One of the posters (I don't remember who) said that he would post what went down with the Marrow situation. Along with every other UK fan, I would appreciate that person's thoughts.

That was a statement about UK football by Marrow, Mitch and Stoops.

GO CATS!!

Seems like a relatively straightforward situation. Harbaugh approached him due to his recruiting prowess and connections in Ohio. Marrow used it as leverage to get a raise at UK.

We also have to think that we are going to lose Marrow at some point. The nature of coaching is that you switch jobs a lot.....often through promotion. It is likely that someone will approach Marrow with a promotion. We won't always have the ability (or want???) to promote him.

Mitch won't get any credit by most on here...his name would only be mentioned if Marrow had left as the villain.

Tim Couch or Mike Pratt will get the credit......

JH wanted Marrow to stick it to Meyer. It was about Meyer and not about wanting a good TE coach. Marrow was being used but he would have been paid well to be used. He was really wanted by UM for that reason....but he's really NEEDED at KY. It was pretty simple after that...was UK going to show a continued commitment to football by not letting money be the deciding factor. It wasn't' and VM is back where he is needed.

Funny thing....when Marrow to UM broke I thought no way he'd go. After a few days I thought no way he'd stay. Odd how feelings go back and forth. Certainly glad he's staying put.

Felt the same way. There was a lot of bad info out there at first. Glad he's at UK, he's really good at this recruiting thing. :)

Oddly enough, Kapital, that the TE position is one of the biggest cogs in Harbaugh's offense. So, Harbaugh (a seasoned and elite coach) not only wanted an elite recruiter but he felt enough about Marrow's talent as a TE coach (in a huge pivotal position). This is in contradiction to what some UK posters feel about Marrow's TE coaching ability.

Should Marrow have been promoted to OC?

Does his deal include some sort of promotion up the offensive ranks?

I wonder what it was that gave UK the edge...had to have been more than just money...some more say in recruiting I'm sure and maybe even development and offensive strategy...

UM and Harbaugh are about as high as you can get...that would have fast tracked Marrow to any job he wanted college, and NFL...with all of Jim's connections...heck he may have taken Marrow with him to the league the next time he goes...

Actually it sounded like it wasn't guaranteed that he would be a TE coach at Michigan. At least that's the word going around.

It's obvious he has a more integral position at UK than he would have had at Michigan. He has power here that he may not necessarily had had at Meechigan

No. for gods sake, he was just a grad assistant at Nebraska 2 years ago.

I doubt it. Maybe they will make him associate head coach in addition to being recruiting coordinator, in addition to a raise that was going to come his way this offseason even if Michigan hadn't happened.

Count me as one who fell out of love with Mitch Barnhart.... Probably won't ever be a big fan but he doesn't dictate my interactions with my team of choice nor will he be a big part in my ticket buying decisions... Don't know the guy, and don't know how he manages his business... All I know is what I see on the field and court and how our State is represented by the young men getting a free education to play sport.... This Vince Marrow thing is a positive step for UK... I'm happy for Stoops and MB for the success the retention of Marrow represents... UK needs success in every area and I hope that accumulated successes = wins... MB does get a lot of blame and maybe some isn't justified... I don't have a problem giving MB two thumbs up on the VM news.

Lee Todd has escaped criticism as well as a few that sit on a Board... While on the subject I'd like to point out that good things have happened (football wise) since Eli road into town... Mr. Capilouto I suspect should get some credit but there again I only know it's reported he likes football...

I'm not putting a whole lot into anyone playing a big role in Vince staying... I'll believe that the money was about as good here, he likes being on Stoops Staff, likes Lexington okay, and the timing just wasn't right, and maybe he'd like to reap the rewards of his efforts here and not start over again... Besides that he's from Ohio and not Michigan... Interviewing and remaining active in the job market is something most everyone does if they have hope for advancement.... He's a guy like all the rest of us trying to do what's best for his career. I'm happy that he's happy spending some more time with us... I sure wish I could dance as good as he does....... I never get tired of that GIF and would appreciate more dance videos from VM....

The stuff I'm hearing is that Marrow wasn't told an exact position. They wanted him more for his Ohio ties and to send a message to Meyer.

I doubt the whole story will ever be told. But hats off to Barnhart, Stoops, the admin and anyone else that helped keep a key asset here vs. leaving however it was done. These kind of things have to be done if UK wants to reach a better place in football.

That was a statement about UK football by Marrow, Mitch and Stoops.

GO CATS!!
Mitch won't get any credit by most on here...his name would only be mentioned if Marrow had left as the villain.
Since Mitch has hired Stoops (and we've got the new SEC contract), Mitch has done most everything within reason to commit to football. I commend him for that, but he's not the savior of UK football like some of you try to assert. It's not like it's exactly a difficult position for him to take at this point. The money is there from the SEC tv deal, and he had no option but to commit 110% after he completely lost the fan base with the Joker fiasco and the microwave comments. I am very excited for the future of UK football, and am pleasantly surprised at the shift in decision making, but Mitch finally doing what's right when his back was against the wall doesn't make up for all the years he neglected football...nor do I necessarily have confidence that he won't revert back to his old ways at some point if he doesn't feel pressured by the fan base. When you consider the amount of money coming in from the SEC deal, it wouldn't just be poor decision making...it would be an active FU to the fans, Mark Stoops, and the program itself, if Mitch wasn't doing everything it took to commit to football.

