What's Slice's pitch to Cheick Diallo now?

I live in Lex, I know there is a another Brian Poe here, and one in Paris.

My family is from Bracken County near Maysville.

not much to sell about playing at home, in front of your family & friends at MSG...and for a St. Johns legend in Mullin.

On the other hand, Kentucky is an easy sell that really doesn't have to be made either. Play for an excellent coach, in front of College basketball's best fans, and for the winningest program in College hoops history.

If I had to guess, I would take a wild one & say he picks home. But one certainly can never count Cal out.

I was not arguing that StJohns trumps .UK because it doesn't. My response was concerning the guy that was downplaying NYC. NYC has every sports team , entertainment bars and some of the best food in the world. UK offers way more than StJohns from a basketball perspective by a long shot and I hope he chooses us but you cannot discount being close to home and draw of big city.

I don't understand why playing close to home would be so important to any recruit who is expected to be one and done. They will only be in school for 8-10 months and choosing the right coach and the right system should have a much greater bearing on their decision. Being away from home could actually help them mature and be more ready for their future in the NBA. At UK, players are treated as celebrities and even the ones who don't go on to play pro ball are pretty much guaranteed a successful future because of their connection to the program. I'm not sure that's the case at most schools.

Strongly Disagree. Trying to compare Lexington to NYC for living/fun is like trying to compare NYC to Lexington for college basketball. Both have an insurmountable advantage.

Glad Briscoe, who lives a stone's throw from Manhattan, decided to slum it in Lexington.

What the crap does that have to do with anything. I'm sure he's going to be checking out a broadway play in between classes and eating the Ritz. He could be in Cow Pile Iowa going to school and the campus/college life will virtually be the same period

But the experience of being a UK basketball player vs. a St Johns player would be night and day for how he's treated and his experience on the college basketball stage while he's there. In that area, Lexington >>>>>>>>New York\ and it's not even close.

College life is great at any university that has a "college town" feel. UK has that, being in Lexington. But it's not NYC. No kid dreams of going to Kentucky. Every kid dreams of Manhattan and NYC. It's nothing against Lexington/UK/Kentucky.. it's just NYC and everyone else. Same thing as Kentucky basketball and everyone else.
Not trying to be smart but - Like what? What is an 18 year old young man going to go in NYC that he can't do in Lexington. Once again, it's not about comparing Lexington to NYC. He's an 18 year old kid. He's going to class, going to practice, going to McDonald, Two Keys, occasionally a movie . .

And throw in that while he's doing those things in Lex he's treated like he's in Hollywood. Nobody will notice him in NYC then or after unless he makes it big.

Wow! Both my parents are from Bracken County.

Some of these responses are awesome. Best entertainment today.

In reality, what is the at issue is relationship. From what we have read Slice has been recruiting this kid for quite some time and everyone seems to say Slice is this fantastic recruiter with all kinds of connections. So, if he is pals with the high school coach, handlers behind the scenes, a relationship with the family, friends, relatives, etc. going to be hard to beat. Since when does logic fit with the equation?

He is serious.

And stop calling him Shirley!

"Cheick, come get your buckets here..."

pretty simple pitch now for Slice...

...and just to chime in on what NY may have to offer a college kid vs Lexington Ky...ummm, pretty much everything but weirdos who want to lick your car...

he would be a star at St. John's, he would get just as many girls at St. John's...maybe more since he wouldn't have to share with other first rounders....

UK players go to the Fayette Mall...he could go to Times Square...maybe catch a Yankees, Mets, Giants, Knicks, or Nets game...

No, I said earlier that Shirley is the name of my Aunt.

This thread was started at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning. Here's what I posted in another thread on this subject at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday night:

Two years ago, Slice was saying, "Cheick, the best thing for you is for you to go to Pitt."
Last year, Slice was saying, ""Cheick, the best thing for you is for you to go to Kentucky."
Now, Slice is saying, "Cheick, the best thing for you is for you to go to St. John's."

If the foregoing is correct, how can Slice have any credibility with the kid?

As everyone knows, all Slice is really saying is "Cheick, the best thing for you is to come with me, and take your chances with a head coach who has never coached a single college game."

Maybe that'll sell to a potential Lottery Pick -- but I sure wouldn't think so.

Just MHO, of course.

With Matt Jones now reporting that Diallo contacted U.K. and asked Cal to come for another in-home visit, it seems that Cheick may be realizing -- or may have already realized -- that he should disregard Slice's "advice" on this matter.

Come on down to U.K., Cheick ! Go 'Cats ! ! !

You raised some good points. Forgot about the "Hollywood" factor that he would get while in Lexington. But still, Lexington is far off from NYC, and I want to repeat that this is no slight to Lexington or Kentucky.. Not many cities or places can match up against NYC, certainly not for an 18 year old.

Yes you can party, explore, drink, see a movie, find local food, meet girls in any city... But no city does it like NYC. I really think for as far off as St. Johns is from UK in basketball, Lexington is that far off from NYC. Never underestimate the simplicity of a destination for a recruit. A lot of kids love NYC, some never have been, it's definitely a draw for many.

Not that it really matters, but it looks like last season they played 10 games in MSG outiside of the Big East tournament, and 10 in Carnesecca Arena. Which holds all of 5,600 fans.
