Was John Pelphrey retained by the Gators new coach?

Pelphrey is my all time fav Cat for the way he helped bring back the program with sheer determination and heart.

However, he has changed as he has aged and just doesnt seem to fit in at UK anymore.

I always wanted John at UK but I see him hooking up with Pitino before Cal hiring him. The thought of Phelpry at UL would be sickening. Please John NO

You have to be more than just once connected to the program to work as an assistant at any program. While Pelphry is a fan favorite, I don't think he fits in with Cal's system. There's a reason coaches hire guys familiar w/ their systems like Cal w/ Barbee

Florida fans appreciated what John Pelphrey did for our program over all those years (at least a decade, I think). I would not have minded if Pelphrey would have became the next UF coach and another chance (after the Arkansas failure) to become a successful head coach again. Pel would have kept the Donovan system in place and maybe even had better luck in salvaging our current class. However, our AD Foley decided to 'cut the umbilical cord' as it were and decided to go in an entirely different direction with Michael White. I appreciated Donovan's pick-n-roll offense with the 3-pt shooting; I'm just not sure if I will like White's dribble-drive' offense - it seems like it would be too much 'one-on-one' basketball rather than team ball.

But getting back to Pelphrey; hopefully, he will land on his feet somewhere or maybe even take a year off - I think UF is still paying some salary.

I would guess Donovan offered him an assistant job with the Thunder, and he declined because he didn't wanna coach in the NBA. Maybe some of the Gator fans can give some more information on that. I find it hard to believe that Billy didn't extend an offer, and would just leave him without a job after hiring him as an assistant twice during his tenure at Florida. He won't have any trouble finding another assistant job. He'll probably just sit back a year and take it easy. And I can guarantee you in a year or two Pitino will offer him a job on his staff. I would hope he wouldn't take it, but that his his coaching idol and hero. He even tries to talk like him. LOL.

Love to have that true blue passion and love of UK on our staff over a one and done Slice. I think John at UK sells this program from the heart!! Grab him Cal.

Georgia should find a spot on their bench for him. His recruiting ties would help them more than any other school in the conference. I'm sure one of those dozen Florida schools well pick him up.

I see no reason why UK should hire a guy just because he played at UK. Pel has to be the best available candidate for the job, and do not think he is.

10-15 years ago Pel was ranked by other college coaches as the #1 or #2 Assistant in all of College basketball. It was his recruiting. He is and was not much of an X's and O's guy. But he could recruit like a beast. But I think about the time they won 2 titles in a row Pel changed. He is not the hard hitting guy on the recruiting trail he was at one time. Personally I wish him the best in where ever he lands. Just not at UK. Cal has a monster he has built and it has to have the most hungry of all folks in there as his assistants. Its the one reason I don't want Barbee to have the job. Just not that dynamic of a recruiter.

Saw where he probably wouldn't be on the staff with Donovan at Okc. Maybe TV work? Or a small college? I hope he does well. Love to see the former players succeed.

SEC Network seems to be a landing spot for lots of former SEC players/coaches.

Hell he may just take a few years off and enjoy the family time and play some golf.

Yeah, I'm not that thrilled about Barbee either. That said, I'll take some stability at the position regardless though. That would be nice after losing Coach Antigua, and then Slice back to back seasons.

Nice thinly veiled jab at Cal's system. Or maybe you didn't mean it that way because I'm not assuming you're actually one of those immediate Cal haters in the Gator fanbase. But it does seem like one of those comments that you find from one of those nuttin but net idiots. We've done pretty well with the DDMO. I know Cal doesn't use it exclusively, but I have seen a ton of team ball.

And the fact is it attracts recruits. If the coach is worth a crap, he'll having them playing team ball within the DD system.

Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio has an opening for its Head Basketball Coach position.

I see where Steve Masiello is advertising on the internet for an assistant at Manhattan.

Would you expand on what "change" you feel has developed?

He changes the spelling of his name back to Pelphrey.

Bringing Pel onto the coaching staff is a MUST in my opinion, especially considering the opportunity available now that Billy D has left Gainesville. He's a UK legend, grew up in the state, is steeped in UK tradition and greatness, and is well known as a great recruiter and was a decent head coach in the SEC with some big wins over ranked opponents. I am hoping and praying that Cal reaches out to Pel and offers him the job.

No to Pel

Yes to the best candidate out there, which would also eliminate Barbee

What makes you so sure Pel would even take the job if offered?

I hear that Pel and his family love it in Fla. so I don't see them coming back to Ky. He will end up somewhere and like some others have said he may take some time off and wait for a good offer.

Barbee was always going to be the assistant coach at UK. Don't know why people did not see this.
