I'm thinking about heading to Columbia for the Cats and the Gamecocks.

Just wondering about the usual stuff. Parking, traffic in and out of the stadium, are the Gamecock fans going to burn my vehicle, etc.

Saw USC play a few years ago. Great environment. Packed like sardines and often hot and sticky. Is the fair happening for the UK game? That would make a difference.

Really been thinking about going! I believe the game could be the biggest one of the season for us.

took a tour bus back during the Mummie years, droppd off and picked up right at the gate. Had a blast on the trip down with good friends, and got a win!!

Went 4 years ago and going back this year. We parked for about $20 and walked about a half mile, no issues with the fans but then they kicked our asses 54-3 I think.

My trips were also with a UK travel bus so I'm not sure about parking but the fans were great not like being at a ul game.

You must have been pickled that day cause Mumme never beat SC, I was there that day also. We led for most of the game but lost.

This is false. I was there also. UK beat USC something like 30-10 in Holtz' first year (Mumme was our coach). i believe that it was 1999 and the last time UK beat USC before losing something like 10 in a row.

Been there three or four times. Tailgating, especially in a Cockaboose, is first class (friend of mine was a huge Cock fan - hard to believe I could be friends with someone so wrong). Fans before the game are fine. At and after the game they're awful, imo. Extremely rude and aggressive and the arrogance is just off the charts. They're a very mediocre program throughout their history but their fans believe they are on the same level as Georgia, Florida, Bama, UT, etc. Yes, they've had great success recently but, on the whole, their program is only slightly better than ours. But, their fans dismiss UK like we're piss ants. I've seen a handful of scuffles at Billy Brice so it's not quite as good as some other posters have stated. Especially if UK is winning, the natives get belligerent. Be careful.

BS (Before Spurrier) Gamecock Nation was pretty pleasant. Great tailgating and socializing before/after the game. Now that they have a taste of winning, gamecockcat is correct. IF you have Gamecock friends, the tailgating/socializing is still pretty good. If not, be careful!

Agree with this. I remember how sorry I felt for them in 1999 when I was at the game, and then watched them evolve into an insufferable group over the last 15 years.

I've been 4 times. I really like their stadium and their fans are reasonable. I give them credit, I was there when we killed them back in Holtz 1-10 year. Like Kentucky, their fans still showed out!

Been to Columbia in 93, 95, 97, 99 and 07. Never had too many issues with the fans, stadium or traffic. Would definitely recommend the trip.....and yes the State Fair is usually in tandem with the game but since its a couple weeks earlier than normal this year, don't know if that would be the case.

Favorite moments....

Cats coming back from 11 down in 4th quarter to win in 93 thanks to Randy Wyatt and Antonio O' Ferral
Moe running for over 200 in the pouring (and I mean pouring rain) in 95

Infamous moment....

In 97 Cats go up 14-0 before you can blink and my buddy stands up and taunts the South Carolina crowd...."Y'all might as well go on over to the fair cause this ones over!" '

Cats lost 38-24

And I agree with the poster who mentioned about feeling sorry for the 99 USC team, maybe the least talented team Ive seen in all my years following the SEC (and that includes ALOT of Vanderbilt teams)

Who knew it would be the last time we won there?

Won 33-28 in Lexington in '98
Won 30-10 in Columbia in '99

He did lose in '97 in Colubmia 24-38 and in 2000 lost in Lexington 17-10.

Columbia sucks. It's hot and humid as hell. Thankfully the game is at night.

Plan to try to enter the stadium at 7 for a 730 kick. It takes forever to navigate the entrance to the stadium. Plus, you'll want to see the 2001 intro.

pickled cat
Expand Collapse and poetax - what bus lines did you guys use? I was on one in 1999 as well.

Regarding the trip, as I said, I was there in 1999 and in 2005 when Little had fumble issues. On both occasions, I was treated very well, some tailgaters just wanted to talk football, etc.

I have found that most fans are cool if you're respectful. As an example: I was at the Kentucky / Arkansas game in Little Rock in 1998/1999. We blew that game and on the way out of the stadium, one of the Arkansas fans started screaming at me as I came down the ramp, "Woo hooo!!!!! WHAT ABOUT THEM HOGS?!?!" I looked at him and said, "Great game guys. You deserved it." He immediately calmed down and said, "You guys have one heck of a quarterback." Nice conversation after that. haha

I always try to be like that and have not had any problems at any games I've been to on the road or at home (SC, Florida, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Arkansas.....)

I went once and will never go back. The fans at the stadium are almost as bad as UT fans. And the racism is RAMPANT. We actually had a guy use the N word in front of an obviously black UK fan.

Went down there in '09. Had a fairly good time. Their fans get into it way more than we do. Had Hartline not gotten injured, we win that game.

I'm three for three in Columbia. Went to Thursday night game in 1993 that we won. The Moe Williams game was unbelievable and then Coach Mumme beat them up, so it's time to try for four. My biggest memory is that damn Rooster sound that they play over and over. Otherwise, I think it is a neat place, passionate fans and not far from the beach to combine with the game.

stadium is a bit outdated...but a pretty good time tailgating and good times down town after the game. 2 years ago, Tin Roof was pretty fun. Stay downtown. Lots of fun

Was there once for my wifes aunt and uncle 50th anniversary and got tickets. It was the saturday in a heavy rain when Mo Williams went off on them. Had a blast.

Remember that game, Moe Williams was a force that they had no answer for in the rain, He reminded me of a mudder in horse racing, he was in his element and they could do nothing to contain him.

Have been many times.Great atmosphere.Traffic isnt too bad.ALWAYS hit the Palmetto Pig before the game.Great gameday food.We always come in off 95 so its pretty easy getting in and out.Lots of Fighting Cock being passed around.

I've been many times as well. Trying to be there for a win on their soil and it's never happened for me. Their fans are a little big headed in my opinion. It's like a NASCAR environment. Tailgating around the stadium is okay but sometimes you will park a have a decent walk to the stadium. My advice wear a plain white shirt with no logos on it and you will be fine.

i went in '07. had a good time despite the loss - i think that was a Thurs night game so place was pretty jacked. fans are either over the top polite or over the top jerks - no middle ground there. had a car flag on car and someone tried to break it off and broke the window instead. good car flag. worth a visit if youve never been

I went to the game in 2005. This was the game where we lost fumbles on 4 straight plays in the 2nd half.

IIRC, I parked for free. It was during the fair, but the schedule has changed, so I don't think it will be during the fair again this year.

Our seats ended up being in the UK section, so it was fine. Sat next to a Gamecock fan, who was appropriately friendly. Gave me a lot of insight into the team, style of play, etc.

Be thankful for the 7:30 start this year. Any type of afternoon game would likely be brutal, as far as weather goes.