We will know at some point how much he is being raised to, as that is a public record. Should be leaked within a week I'd guess.

Excellent post, and the way I feel. UK lost millions of dollars from the fans bailing out JUSTIFIABLY from the non-support for ten years, I don't feel like he had any choice but to do what he has done recently. .

Sounds like we will never know what really happened, and who knows, maybe Stoops financial advisor told him the best investment he could ever make was to slip Marrow a couple hundred thou on the side, privately so other coaches wouldn't try the same thing, it definitely could make the difference in him getting a million dollar raise in a few years or getting fired. Not that he should have to give his money back when the University is the big winner here.

Pretty sure he is smart enough to have figured it out on his own and doubt if he did have to pay the money out of his pocket (Brooks did, and sounds like Harbaugh did also) but I sent him an email last night before the news broke, didn't spell out what I wanted to suggest but asked him to call me. Alas, guess he didn't need my help, LOL, maybe I will get a form reply in a few days saying he is extremely busy (and I'm sure he is) but will reply ASAP, like the NCAA did when I emailed them about the reasons Jarmon's suspension was way too harsh------still waiting on that reply also..

However it worked, just extremely glad that it worked.

Absolutely how I feel as well. He passed over numerous opportunities to improve stadium, not lose capacity and maintain a loyal and growing fan base when Brooks was here. Player amenities would have been part of that. An absolute shame he did this when interest is down. Will be interesting to see how many season tix sell this year. Many were so disillusioned and disgusted with lack of administrative support they chose to drop season tix and pick a game here and there. Never Ever been any athletic program of this magnitude mismanaged for so long. FINALLY we may be seeing the beginning of a new philosophy regarding UK football. One that will allow us to succeed and even flourish. Still, losing 6000 capacity was horrendous.. GOSTOOPSGOMARROWGOCATSGOBBN!!!!!!!!

People who don't even go to games crying about stadium capacity is too funny. We had 10,000 empty seats a game even with discounted tickets. You're mad that it wasn't 17,000 empty seats?

Some will never understand it.....they just need something to be mad about.....lets beat the hell out of this dead horse as long as we can.......

I've been going to games since 76 and have had season tickets since 1983.. Having a significant number of empty seats on a regular basis is a recent phenomenon. Granted, over the years, we'd see a small crowd here and there, but for the most part the stadium was generally near full. The noticeable drop in attendance occurred during the JP years. During those years, a bunch of the older fans who made attending a game a big part of their social lives either got too old to attend or realized it was much easier (and cheaper) to sit at home and watch a poor team. Many in that group have not come back. Further add many of the younger people would rather sit hom and play Madden than attend a real game.

Personally, I don't believe reducing capacity is a good thing...if we have a championship team, you could sell 90k tickets easily.

20, even 10 years ago, there would never have been 20k seats available for an SEC game.

Bwahaha, Stoops slide Marrow a couple hundred thousand on the side. It's easy to tell who's about UK and who's about their agenda. There is zero chance he was paid out of anyone's pocket.

Losing 6,000 seats and adding amenities is exactly what UK needed. We will still have more seats than this year's soon to be national champs (Oregon). Also, if you would do your homework, you would see the vast majority of the eliminated seats came from the student ticket allotment. The UK students have used their full allotment of tickets for years. Mitch moved them to the end zone and opened up the old student section on the sideline for fans who want to be there and will pay for those tickets. With every game on TV it is necessary to decrease capacity. I, for one, am very excited about the new amenities and practice facilities. UK football is on the rise and much of the credit should go to Barnhart. Don't forget that we went to five bowl games in a row on his watch. That has never been done before, but looks like it is about to happen again.

They don't even go to games and complain about 6,000 unused seats instead of concentrating on the $110 million stadium renovation, the $45 million training facility that will compete with the elite facilities in the country, unprecedented recruiting classes 3 years in a row, and last but certainly not least, the magic recruiting room that is supposed to solve all of our problems. Think about that. Bill Parcells described that little group perfectly at the end of his great HOF speech.

Everybody has always blamed MB every time it came to money with fb...Have you ever thought he has a BOT to report to...One little note here about all that is going on in fb that you may not realize...From what I understand, ALL the money raised for the new practice facility was given by boosters that had NEVER given anything to fb before...only basketball...Who is responsible for that and how happy are the basketball only fans of which there are many...

#WHY NOT

Agree totally. I have season tix for years. Keyser and big blue. They must be on Barney's payroll. Point is. MB had his priorities misplaced for years. I hope he sees the light now but his actions regarding CWS were borderline criminal. Still he appears to be an improvement considering the stoops contract and marrow situation.

Count me in this camp of thinking also. I get extremely tired of posters on here telling everybody about their bruised feelings and running the program they say they support into the ground.

