Uk makes it of course, then Duke, Maryland, Uconn, and Providence. Duke is his dream school, but Cal has a on campus visit to UK on 9/25-27. 2 days with Cal, enough said.

He never said duke was his dream school. He has said he grew up rooting for and liking duke but he would make his decision based on what's the best situation for him.

He's already been to uconn multiple times for unofficial visits and had played against current players in pick up games. Uconn been on him the longest and offered him long ago. He also has a good relationship with Ollie.

It will be interesting to see how much academic come into play as he has mentioned academics are important. Duke scares me the most

Wow - surprised to see Kansas didn't make the cut. Thought they would be our biggest competition after Duke. UNC out too.

Thought he was an Adidas kid too, but apparently that's not going to be a big factor.

Good to see Gabriel, despite many summer offers, quickly cutting his list down and scheduling the visit to Lexington.

Well, if he's looking at the best situation for him, it sounds more like a Kentucky vs Duke battle. I never pay much attention to the having a great relationship with said coach. We hear that same crap with every recruit we're on from whatever the school that poster cheers for and in the end, it doesn't matter. I bet if asked about every coach recruiting this kid, he would say he has a great relationship with every single one of them. Uconn is cool by me. I like their coach. I think he will be a great coach someday, but if i had to bet money, today i would go with Cal or K.

Duke has Jayson Tatum locked up as their SF which is the position Gabriel would like to play. They are also the heavy favorites for Giles at PF which is a position Gabriel would otherwise fit the best.

So the "best situation" might win out over favorite school growing up... at least I hope it will. Frankly, I think this kid fits best as a college PF, if he is dead set on being a SF then we might have to make a decision between him or Bridges. And I would rather just take both.

Pretty telling when the majority of these races for elite recruits keep coming down to UK and Duke. Tells you a lot about how far ahead both programs are compared with the rest of the field.

They're absolutely a tier above the rest, especially with regards to recruiting and overall stature of the programs.

I'm just curious about Gabriel vs. SKJ - which player is better, and are they vying for the same position or can they co-exist on the roster?

Both are fast risers over the Summer, so I'm not sure who is going to end up being rated higher.

Duke is going to be absolutely loaded if they get everyone they are suppose to get.

I wonder if Coach K platoons, sends some of the returning players packing, or leaves a bunch of 5-stars on the bench?

My (completely unqualified) guess is that Gabriel will be ranked higher. He seems to be getting the most buzz from the recruiting guru types. I don't know if anyone on here has actually watched either play. If they have that would great to get their insight.

I think they are similar players although Gabriel fancies himself more of a perimeter player.

As it stands, I believe we have the last official visit. I'm quite hopeful he picks Duke.

I'm hearing UConn will get the last Official Visit. If he commits somewhere before then that it doesn't really matter but if he hasn't committed elsewhere that bodes well for UConn

If so, there will be lots of negative recruiting against them and they'll strike out the following spring. Until they get an international top 10 player to reclassify at the last minute of course.

Yeah, then ESPN and the national media can praise him as a visionary for "adapting" to the platoon system. When Calipari has a team full of one and dones and McDonald's All American caliber players coming off the bench, unselfishly sacrificing their minutes for the good of the team, they're "Everything that is wrong with college sports." But when Coach K does it, he's painted as a genius.

Just for fun... Could you find a single example of any major media source saying that platooning was everything that was wrong with college sports?

I think you've mixed up your media outrages;)

Maybe, but as far as the visits he's scheduled at the moment, Duke has the last one now.

OFFICIAL VISIT DATES
Maryland: 9/4 - 9/6
Kentucky: 9/25 - 9/27
Duke: 10/16 - 10/18

Providence and UCONN are tbd

I find it amusing that Coach K is already getting disparaged for something that hasn't even happened and is very well likely not to happen. Carry on.

Duke is going after Gabriel even though they originally had no intention of recruiting another PF this year - but he's just too good to turn down. He's a kid they can keep in their back pocket next year who could be a monster by his sophomore year. Kind of like Allen this year.

They're going to have to convince him however that there is PT for him in the frontcourt with Tatum, Giles, and Bolden - who they are also recruiting.

Former McDAA Jeter by the way has apparently inherited the career bench player role before ever stepping on campus. They're recruiting over him this year with Bolden Giles, and Gabriel, and next year with Bamba and Carter. I predict he transfers after his sophomore year. Not sure Kennard will ever start either if he doesn't this year.

Amusing to me that when Kennard committed to Duke, there were implications that UK's OAD system was a factor and Kennard was afraid he'd be recruited over, and yet he's walked right into the middle of it at Duke.

LOL we will be the only team more loaded then as we are bringing in 6-7 of the top 35 along with Tai , Humphries , Mulder , Matthews , Hawkins and Willis . at squad of

Fox or Simmons/ Hawkins
Monk/Alkins./Mulder
Bridges/Matthews
SKJ/Tai/Willis
Ayton or Bolden / Humphries

is a LOADED roster and its not that far fetched .

