With all of this nil crap, how will uk be competitive?
Every good player will now be a free agent and go to the highest bidder. Does uk have that kind of $? Granted, I don't understand how nil works, but how will compete in the land of free agency?

If our fan base wants to win, they'll cough up the nil. It's really that simple.

I said long-term NIL was going to be horrible for UK. How long can Bob’s HVAC etc keep contributing to NIL because let’s be honest what are these businesses really getting out of this? UK has far fewer Kraft type donors than so many other universities.

So ultimately the big shoe companies/athletic wear companies are going to be financing the big NIL and they are going to push these kids to bigger markets for visibility. It happens in all major professional sports and will eventually flush out that way in college if changes are not made.

Just my opinion.

So do you think that Durham, North Carolina is a big market? How about Lawrence, Kansas? Chapel Hill, North Carolina?

I think your logic is flawed. If the shoe companies get involved, they're going to push kids to the elite blue blood schools. They're not going to push them to St. John's or DePaul simply because they're located in the huge city that doesn't care about them.

It's such a tired counter to the nil dilemma.

I also mentioned the number of big money donors. I can assure you UK is not heading up that list. Is KU doubtful. UNC probably more.

Assuming things remain the same and will always do so is flawed logic in my opinion. Things are changing very rapidly and the revenue share is the next issue for Universities. In 20 years, without controls put in, we won’t recognize college athletics.

The schools no matter where they are located with more boosters and donors who have deep pockets can buy what they want when they want. That doesn’t mean they will year in and out but the more fans you have with money the better chance you have to get the $ needed to buy the players.

If Ivy League alumni ever get serious about basketball, perhaps relaxing the academic component, few schools could compete with them for players.

I have thought about this some the last 2 weeks. Kentucky first mantra by pope can work sometimes but the reality is pope and Kentucky will have to spend money to get a good player or players. You can’t say no to every good player because they cost to much. You want a good player, you gotta spend money. Kentucky doesn’t have an alpha guy on this roster, and it’s clear as day.

Let's all calm down. NIL wasn't the problem today or this week.

RE: Caleb Wilson. There's a screen shot from the Trilly Donovan discord going around that says we actually offered more NIL and Caleb still chose UNC. Even if it's not true, we have to be smart with how we use the $ we d have. Yes, we have to be willing to pay for elite players. But you have to be able to identify who is actually worth their asking price. I'm not convinced a freshmen Caleb Wilson is better than what we'll see in the portal. So if he's wanting some absurd number, I'd really rather see what's available in the portal before committing 2 million, 4 million, whatever to a freshmen.

RE: Vanderbilt: Let's get the obvious thing out of the way. We're missing Carr. Despite his defensive problems, he's a good offensive player. We're missing our backup PG. Our starting PG seems to be banged up. He's definitely not playing like himself. We still should have won the game. We were up 7 and looked like we were about to blow them out. Then the guys crapped the bed.

While it's a nice thought that "Yeah, if we had more NIL, we'd have a better team." I think Pope got everyone he could. I don't think NIL held us back. I think timing held us back. Pope had to rush to piece this roster together.

Obviously Pope gets a pass this year. He started with 0 players as the snake oil salesman took them all with him. All the players that had new recruited with UK money. He had two weeks to fill a roster. The next 2 years will tell the tale. Also you cannot hold a couch accountable when 2 valuable pieces of your team are unavailable.

My personal opinion is Kentucky should consider going independent in basketball and follow the ND football model (ACC basketball, Independent w ACC affiliation football).

We are the biggest brand in college basketball. It’s time we capitalize on it

Get your own TV deal with Fox or CBS etc. keep all that money. Keep all the payout money for our tournament appearances etc….still get a cut of SEC football money.

Also allows us to play a balanced schedule to our liking while playing made for TV matchups with all the bluebloods. Kansas, UNC, Duke, Indiana, etc. then select the SEC teams you want for rivalry reasons or historic reasons. And pad the rest w good midmajors. Basically have a better version of what Gonzaga’s schedule is. Instead of low mid majors you get the 50-100 teams for the non marquee matchups

I think the staff got misled big time in the Wilson recruitment they put all their eggs in one basket. I hope they will make the appropriate adjustments and learn from this recruiting mistake because they were other players they could’ve possibly landed.

You raise an interesting point and I wonder if any schools are thinking of this too considering that Notre Dame just pocketed all of their playoff money and didn't have to share it. However, could we really stay in the SEC if we pulled out for basketball? Football is what is driving everything, not basketball, so I don't know if that would financially work for us going forward.

I’ve said it for a few years. We are toast

Mississippi is one of the poorest states in this country.

Go look at how much Ole Miss has in their NIL war chest.

The money is there in the Commonwealth. The problem is the people with it don’t really care about college athletics or UK.

The richest person in the state of Kentucky is worth almost 10 billion dollars and is a USC grad. Her and her father have given almost 600 million dollars to USC over the years.

That’s the problem right there.

Losing Adou hurt the most. Imagine having his aggression and tenacity, crashing the boards, throwing down putback slams, driving and actually finishing with contact, etc.

We have top 5 NIL budget. Why should we be toast.

This year, is long term assumption free, I agree. My point is for upcoming rosters, they can’t have this belief that because players want money they will turn them away. If you want to win you need good players. Good players cost money, Kentucky is gonna have to pay up to get good players.

Earlier this week I was the opposite of this, but after thinking about more, good players cost money, and you gotta be willing to meet them with the demands sometimes
I think NIL needs to go away, and the NCAA needs to pool money and divy it out to players by ranking or something. That would remove the situation of schools dominating because they bought players. The NCAA doesn't technically have to play along with NIL. It can easily say "pay for collegiate athletes comes from funding controlled by the NCAA". If incoming players don't want to get paid that way, they can find some other way to play basketball.

Which would invite a lawsuit from big donors at a rando school that the courts would quickly side with. Nothing in the courts rulings to this point have suggested that the NCAA can put any impediments on a players ability to earn money.

here here ! I nominate this post as post of the week !

And I like the discussion as well. These are some questions that's been mulling around in my mind this year.' So I'm learning reading up on what everyone feels and thinks about it all. I didn;'t know some of this stuff.

I personally think that we ill be fine. Kentucky has enough money donors that can keep us in good shape relative to most all other programs. I also feel really strongly that we have the PERFECT coach for this era to really take off and keep us at the top. of the sport.

To my thinking, the portal, and how it is utilized, will be a main driving factor for ALL teams success in this era. Strike it lucky and get a great team, but that's no guarantee for sure fire success.

The playing field is ULTRA level nowadays. The difference will be in how good of a coach you have (along with everything that entails, not just X's and O's) getting the right fit and player for the program thru the portal, having enough money to entice these young men to come to play - but more importantly for us, is the coach that understands it takes a special kind of player that has guts, integrity, will and a desire to overachieve to WIN here, at Kentucky.

Because we're the bluest of blue blooded programs and are gonna get the best shot from every team every single night.

Just a fact of life for any Kentucky team.

There has to be a way. As much as I wish it would happen, I don't think the schools will collectively say "we're not paying players to play here". Where is the NBA in all of this? I know they don't give a hoot about college basketball (we're just a bootcamp for their draft picks), but do they not realize that if the college game gets decimated because of this, they'll have to sign kids out of high school, put them in the G League or go overseas to get players?
