What is your new Starting 5?

We now literally have two really good teams to throw at people. Quality depth wise AL, ILL and Kansas comes to mind but our depth may be more proven and older.
I can't remember a UK team going into the season where the 10th man has a legitimate chance to start.

Our 10th man (Almonor) is a legitimate scoring threat who hit 93 threes last season on a 39% clip. Chandler is also going to be better than people are projecting. I could see him starting at the shooting guard spot.

Have we ever had a team where all thirteen players are really good? Every player is really good at something and most are good at multiple things. And the majority of the team are hardened veterans that will not rattle easily.

All speculation as of now nobody knows who will start. The best five will eventually start. It's going to be earned and not given. You best believe it's going to be a battle in practice. What I do know we have a mature and skilled team with depth on the bench. I can not wait until our first exhibition game.

Yes! And our 3 freshman, one is the highest rated recruit BYU has ever had, and two are two of the best high school players the state of Kentucky has ever had. Pretty exciting.

By midseason:

G - Kriisa
G - Chandler
G - Robinson
F - Carr
C - Williams

Chandler is going to be much better than any of us think. He's a former top 30 kid who is now two years older.
I agree on Chandler. I'm not sure Robinson wants to start. He may change his mind on that one. I think Butler is a starter from day one.

G Butler
G Robinson
G Oweh
F Carr
F Williams

I am putting Oweh in to start, because of his play at both ends of the court. He can score and defend. At 6’4, 215 he is a phyiscal presence.

Butler/Oweh/Williams form a powerful core on defense. Robinson/Oweh/Carr give us scoring. That’s a good balanced lineup.

Also, Brea has said he likes coming off the bench, so he might stay in that role.

I think Pope goes 10 deep (listed in order of the minutes I think each plays):

G Kriisa
G Brea
F Garrison
F Almonor
G Chandler

Not totally sold on Chandler yet. I am going to say he is rusty after two years away from basketball and will need a year before he becomes a major contributor. If I am wrong and he is ready to go as a Freshman, then that’s a good thing.

Beginning of the season

Starters

1: Butler 25 mpg
2: Brea. 20 mpg
3: Oweh 20 mpg
4: Carr 25 mpg
5: Williams 20 mpg

Subs
1: Kriisa 15 mpg
2: Chandler 10 mpg
3: Robinson 20 mpg
4: Almonor 15 mpg
5: Garrison 20 mpg

Deep subs
1: Perry 5 mpg
2: Noah 5 mpg

Pope will use more bodies early in the season and will test out different lineup combinations and sets to get a feel for the team. I think he actually may try to get a solid 10 man rotation early, and get both Perry and Noah some time against overmatched teams.

Later in the season, Pope will still keep a 10 man rotation, but will have figured out his starters and those guys will be getting at least 25 minutes per game. If the team stays healthy, Pope may be able to platoon in certain situations. This roster has good depth and balance.

Assuming sixth man will be Garrison because Williams will play least amount of minutes out of the starters. Robinson will play the most minutes which probably places Oweh as the 8th man rather than 6th or 7th. I also do not expect a large discrepancy in minutes between the sixth and eighth guys.

I’ll be shocked if Garrison plays much next year. I think some of you are living in never-never land. The kid hasn’t played competitively in two years. Maybe he gets some minutes towards the end of the year…

Strength in numbers for sure. The coaches will need to be good at dealing with minute distribution and handling egos.

Chandler hasn’t played any competitive ball in 2 years. I don’t see him sniffing the starting lineup this year.

Brea will play a lot of minutes

If Oweh makes any jump at all he might be starting. He is the 2nd best defensive guard and can guard 1-4. He is strong enough to block out and such. He is good on offense but if he makes the jump from 11 to say 15 points a game, cuts down TO and such he will see the floor a ton and if Pope wants his best defense out there he will have Butler, Oweh, Robinson, Carr or Almonor and Williams.

Robinson and Brea need more than 20 minutes

PG starter is a tough call until we see them play in Pope’s offense. Maybe play both 20 minutes and go with Butler when you need defense but I wouldn’t play Butler and Oweh too much together as we’d be lacking shooting

Butler/Kriisa
Brea
Robinson
Carr
Williams

Oweh is your 6th man
Butler/Kriisa
Garrison
Almonor

That should be a solid 9 man rotation and hopefully 1 or 2 of the freshmen step up to get spot minutes

I would say this is likely the starting lineup. Brea and Kriisa will be the situational/6th man of the year candidates and Garrison, Almonor and Chandler could be 6th men before the end of the year. We have very deep talent and 2 really good Ky boys who if anyone slips up or starts taking it easy might just snag serious minutes. I can't wait.

Hear me out guys, lets go with this starting lineup so we could have a backup 5 be the nuclear lineup

Starters
Pg- Butler 50% from 2pt range, great catch and shoot 3's, elite defender
Sg- Robinson - offensive player but really good defender as well
Sf- Oweh - 37% 3pt and over 50% 2pt, great defensive player
Pf- Carr - 38% 3pt and over 50% 2pt , good defender
C - Williams - over 55% FG , elite defender.

Ok this grew comes in and scores efficiently and just defends well, really wears down opponents then the nuclear lineup comes in

Pg- Kriisa - 42% 3pt shooter
Sg- Brea - 50% 3pt shooter
Sf- Chandler , said to be a very good shooter, if not him then Noah at 42% 3pt
Pf- Ansley Almonor - 39.5% 3pt shooter
C - Garrison - 57% FG and with shooters around him that will be even higher

and they can just go to town on teams tiring out

now who do I think will start, Butler, Brea, Robinson, Carr, and Williams. I could also see later in the year Kriisa , Oweh or Garrison improving enough to earn starting some games

Butler
Oweah
Robinson
Carr
Williams

Halfway through SEC play, I think it could be Garrison over Carr. Brea and Oweah could swap, numbers alone can’t predict who it’ll be. We’ll have to see how the team plays together and what the early season numbers look like.

The good news is, Pope will play the best lineups.

I think you are correct. Unless Robinson wants to be in the sixth man role again then I switch he and oweh. I doubt anyone will play much more than 25 mins a game. Popes planning on going a full 10 deep I think

PG. Butler. Good stable floor general. Great defender. Not flashy. Can get to rim, but won’t over penetrate to force a bad shot.

SG. The position is Shooting guard, and Brea can knock it down.

SF. Robinson. Swiss Army knife who does everything well.

PF. Carr. I think many are underestimating this guy. Really good outside shooter. Good handles for a big. Has a post up game as well and not afraid to mix it up inside.

C. Williams. Elite post defender. Very good on the boards. Good post offensive weapon with high BB IQ with passing skills.

Off the bench

KK. Not unthinkable to see him starting. More offensively dynamic. Has been a bit turnover prone in the past. Very good outside shooter. Tough. Won’t back down.

Chandler. Good shooter with good size on the perimeter. More athletic than some might expect

Oweh. Very physical specimen. Can finish at the rim in traffic. Slightly better than average shooter.

AA. Very good shooter from the 4. Very versatile defender.

Garrison. Not much drop off from Williams

Perry. Will get some run at point and some at the 2. If KK is having a bad night and/or a little out of control, I think Perry could slide in nicely

Noah. I could see him picking up minutes at 2, 3, or even 4. Probably a defensive liability at any position right now, but will improve with time. A scoring threat from anywhere on the court.

I don’t expect us to “platoon”. But I do see at least 10 players getting more than 10 minutes a game and 2 other guys capable of contributing in a positive way when called upon.
