What are J.J.'s numbers so far through the first three games? Does he have a sack? Have they been turning him loose on 3rd down? I was at the game on Saturday and I didn't see him in too many plays.

12 total tackles (8 solo). 1 sack. 1 PD
Very pedestrian so far. Really would kick it up a little if JJ can give us that little bit off the edge.... not asking for alot just a little.

Thankfully for the first time in mark stoops tenure I can look at the.recruiting class and see our edge woes dwindling.

As his numbers would suggest, JJ has been just 'ok'. From what I've seen in the first 3 games, other teams don't appear to be scheming around him like they did Josh Allen. He's just another guy on the edge who may or may not apply any pressure on any given play. Seems like he's doing his job on the running game and setting the edge but is no where near the disruptive presence I thought he'd be by this point in his career.

Maybe he'll turn it up a notch in SEC play but, personally, I sort of doubt it.

Do you guys think its just the scheme? When Josh Allen was here he always rushed the passer. JJ seems to be dropped into coverage a lot.

Nope...Josh dropped in coverage at times.

Jordan Wright, Weaver now...just aren't great pass rushers....sort of mediocre to below average.

Hope Wade, Fearby, Noah Matthews, and the new recruits will get us back to respectable edge rush.

I don't think it's scheme. When you break down game film, it looks like Weaver doesn't have an "it factor" to shed blocks and get to the QB. That can be technique, strength, or instincts. When he does get to the backfield, he often misses the tackle. Disruptive, but without the finish. The best pass rushers don't get to the QB every play, but they make it count more often than not when they do.

Van Hiles' breakdowns show it a lot. Van doesn't harp on Weaver, but it's plain as day that the guy has had opportunities. Could be a focus issue that gets remedied in SEC play. Here's hoping. 🍻

Most OL's so far have been scheming to double team Deone Walker. JJ has been doing his job, and others have been getting the benefits of it. Our MLB is leading the SEC in sacks. That doesn't happen if the guys in front of him (or to his sides) aren't doing their job.

Was just thinking the other day that as much as we've been a little "underwhelmed" so far with the team as a whole part of that feeling is because we haven't got much from the biggest names yet on both sides.

On offense we're still waiting for Brown and Key to get going and on defense guys like Weaver, Walker and Jordan Lovett haven't shown out yet. Understand Walker is being double teamed every play and drawing attention so I give him a pass.

But the other 4 guys I considered 4 of our best players coming in so in a way that makes me optimistic better days are ahead cause they will turn it on soon.

I know he did get into pass coverage, like the play at Florida, saving a td pass. But when the team needed a pass rush Allen was pinning his ears back.

Weaver is a nice player with good size. But he doesnt have the “fast twitch” explosiveness to be a top notch pass rusher .

Allen dropped back into coverage more than just rare...most times we line him at LOS and heavy blitz opposite side.

But regardless...>JJ's lack of sacks isn't scheme at all. It's simply he ain't a good edge rusher is why.

We got four seasons (will have five full seasons in nine more games) of data on Weaver. His best season was two years ago with 6 sacks and 10 TFL. He just is who he is. Which is an above average SEC player, and there's no shame in that, but he's not the level of NFL player people project onto him. He's similar Boogie Watson who himself was a multi-year SEC starter.

Totally jmo but I think weaver just doesn't love college football. I think that's why we saw every year him flirting with leaving for another place. He would've left for the NFL if he had enough positive feedback.

Totally jmo

The double (and triple teams) Walker is absorbing have opened massive rush lanes on both sides of the “scrum” created by Walker’s presence.

I saw us twist Walker into the Nose’s slot during the EKU game, and three met him after his twist.

This much is obvious: the Coaches of our opponents to date have likely told their team that Key, Brown and Walker will not beat “us,” and have schemed to limit the obvious stars.

Yes.

And let’s be honest: we watch for a return of Josh Allen’s senior stats from every edge. And in doing so, we are projecting an image of the most decorated player in UK program history. His 18 sacks in 2019 dwarf most annual leaders in sacks in the SEC, typically 8 to 12 sacks do the trick. You have to meander back to Derrick Thomas at Bama in the late 80’s to find truly comparable numbers.

JJ might make some All-conference teams should he turn it up a notch.

He’s a very good player.

I don't think hardly any will touch Josh Allen's 18 sacks season....and I don't hold the next generation to his standard.

But to morph into a bit better than Boogie Watson-ish would be nice....JJ had 3 sacks last year and 1 vs. 3 scrubs so far. JJ isn't bad but guys like Key, Brown, Burton get some called out....JJ is playing as 'meh' IMO.

I've seen Weaver do his job and set the edge and watched Wallace get the sack because all of the linemen were doing their job: Walker pushing his blocker back into the quarterback and both DT and DE squeezing the pocket but maintaining contain. One time Weaver went for the sack and lost contain and the quarter back squirted past and got a first down going past Weaver on the outside. That first down was on Weaver because he lost contain. I'd rather see them collapse the pocket and let Wallace get the sack. We have had issues with mobile quarterbacks when we just go after him and forget contain.

Oh I agree totally! I just think the schemes don’t put him in the position to show all of his skills.
