What exactly is Jerry Tipton's problem?

FYI:
* The HL was well over double (almost 140k) back in the 1980's.
* Today their circulation is about 60k.
* They have remained viable by 1) syndicating...2) expanding their printing business...3) embracing the internet
I can't believe there are 60K people stupid enough to still buy that absolutely awful shit rag of a paper. Honestly, how can anyone who calls themselves a UK fan still give money to a company that employs people like Tipton?
On a similar line of thought, why hasn't UK revoked Tipton's press credentials already? Enough is enough!

I just read an article he wrote (didn't know he was the author til afterward) about Calipari's 30 for 30 and he managed to still construct parts as a slight and following the article, made mention of "death threats" by Kentucky fans and then discussed how announcers being critical of refs can incite violence (idiotic). Fans have eyeballs.

But this tool seems to have been critical of this program for my entire life. I've never seen a sports beat writer show so much dislike toward the subject he's covering. Most guys tend to have some cheerleader in them (not asking for that) but he's always negative. He also seems to love discussing the 80s scandal.

What is this guy's problem? Where does he come from and has he always been like this? He's honestly the worst. I remember being beside him at a book signing of Cal's in 2009 and remember reading what he wrote later being exaggerated and no shortage of jabs.
Good, well wriiten post. I agree. I've always wondered exactly what is his problem. He is a master ax grinder, and is totally and complete bent on the negative. One can onbly imagine both why he is this way and why he continues to be employed covering the best college program for its hometown newspaper (and I use "newpaper" loosely!). It'll never change...he is a hyper antagonist.

The LHL used to call me once per week and ask if I would renew my subscription (I cancelled it back in 2002). Each time, I ask, is Jerry Tipton still writing for the paper? They say yes, I say then no. I let them know to call me back when they fire that dick.
Same here. They also used to have someone set up at Kroger in Richmond, and I would ask the same question, and when they said yes, he's still with the LHL, I told them I would never buy one of their papers until he was gone.

I've wondered about why they don't revoke his credentials but I imagine it would go like this. It becomes a huge story where Tipton acts like a victim and a martyr and fellow journalists will come to his aide and talk about the virtues of the press and how Cal/UK don't want the "truthful watchdog" to expose them and only want positive stories.

You've seen this tactic in the political battlefield. It would be similar but on a smaller level.

IIRC, Tipton was the one who wrote the story the LHL ran the day before Rick Pitino was hired describing the minor NCAA infractions that occurred at Hawaii while Pitino was there in his first job years before. He had to scrape the barrel to find SOMETHING negative to write about Pitino. My guess is he was apoplectic when Pitino took the job because he knew how fast Pitino would turn around the program he thought he had ruined forever. Pitino didn't like him any better than Cal does.

* Back in 1986, HL received a Pulitzer for burying UK for the Eddie Satan mess
* Since then, Tipton has carried the HL banner as UK's cynical watchdog
* He's one of the smartest in the business
* He's definitely the biggest smartazz in the business
* If God ever changes His mind about revenge, Tipton's on my list
SPS. Small Penis Syndrome

I saw the "flop t" called in the 1970's at a small college game. The official was Dr. Leroy Fanning, a prof at UTChattoonga and a "friend" of mine. A player obviously flopped in the middle of the court with little, if any, contact. Dr. Fanning ran over, pointed at the player on the floor and blew the T. That is the ONLY time I have ever seen it called.
the one in our game...was really not that bad...the opposing player made contact with him (to the side), was it a charge? no...but deserving of a T was outrageous (and no I was not the player)

"Flop Tech" was a point of emphasis in high school basketball in the mid 1980's. Don't ask me why, but it was pushed at pre-season clinics. The ONLY (and I do mean ONLY) officials who ever called one are the guys who disappeared into oblivion. I am amazed by your story....Sad on top of sad...
I will never forget that watching that play happen... the kid who got the T was inconsolable for at least 20-30 minutes.

Wow! You're correct. I found an article from 1989 that the NYT wrote which cited Tipton's article.

That idiot wrote for the Huntington Herald Dispatch during the late 70's and came to UK in 1981, I believe. He has had a chip on his shoulder since day one. Almost every game, a fan would make a comment to him, about his negativity. He seems to enjoy the notoriety.
Huntington, West Virginia?

The rule fell under "unsportsmanlike conduct".
That seemed silly to me because the same could be said for shoving to get a rebound. Gaining an advantage is part of the game.

On the bright side, Cal taks jabs at him every so often. He isn't as smart as some think because he sometimes takes the bait and Cal makes him look stupid. I love the video of Cal talking about the little dogs yapping and Tipton steps right in it. I don't know if the video is still available but it is hysterical if you can find it.

Cal does make him look stupid, but let's be realistic, it doesn't take much.

He's playing a gimmick like a wrestling heel.

If some of you yokels wouldn't give him the "heat" he craves, he might shrivel up and go away.

He's been there almost 40 years. I don't think anything fans do is going to change him staying on staff until he's dead.

now that you say that, I do remember the ref actually calling it that and our coach just going apesh*t...

Yea, I've always wondered what joy or satisfaction that he derives from covering a team & program that he clearly detests. Never made sense to me.

Yes, I remember that. People at UK were furious about both articles. There was concern that UK might cave and withdraw the offer to Pitino after they appeared. Tipton thought he had another scalp. Thank God CM Newton had more sense than he thought. The whole thing blew over quickly once Newton made it clear he was sticking with Pitino.

He's taken the same angle for those 40 years.

My dad fell for it when I was a kid and called Tipton to cuss him over something during the probation days. Dad said the madder he got, the more pleasure Tipton seemed to take out of it. Very strange. Our family has been ignoring him since then.

As Megablue said, he's playing the heel. It sells papers and gets people talking (this thread to wit). Not sure why people don't understand this.

To be honest, I could care less what the man writes or says about UK - it is as irrelevant as he is. No one of any worth reads the LHL anyway, and the people who actually do seems to be falling off at a fairly increasing rate. Tipton is a very respected sports journalist in those circles, but sports journalists who write for printed newspapers are becoming about as common as Bigfoot sightings. Eventually, there won't be any more of them left, because people will quit reading their news on newsprint and start getting their news like the rest of the world, online. That's when the locally-based, bias-fueled hit pieces from the Jerry Tipton's of the world will cease. Until then, just don't read them.
Weird Al has something to say about I could care less.

Lonely Island has a song called I Just Had Sex.
Jerry Tipton has never sang that song.
