Well...disappointed, frankly.

Liam Coen is not the only OC in the world. We'll be OK. I did really enjoy his offense and what he meant to us as a program and a team playing its way to a ten-win season.

However, on the heels of my very wrong prediction to friends that he would stay at least to finish out with Will Levis, he went the opposite direction from what I thought he would do. That's disappointing.

Being a fan of any sport in 2022 means that it takes some thick skin to be entertained and to enjoy who you root for because of the--using a Cal-ism--"clutter" with which one has to deal. Nowadays, players and coaches alike come and go...no grass growing under those feet. There's lots of clutter for all of us who like sports, both watching and playing like I do. That comes with the turf, but this is another decision with Coen that leaves me shaking my head, wondering why and how this kind of thing can happen, and to see it done so regularly and so cavalierly is so indicative of the way things are now and will be in the future.

Every man for himself! It's like we're all on the Titanic and scurrying like rats to find a way to jump off the ship we happen to be on at the time. Can't anyone just be happy where they are any more and think just a second about some of those they directly affect by either staying or leaving?

I do appreciate what the man (another case of "I hardly know the guy") did for us in his one lone year of wearing Kentucky gear...gear that is likely already on its way to your local Goodwill. But, I would love to see this kind of scenario work out in our (the players') favor just once. It would be downright refreshing to see someone with a selfless attitude who might fully be engaged for a more long-term commitment than to see someone who is more fully engaged in managing how fast they can rise within their own career. I know, coaching, many of you will remind me, is a nomadic career, that this is to be expected and anticipated, that he must take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I say opportunities abound. If you're good, they will find you. Doors open for the best to walk right in. There's no guarantee he will find his coaching Nirvana in LA with the Rams, but one thing is now for sure--he's leaving our kids and our school, and he will not be finding it here.

It is very disappointing as a fan who wants to see UK succeed on the field more than anything...thats why we are all here. Im not happy about it but do understand it. Besides, who knows what his coaching goals are. he may be focused on a NFL career and coming to UK was his chance to call plays at a high level and it just happened to work out that the Rams got Stafford and win a Super Bowl after he leaves...basically making the OC a shoe-in for a NFL HC job.

He is a rising star and has the chance to put himself in a HC pretty soon. Matt Jones mentioned that Coen told the team last week this was the one job that he would accept and turned down OC jobs from 3 other P5 schools and the Saints.

Now, I do think your points are well stated when it comes to the other position coaches in recent years searching for greener pastures. Some of those are disappointing and even Marrow said a couple have called him after a year saying they made a mistake. And give credit to Brad White who was offered "better" jobs and NFL positions and has stayed where he is.

1. He is a NFL OC....he was a college OC.
2. It's the reigning super bowl champs....Cooper Cupp, Robert Woods, Stafford and a talented young RB.
3. He re-unites with a guy that taught him most of his offensive ideas in McVay....
4. He has lived way more in LA than he has Lexington.
5. He turned down a NFL gig with Saints as OC already...and multiple other college interests
6. He faced the team before weekend and told them face to face....not like Eric Wolford who just left w/o even saying goodbye to his OL room
7. He apparently has given Stoops some of the current names showing up of interest. (i.e. he shared a short list of dudes that meet Stoops future ideology).

This maybe the one job that he'd leave UK for...and it just happened to open up. The guy has been up front, nice dude, etc...it stinks for us but a good guy got a great opportunity. I'm just happy for him and his fiance/baby.

Here's my take, FWIW. I hate that Coen's leaving, but I trust the staff to find somebody that will provide some sense of continuity with the system.

That being said, our biggest competition for the top spot in the SEC east are also facing changes. Georgia is replacing their DC and lost a number of defensive players, and their OLine coach just stepped down as well. Florida replaced their whole staff. So it's not the end of the world. Both of those teams will be facing some staff changes. I think we have the talent in place to compete at a high level next year.

And no recruiting.

Yep. I think the reuniting part at a higher level was the main thing for him. I agree that it also puts him in position to possibly head coach as well some day but I'm not one that thinks it automatically does at all.
Again he's kind of coming in later on the Rams success train and the "He coached with McVey" thing has a shelf life too like anything else. Especially if they underperform next year from what they've have before.

