Who was the closest to being the perfect player at every position since you've been a fan

I can't believe nobody mentioned Pat Riley. Tells my age but he was only six four and could jump out of the gym. He had a back injury his Junior or senior year but he was unbelievable. He always jumped center for the opening tip and lost very few.
Question about Riley; does he harbor some ill feelings for UK? I've heard that he's never been back since he graduated which seems odd. Any truth to this? Maybe he's just a low key guy but he doesn't say much about the program.

Are you so old that you can't log onto YouTube and watch some old film or just senile? I am old enough to remember watching Issel but he was about 8-9 years passed his prime. 235lb PF/C. He would be pushed around today. He'd be a face up stretch 4 now. Not quick enough to guard a guard or small forward and would be pushed around by any big. He's not putting up those numbers if you dropped him into today's league. You may have an argument if he could train like today's guys but not playing now as he was then. Drop 7' Durant, who outweighed him, & plays like a guard or Lebron into that era. It'd be like watching men play against boys.
You are a moron and this is a moronic response. give it up.

Issel would've put up numbers in ANY era. As for men vs. boys, that comment is laughable considering that the majority of the players are not even 20 before they enter the NBA.

Wow . . . can't believe this thread got this far without a mention of Kyle Macy at point. May have been the most perfect fit at point ever in a lot of folks opinion. Much better point guard than Wall. Ulis would be next IMO.

Shooting guard - Delk or Chapman

Small Forward - Mashburn

Power Forward - Issel/Kenny Walker tied. Issel was truly a power forward having to play center at 6-9 against some of the best ever in the NBA at 7-0. With his ball fake and ability to knock down jumpers he would have been in the top 5 scorers in NBA history if he could have played power in stead of post.

Center - Davis

I have to agree with you on Macy, if you want the perfect player, Macy could pass, Shoot and ran a team like a coach.

PG - Kyle Macy
SG - Derek Anderson
SF - Jamal Mashburn
PF - Tayshaun Prince
C - Anthony Davis

That starting 5 wins the national championship 4 years straight.

Dan Issel would have been a very average player at best against the athletes of todays game
This can't be a serious statement.
Big Dan is 11th scorer all time in the ABA/NBA.
Do you think those professional players he scored all those points against would say he
was average. He played against Dr. J.
How was his athletic ability? And there is a long list of other great players from that time period who would be stars today if they were playing.

The most complete player that could and did play all positions was Cotton Nash. For those of us that saw him live, which I did while at UK, then we know he did it all. Sweeping the rebound and driving the floor for the layup. Just another day for the Blond Bomber (yes he was before Jay Shidler).

Interesting. I respect Riley's achievements, but I think he's one of the worst 2-3 things to happen to the NBA. Those Knicks and Heat teams were straight out terrible for the sport for a decade or more, and it really took a while for the league to recover. The less he associates with UK, the better I feel about loathing him and his attempt to permanently ruin the NBA.

All you have are insults. No facts other than a 240lb 6'9" Center was great 45 years ago. I'm sure he would destroy Cousins in the post today or take AD to the rack. Gotta love the back in my day guys.

He could have been a double double guy now as a stretch 4, no doubt. But he's not dropping 31 & 17 now. I don't care how old you are, if youre both skilled but I'm bigger, faster, and stronger you're getting bullied.

Sounds like the Westbrook of his time.
