones.

I think we are underestimating A&M. They have a good, really experienced team, likely starting four Seniors.

Projected Starters
G Collins(6'1 SR)- fifth year transfer from USF, will likely start at PG (7.1ppg, 5.2apg last year at USF).
G Caruso(6'5 SR)- returning starter (9.1ppg, 37% from 3).
G House(6'7 SR)- leading scorer (14.8ppg, 40% from 3).
F Jones(6'7 SR)- number two scorer (13.7ppg, 6.6rpg).
C Trocha-Morelos(6'10 SO)- athletic big man (or Davis or Thomas here).

Bench
G Robinson(6'1 SO) - 5.2ppg.
G Gilder(6'3 FR)- 4-star, top 100.
F Hogg(6'8 FR)- 4-star, top 40.
F Davis(6'9 FR)- 4-star, top 40.
C Thomas(6'10 FR)- 4-star, top 50.

House, Jones, and Caruso give them a great trio of scorers. Collins is the true PG they have been missing. They have three bigs (Trocha-Morelos, Davis, and Thomas) to rotate in at the 5, giving them some beef inside. Robinson is an experienced guard off the bench. Hogg is their highest ranked recruit and gives them depth at forward.

By the way, didn't we recruit Trocha-Morelos? I'm thinking Cal at least contacted the kid. He is a long and pretty athletic player, could be a pretty good role player for A&M this season (just needs to rebound and play defense). Average 10mpg last year as a Freshman.

A&M looks like a good bet to give LSU a run for their money for 2nd place. Vandy will be a lot better as well, but I see them as fourth in the league. All three should make the tourney.

Aggies, Vandy, and LSU all have the potential to be top 15 and final four teams. LSU has Hornsby who is a great shooter, and Quarterman who can do a little bit of everything and is probably a first round pick if he continues to progress, a promising sophomore point in Jalyn Patterson and Gray to go along with Blakeney and Simmons, and almost forgot Craig Victor who transferred from Arizona. Vandy should be one of, if not the best shooting teams in the country, and has one of the best centers in Damian Jones. Aggies look great on paper as well. Other teams like South Carolina, Miss St, Florida and Georgia should be good too. This is the best the SEC has looked in a long time.

Seriously doubt it.

FF teams require coaching, Jones has zero chance even with Simmons. Stallings couldn't take one of his best teams out of the 1st weekend.

Aggies haven't made the tournament since the 2010 season.

Having a solid win-loss record is one thing. The road to the FF is something else.

This. Some of our fans like to pump up these SEC teams like they are something. They aren't...until proven otherwise.

It wouldn't surprise me if one of those teams had a good year and made a deep run in the tournament, the pieces are there, but I'm also not picking them to make the final four. I just mean the talent level is much higher than it's been for the top teams in the SEC in awhile. It'll be interesting to see how these teams do. If it's the same ole from those teams then the coaching really is very weak.

Surprisingly, I really think it will be Vanderbilt. They have a great core returning group, and the best point guard in the conference. LaChance is going to surprise some people, he has an outside shot at Fist Team All-American. That kid is good! Stallings may not recruit as well as Cal, but he is clearly the best coach in the SEC. I'm actually a little jealous of Vanderbilt this year. Maybe even all time.

I don't pump up the SEC, in the preseason I just judge teams by their rosters, not what they did the previous year. On paper, those three teams look very good.

I think it will be us. We have the most talent and the best coach in the entire SEC. With Tyler Ulis, i can't see us not winning the SEC. I have a lot of faith in Ulis leading our cats. He will be the best point guard in the nation. I know LSU has great talent too, but with LSU, they have Jones as their coach. Overcoming that is going to be huge. Even if you have a talent like Simmons. As good as that kid is, he's not good enough to overcome bad coaching and leading a team to a title. If he does, he's even better than i thought coming in. With that said, i can tell you who won't win the SEC. It is not going to be Vandy. I like their team and they will do better than last year, but not good enough to win the conference. That would be a huge jump. I'm probably the only one in the nation who thinks they will win enough games to make it to the tourney.
