It’s a leap, sure. But bigger leaps have been made. Someone mentioned Auburn. They went 7-5 before their championship season. Georgia went 7-5 before they made it to the CFP championship in ‘16. We need some pieces (and some luck), but we can’t say it’s impossible when bigger leaps have been made. We know it isn’t likely. The real discussion is what it would take. And there’s quite a leap from getting to 10 wins to being SEC champs and playing for a national title.
Instead of saying “string a few top 10 recruiting classes together & find an elite QB” (which is absolutely the most realistic way BTW), it might be fun to break it down & just look at next year. Is there any reasonable way we could get in the CFP next year? I know it sounds crazy & would take A LOT of luck (just because I live in TN doesn’t mean I’m delusional LOL).
1. Levis takes a big step forward with a full off-season.
2. Shore up the OL & don’t take a step back there
3. We find/develop a couple (more) good DBs-need a big improvement at the DB position.
4. T. Rob turns out to be great, and we get/develop a very good/great X to go with him with solid backups (overall step forward at WR)
5. Flip the ugly turnover margin back to the + side
6. Stay healthy (it’s never going to be 100% but it has to be very good)
7. Better pass rush.
Is it possible? Sure it is, but that’s A LOT to ask in one year. All of them are reasonable asks, but when you add it all up the odds aren’t in our favor. Let’s say it would take all of them to win the CFP & all of them are 50/50 (which I don’t necessarily agree with either of those premises). The odds of going 7/7 are 128:1. The odds are already out for next year’s CFP champion. Our odds are 125:1 (so pretty close).
Screw it… I’m still predicting 15-0! Go Cats!
