good travel fans, good home crowd, middle pack team that you can count on to get the occasional upset win but generally a strong opponent that isn't a threat to a national championship run.

To me that is the ideal team to have in your conference

It makes sense in theory, because football is the thing that has caused this complete breakdown of the traditional conference structure.

But it’s a little late to be suggesting now. That ship has already sailed.

Yep, I agree on both points. It does sound to me like a good idea. Football alignments are the problem and all the money involved. It would be nice to keep the old conferences for other sports. But I agree that ship has sailed. I'd say it's too little, too late.
