No love for Wall here? He wasn't always the best decision maker as a point guard, but I've never seen anyone dribble the ball as fast and effortless as he did on the break. Whenever he went behind the back and sent a defender flying I lost my shit.

I realize that the phrase “best ball handler” doesn’t necessarily translate into “career assists leader”, but I guess there’s an aesthetic aspect of the phrase and a statistical aspect (assists).

I think the first year for the three-point rule in college basketball was 1986. Here are some (to me, the most relevant) career assists-per-game averages:

Pre-1986:
Dirk Minnefield 5.252 apg
Kyle Macy 4.796 apg

Post-1986:
John Wall 6.513 apg
Sean Woods 5.297 apg
Tyler Ulis 5.292 apg

I don't think anybody else is really close in either category.

(Rajon Rondo 4.191 apg)

*Thanks again for Jon Scott for all of the statistics !

Wall was turnover prone, at least for the first part of the season