It really does sound like little boys crying for their Mommy because they have got a boo-boo. I get so tired of full grown snivelers that cannot hear themselves or realize we have all heard it before. You would think they would tire of it but I truly believe sniveling is their biggest accomplishment in the world of sports.

When they read this they will most likely do what little boys do when mommy ignores them----- increased the volume.

It took the total destrction of the program under Joker to get real change to occur.

cause it was in such great shape when he took over
flush.r191677.gif

when barnhart took over (2002), uk football had been to 3 bowl game in the previous 17 years. it had just been put under a harsh probation (bowl ban, loss of 20 scholarships over a FOUR year period).

under barnhart, kentucky football has been to 5 bowl games in 12 years they have been eligible. operated under strict ncaa compliance (see jeremy jarmon). he has cleaned out the good ole boy network from uk athletics and has improved every program in the department not named basketball (the only sport the good ole boys cared about)

wonder why he had trouble raising money? he pissed alot of people off that were used to having their ace kissed by cm and buddies. these same people were what was wrong with uk athletics as a whole.

Optimus. How quickly you forget. "Total destruction?" Do you know how many times we've been in a similar program state over the last 50-60 yrs to when Joker left? The answer is WAY too many times. As in MUCH more than once. It happened often enough that Joker almost went par for the course.

This is so very true. Folks like to bury their head in the sand and not "really" look at what Mitch has accomplished. All UK ADs before Mitch didn't give a s*** about any sport but basketball.

But don't confuse these folks with any facts......their minds are already made up.

Season tix since 82 and not on the payroll. But I am a realist and possessed with more than enough common sense and UK background/history/knowledge to see things for what they are. One only has to go back far enough to see what MB has done in comparison with the previous four AD's to see how fortunate we are.

Everyone is is entitled to their opinion, my issue is with people who refuse to open up their eyes far enough to see what is staring them in the face. But I digress....

One thing I would be curious to know is how many of the complainers are honestly UK supporters. Do they donate money to the K-Fund, the University, support the entire sports program and cheer for all UK sports or are they just Internet whiners who aren't happy if they aren't complaining about something.

I would like to hear more about how JH wanted Marrow to stick it to Meyer? Marrow has never proven the can out recruit Meyer for any players. Best I can tell UK has signed only 1 player offered by OSU. ON the other hand maybe with Mich resources he could have gone head to head with Meyer but I doubt it. OSU will get most of the Ohio kids they want.

Just my opinion but I think Marrow is young and he knows at UK he the top dog and paid almost like the OC & DC. At Michigan he would be a bottom level guy. The old saying is sometimes it is better to be the big fish in a smaller pond than the small fish in the bigger pond. He has a nice fat 3 year contract so he is a happy camper.

Hey, you aren't a bad poster in general, like a lot of others that don't want to look at the facts, how about pointing out ONE THING that mitch gave the football program for the first TEN years of his reign. Recruting budgets for 25 commits less than for 4 basketball recruits, operating budget the same for 85 rides as for 13 rides, not even replacing the folding chairs in the "recruiting room" (although they went well with the concrete floor), letting Brooks give Joker part of his salary ($700K for the HC when he started) instead of paying him himself, keeping Brown on as the "Co DC", LOL, so he could save the severance pay, you name it. Meanwhile the SEC schools, UK included, were getting unexpected $5,000,000 bonuses from new contracts and SEC distributions, MOST of it due to SEC football.

The ONE thing he did for football besides the BARE MINIMUM was replacing the video system, not sure if it was in his first ten years or not-----BARELY before the revolt by fans over that, TWO years after they were scheduled to be replaced. While he couldn't possibley raise the money for them earlier he replaced the money the faculty refused to LOAN the football program in about ONE DAY when athletics had been GIVING academics millions a year all this time.

He did a lot for his programs, the BARE MINIMUM for the money cow, and the facts prove it.

If crowds dictate it we could easily add 15000 seats in an off-season. But let's have some sellouts first.......

A very good possibility we won't ever know all the details, should be a little clearer when the new salary from UK comes out. It is entirely possible that Tim or some other multimillionaire (think he signed about a $50,000,000 contract as the #1) deigned to throw in an extra hundred thou or so, in fact I tried to contact Stoops to tell him (although he shouldn't have to do what Brooks had to do, give part of his salary to an assistant, bad precedent) that slipping a hundred thou or more to Marrow could be the best investment he could ever make, (seriously) could be the difference in getting fired in a few years or another million dollar raise each year. But by then it was already settled, maybe the right way, who knows.

I do know this was a crisis we passed. we could have not only lost a lot of prestige as a program but also some very good commits this year PLUS a lot more in the future.

Marrow named a top 25 recruiter, assistant from TU #1, Tee Martin at USCw also on the list. Just think of what Marrow could do with the money spent in Knoxville, the talent and tradition in California, or even the tradition AND 100,000 seat stadium of Michigan.

I think Stoops Troops are a great recruiting team, essential to keep the best one, and I expect things to get even better from here on out.