Would definitely be a loaded roster. Will be interesting to see where all of these elite players land, in particular Ayton and Bolden for me.

Watched Gabriel last week at the Big Strick Classic, where Josh Jackson scored 50 pts, and during warmups he was stroking threes. For a guy that is 6-10, he can fill it up from behind the arc. Cal is recruiting him as a wing and would be a great addition if we don't get Bridges.

Cal is going to try to sell him on playing 3/4 in the frontcourt with Miles Bridges. Bridges would be an excellent complementary player to Gabriel and vice versa.

Gabriel would probably start at UK. He will not start at Duke if they add Giles and Bolden, and Giles and Tatum are elite talents that should be playing 38 mpg, so frontcourt minutes will be scarce. Jeter is already looking to be lost in the shuffle.

Choice is to come to UK, play one year and be a lottery pick, or go to Duke and either get drafted late in first round after first year based on potential, or stay a second year to move into lottery. It's really as simple as that.

Suspect he'll chose Duke regardless. Duke is bringing him in for their version of BBM, and I'm sure they'll have the nerd herd there out in force chanting his name.

Duke is suppose to add Giles, F.Jackson, Bolden, and Gabriel to go along with Tatum.

They are expected to return Jones, Allen, Thornton, Kennard, Jeter, and Obi.

G Thornton/Jackson
G Allen/Kennard
G/F Tatum/Jones
F Giles/Gabriel
C Bolden/Jeter/Obi

How in the heck does K cut down to his traditional 7 man rotation with that roster?

Thornton and Jackson have to get minutes in the backcourt. Giles and Tatum will get minutes up front.

Allen and Jones are the veterans and title winners. Got to give them minutes.

They will need one more guy inside. Will it be Bolden, Gabriel, or Jeter?

Two of those guys are going to sit the bench with Kennard and Obi for sure.

It will be interesting to see who ends up leaving after that season as another "couldn't cut it at Duke" player who was overhyped.

I think most people (UK fans anyway) are expecting Jeter to flame out. He wasn't that impressive in the All-Star games and K is already recruiting over him. He might stick it out though and be another Kelly/Plumlee/Zoubek. Who knows?

I'd say it's Duke hedging their bets just in case Giles changes his mind by chance . Of course I'm sure they would like to have all three but it's a standard tactic that all schools use , for example UK is after Simmons , Fox and Smith . I get a Uconn vibe on this one , they seem to get every African born player .

Duke has Jayson Tatum locked up as their SF which is the position Gabriel would like to play. They are also the heavy favorites for Giles at PF which is a position Gabriel would otherwise fit the best.

Oh Gossie21 your like me a hoarder !!!

Even if it means no Giles?

Jeter- Obi
Giles
Tatum - Jones

Where's the roof for Gabriel?

This is what the Dukies are gunning for:

Frontcourt

Tatum- starts at the 3.
Gabriel- starts at the 4.
Giles- starts at the 5.
Bolden- reserve inside.
Jeter- bench.
Obi- bench.

Backcourt

Thornton- starts at the1.
Allen- starts at the 2.
F.Jackson- reserve at the 1.
Jones- reserve at the 2 and 3.
Kennard- bench.

Sounds great unless you are a 5-star player or a high D-1 transfer buried at the end of the bench (Jeter, Kennard, and Obi).

Could hurt recruiting the next season when other coaches point out that 5-stars do not necessarily play for Coach K and you could be recruited over quickly.

In that scenario, Bolden would be buried deep on the bench as well because there's no way Giles, Gabriel, and Tatum play less than 30 minutes/game. I could see Giles playing closer to 35 minutes/game, which would leave K with the option of occasionally moving Giles to the 4 spot in favor of Bolden - and at the expense of Gabriel - or keeping Giles at the 5 in favor of Gabriel and at the expense of Bolden.

Tough sell, and as you noted, could potentially hurt their recruiting.

If Duke gets all them players K will think he is coaching the Olympic team. Hope and pray Giles does not go to Duke, he is a beast will dominate from day 1.

G F.Jackson
F Tatum
F Gabriel
F Giles
C Bolden

That's a monster class.

K likes to plays 7 guys. Thornton, Allen, and Jones are going to be returning starters. Pencil them into the rotation.

Jeter is out of luck with all that talented size coming in. Kennard better hope that Allen and Jones jump to the pros or he won't see the light of day. Obi should transfer again.

That leaves 4 of the 5 Freshmen to round out the rotation. Giles, Tatum, and Jackson are locks to play. Gabriel and Bolden will fight for minutes.

I really think Bolden and/or Gabriel end up somewhere else, especially if Jeter plays well this season.

Still they will be extremely talented:

Starters
G Thornton
G Allen
G Jones
F Tatum
F Giles

Reserves
G Jackson
C Jeter
G Kennard
