Look, I know everyone has there eye on the portal for the next great QB……. I get it, the QB is the leader and captain of the offense. But the 0ffensive linemen are his horsemen. 5 offensive linemen make up almost 50 percent of a offense. Although people know and talk about the OLine and it’s importance , I just don’t think they understand how important They are. That is Especially true for a Mark Stoops coached team. Coach has made it very known that he wants to play ball control offense ( which I am totally good with). It’s not sexy, but you can win a lot of games that way. Michigan is doing it right now.

I watched and coached football my whole life, and like to think I understand the game better than most. The one certainty I have come up with………. Is the game of football is more times than not, won at the line of scrimmage. That’s why guys like Deon Walker and Josh Allen are so important to those respective teams. The team that controls the line of scrimmage will have a the advantage. Look, Mark Stoops has alot of average too bad QB’s. Good QB’s are hard to find. But what he has had, is really good Offensive Lines. A good offensive line makes a offensive coordinator or a QB look good. Anyone can find the open receiver when the have time. DBs or Line backers can only guard someone so long. Almost all running backs can run through the holes when they are there. That’s why over time, the running back has become the most replaceable position in the NFL. Same goes for a defensive coordinator or defensive backs. When that Dline can win the line of scrimmage, and get pressure on the QB or stop the running game…… It makes it so much easier to guard a WR or stop the run game.

I know many people understand this. But for some people the game of football seems to begin and end with skill postion players. In my opinion, Deon Walker is hands down our most important freshman we need to hold on to. We get us a good offensive line next year, and we will have at least a solid QB situation by default. That’s just my opinion.

I'm not an ex coach or even player - but I fully agree with your assessment on the importance of what people used to call the "Big Uglies". For that matter I didn't think our backup QB looked bad when he was in - I think the offense looked bad. I also believe, and have no knowledge other than what is being said and I have read - is that the other Wade twin could be a great QB at Kentucky. But as Pigskin Cat is saying - it all begins and ends with the guys in front of the QB!

Go Big Blue!

I know I've said repeatedly on here that I don't like constant staff turnover and that putting the players through four position coaches in four years is tough on all levels. I hope the rumors are true about Coen, because there will be familiarity with a lot of the older players. I also hope that keeping Yenser is a sign the problem wasn't necessarily on him but on what the OC was dictating they have to do. Gotta give the benefit of the doubt somewhere and as of now it looks like Yenser is getting that. It's not like we lacked talent on the line most of those linemen were four star guys or otherwise pretty highly rated. Couple that with the fact we were relying on a lot of true freshman on the perimeter (WR's, TE's especially) that protection for Levis was going to be suspect. hopefully we see marked improvement with a better offensive scheme next year.

Agree on Walker.

OP i agree for the most part
games are won and lost in the trenches
but for a team to take that next step you need very good QB play along with the other skill positions

I agree with that, if the goal is to be a consistent top 5-10 team. I just don’t think that is realistic for Kentucky. My goal for the program would to be a consistent top 25 team, with being a top 10 team maybe every 4 years. For me, it’s hard to imagine anything better than that. I really think the lack of quality HS players in our state hurts us. The teams that are consistently in the top 5 or 10 , almost always have great in state recruiting talent (outside of ND). Football is unlike basketball, You need numbers. There is only, in my opinion maybe 10 or 15 good QBs out there each year. They are hard to come by. A lot of times, come from your home state. We need another Couch, Lorenzen, or Woodson to come along. To pull a good QB from another state is tough for Kentucky football . We just got lucky with Levis, That Penn State choose Clifford over Levis to be the starter. Levis committed to his home state out HS. In my opinion, our path to consistent success, is a great OLine (Because I think you can develop with good coaching)…… with a solid QB.
