We are shockingly bad on defense

We are what we are and will be the rest of the year. Very poor defensively. Going to have to put up probably 90 to win every night. And over come poor ft shooting. If we rebound better, like tonight, that will help.

Our Defensive efficiency tonight was decent , keeping a team to 45% and 30% from 3 is ok. what you goobers are not understanding is that more possessions a game from our offensive system just creates more shots . if we slowed it down and played Calipari Ball, our opponents would get far fewer shots and only scored like 75 pts or so
Exactly, it’s not hard to grasp. We score close to 100 when we play well every game. That’s awesome. If we rebound better snd get a little tighter on defense overall we will be amazing,

And you go watch friends đź‘Ť

Our adjusted offensive efficiency against Florida was 165.1 and it was 141.1 tonight. We aren't going to lose many games if we can do that all the time lol

I'm a bit concerned that the 48% and 50% from 3 vs UF and Miss St isn't sustainable LOL.

Maybe it will be tho haha.

You never know!

Maybe we shoot worse in one game, but turn it over 5 less times and snag another O reb or two when compared to our numbers tonight.

Shooting is variable as well as all the other factors.

Our first shot defense is not that bad. What’s killing us is not rebounding well enough. Giving up offensive rebounds, 2nd and 3rd attempts for the opponents. Butler played great defense on Hubbard. He lot is up last year. He was 5/16 from the field tonight. 3/11 from 3.

That’s what I see too. I don’t know what the numbers say. But to the eye our defense is not terrible.

We don’t defensive rebound well.

We give up far too many 2nd and 3rd shots.

Clean that up and our defense looks much better.

Our offense is elite. We don’t have to be a defensive stopper.

Just respectable on defense.

FWIW today was much better. Miss st only rebounded 25% of their misses. That’s great.

A far cry from the 41% UF pulled down vs us.

Actually the first shot defense isn’t great. They shot over 60% on twos. That’s a troubling trend that plagued us vs UF and OSU.

Problem is we aren’t quite respectable on defense yet.

Add t that:
- Miscommunications on rotations,
= bigs giving up based line on one on one action
=Amari lack of rebounding technique
- fouling the 3 pt shooter

However, this team is build to outscore opponents…. So , as long as the 3 pts are falling and the ball is moving to the open man , we have a chance to win more games,

Defense isn't great throughout the game but we have the ability to get stops on individual possessions when we need to. We clamped them down the last 2 minutes (particularly Butler forcing Hubbard to take an off-balanced shot when it was still a 3 point game)

Elite offensively all they have to do is get better on defense. They don’t have to be good either just average. Their problem will be playing a Miss St or Louisville type team while having an off night in the tournament. Good offensive teams that defend. When they shoot like they did against Florida, Louisville and Miss St they won’t get beat. They have an off night Georgia or Ohio St happen.

The OP is right they have no real interest in playing defense outside of Butler.

It is still a great win. Hard to play like that on the road.

I thought we showed a huge improvement last night on the defensive end but what I really like was how smart we played and we did not get rattled and we kept coming I LOVE THIS TEAM we are who we are 4 quad wins BIG TIME

And we are still bad on defense. Next.
They definitely played much better and with more energy last night than they did in the OSU and UGA games. We also out rebounded MSST - which was another area of concern.

We have the two best wins in sec so far #6 Florida and # 14 msu POPE GETS IT HUGE win in starkville damn we are good

Similar to last year early in the season when you are getting up and down the floor and your goal is to score early the opponent is going to have the ball in their hands a lot too. Teams can’t afford to take their time on offense with UK because we’re going to get right back down the floor and score. The good news is Pope isn’t going to put a plow on his offense a month from now.

And yes, if we have a cold night in the tournament, we’re going home but you can say that about every team. Every team has flaws and variables and if those variables happen in a one and done tournament you are probably going home. That’s why winning the tournament is really hard. But in year one of Mark Pope if you’re worried about winning the NCAA tournament, then you need to reevaluate your expectations.

The Cats need to work on defense and free throw shooting. 11-19 from the free throw line is not good especially when your guards are not consistent at the stripe.

Lots to work on - thankfully, they haven’t peaked yet. Need to keep working on good ball movement and tighten up defense as they progress through the schedule.

Congratulations on the road win against a ranked team, Cats. Keep improving…
