Wenyen Gabriel Boxing

He does look bigger. Glad to see he's doin something to toughen him up too. I've always said I think Cal needs to enroll his guys in kickboxing or MMA to toughen them up. If he's gonna rely on primarily freshmen then this game is a whole lot more physical than the one they're used too. Good to see Wenyan taking it upon himself to know his physicality was a weakness last year and doin something about it. I think he turns into the leader of this team.

I still think the best way to get better at basketball is to you know, play basketball. With that being said, I wouldn't wanna fight a dude with that kind of reach.

Think there are 2 people in that vid. WG was 1st and 3rd clip. Dude in white shirt wasn't him, IMO.

Great comment, dummy. Basketball is not the end all. We all have other interest in life. I like to play Poo Mah in my spare time.

never boxed in my life but i can see how it could help with hand eye coordination and balance. two things WG needs to improve.

Those are two huge factors.

Also its a great way to test your aerobic capacity which can breed mental toughness. And awesome builder of confidence. Start landing a couple fresh crisp combos and a young man's confidence will go up without a doubt.

He certainly is an imposing presence with his sheer length.

Glad to see him grinding, I think he's in for a nice jump this season.

I think its a great idea and im glad hes doing it.

That being said, hes just as awkward with his punches as he is on the court. If anything helps hin tighten up that newborn deer coordination, ill be stoked. His arms definitely look bigger.

Footwork, footwork, footwork. Boxing is crazy footwork intensive if you're actually training and not just hitting a heavy bag for cardio.

I don't think a lot of people realize but other than Miles Bridges, Wenyan is the highest rated recruit returning from this freshman class. He adds 15 pounds and we may be talking about him like people are talking about Bridges.

From what I can tell, couple reasons he looks stiff. Resistance bands are tied to his arms, and with him trying to punch with those bands around his biceps, it's gonna tighten up your shoulders, especially as you get fatigued. And the bigger thing is technique. It takes a LONG time to get proper technique with punching mechanics, in MMA and boxing.

But you're right, this type of training most definitely tightens up your coordination. I think part of the reason he looked awkward throughout the year is because he's still growing into his body.

Pretty sure that's Dhalsim from Street Fighter. That has to be like a triple digit reach haha.

You are right, there are 2 people. If you look to the left when the guy in the white is going, WG is sitting on a bench watching. When WG is going the guy in the white is sitting on the same bench.

WG does look like he has put on some strength and mass though, wish he started as big as the guy in the white, he would be a monster.

You're absolutely right, I did not see those bands when I originally watched the video on my phone. My mistake. But yes, I think this is definitely something that can tighten up his reaction time and help his overall movement. If nothing else, it'll give him a different way of building strength and explosion in his arms to help root people out for rebounds or something. And absolutely he's awkward because of his body not being fully mature. I don't think he'll ever be what I would consider fluid. Guys like Davis and WCS are freaks. But if he can fill out another 10 or 15 pounds, it'll go a long way for him being a garbage man inside for points and boards who can pop the occasional 3.

I worked out in the past at a gym that former Champ Michael Moorer had a boxing rink and equipment installed. They gave some brief free lesson which I did. What Wenyen is doing is building up arm strength in those exercises. Trust me about 2 minutes of what he is doing with the upper cuts and arm bands will absolutely kill you. Where it looks like he is not punching hard burns your arms and it is very hard to do. Those activities really build those muscles and at his age if he continues, his upper body strength will really improve. But, maybe if we end up playing Duke he can take care of Mr. Tripper when he pulls a stunt.

That's easy. He's swinging but the other guys isn't swinging back.. Basketball doesn't work that way. Will be interesting to see how he responds (as well as SKJ) when the opponent hits them back.