But I agree totally with the fact he could not have been nicer and more all in the short time he was here and cant help to root for him.

The talent gap to Georgia makes beating them really difficult - and losing to them is like 2 losses because of the tiebreak. If we can take care of business against the teams on our schedule with similar talent - the Tennessees, Floridas, Mizzous of the world - we should be right back battling for 2nd in the East. We have what looks like 4 guaranteed wins, 2 that will be likely losses, and a bunch of coin flips. Winning all those coin flips is really hard to do. I think our record last year was about what we were. Sure, we could have beaten Tennessee and/or Miss State, but we also could have lost to Mizzou or USC or Florida. The next step is to continue amassing top classes. That's the difference between UGA/Bama/OSU/etc and the next tier of 15-20 schools. Talent.

The McVey tree isn't losing its luster anytime soon. Even if the Rams struggle there are already enough success stories (Packers, Bengals) from the pipeline to ensure that owners will continue to look at him. In comparison, McVey already has produced more high-end winners than Belicheck did in his career.

Same way I feel about it, and well put.

Dude, no coach in their right mind would have turned that down. He passed on the Saints, Miami (U), and maybe other opportunities to stay. Trying to put myself into Stoops or Levis's shoes, I would tell him to go kick ass. They're the reigning Super Bowl champs. This isn't a lateral move or leaving for a more prestigious school.

We should all be happy for him.

As far as being selfless, let's consider how we would feel if he came in and was terrible. We wouldn't want to keep him around out of loyalty. We would want his ass out of here.

NFL >>>> college. No recruiting and it’s the top of the sport . And an opportunity to go back to the Rams and essentially be a shoe in for a NFL head coaching position was too hard to pass. Can’t blame Coen at all
NFL is nowhere compared to college as far as I am concerned, and this is one reason why. You get a favorite player and then he is gone for a better opportunity.

I would’ve taken the job without any hesitation. Zero thought required. An NFL offensive coordinator job is a dream and a shoe in for a head coaching gig somewhere eventually.

College athletics is a dumpster fire right now with the portal and the NIL stuff. I would not want to deal with that. The NFL> NCAAF

NFL guys don’t change teams like NBA players. At most you’re getting a college guy four years. Are you saying NFL stars don’t stick around that long?

How often do you see a star QB bounce in the NFL?

Liam is a smart dude. That’s why he chose the better move for his career. Short-term he’s probably going to make less money, but he’s betting on himself to do well & advance his career. That’s the confidence of a head coach (which is what he will be in the not too distant future).
Also, (reported by KSR this morning), he’s part of the search and interview process for finding his replacement. He doesn’t have to do that. Respect for him-he’s been a great OC & a class act. Hope he stays a fan of #BBN & I hope to see him come back (either to visit or to coach) in the future.

That says a lot about him. He’s helping with finding his replacement before he leaves

If you really want an OC to stay here for many years and be loyal to the program, I hear that Gran is available.

Anyone who complains about what Liam Coen has done here at UK and also taking a better job opportunity are just playing the victim.

We are in a much better place as a program after Liam Coen than we were before Liam Coen. And I appreciate that and the one year he gave us that showed us (and CMS) that we can run and pass the football and win games in the SEC.

We are one small step away from winning the SEC East, and when we get there, we are good enough to win a NC in football. And Liam Coen has helped us in taking that next step. God speed Liam. I hope you will be a Wildcat again in the future.

There is more stability with NFL rosters than college. At least in the NFL you know what someone's contract term, etc looks like and have some ability to assess and plan. College is year to year on every player.

He'll be a head coach the following season. You can practically take it to the bank.

Never, because I don't watch the NFL, LOL.

I agree completely and thank him for leaving us in a better place than where we were than when he got here. I am an older man. It is kind of like watching your children grow and do well to me. Go do even better coach Coen. I’m rooting for you. Thanks for helping us be better.

You mean like Levis? Or Wandale? Or any of the other transfers we took?

Overall I don't think it evens the playing field, Bama is much more likely to take our four star that plays like a five star than we are to take their five star that is playing like a four star. Not too long ago there was a wall street analysis that valued Bama;s football program at about a billion dollars and UK;s at about 300 million.

And stealing talent is now rampant at the high school level.
