Want a good laugh from the past ?

I'll be honest with you, I always felt there was some truth to this. Not "envy", but definitely a chip on the shoulder thing for Cal when it comes to Pitino. The article that came out not long after this one talked about the awful rumor about Cal that he had told a recruit that another coach was dying...and hinted that it may have actually been started by Pitino. Cal has chased this ghost around ever since. Pitino went pro, Cal soon followed. Pitino went to Louisville, Cal went to Memphis. Cal was upset when Louisville stopped playing Memphis.

If Rick is either completely neutered, run out of town, or both by this scandal, it could take some of that edge off of Cal. Why does he make that extra recruiting trip in September or trip to some high school gym in the middle of nowhere when it's 20 degrees in January...because he knows getting that kid is his edge on Pitino. Pitino runs off five stars, Cal cultivates their egos successfully. With Pitino out of the picture, I worry that the next NBA phone call will be the one Cal says yes to.

While I think some of this is true, I think there's some dots being connected that aren't there. Memphis was the only job worth a damn willing to offer Cal at the time. It had nothing to do with Pitino being at UL. UK is the mecca of college basketball. It also had nothing to do with Pitino being at UL, and Pitino leaving louisville will have no bearing on what Cal will do.

I agree there's some coincidences when it comes to these two, and I do believe theres way more to their story than they let on, but I wouldn't go as far as those claims.

Cal has never suffered from Pitino envy but rather like Tubby say's it's more chip on shoulder thing. There is also the thing that Bozo doesn't mention and it's Pitino's arrogance and his wanting to look down his long nose at Cal. Pitino has for too long considered Cal to be beneath him. He wouldn't play Memphis when Cal was there because he didn't want to help Cal or be beaten by him. Pitino also was like ' you coach at those second tier schools and I coach at top ten programs" type of mentality. Now that Coach Cal has landed the top job in college basketball,Pitino knows the writing is on the wall. Think about the time table of L-ville starting to add strippers and hookers to their recruiting arsenal! Is it a huge coincidence that it started when Cal arrived at Ky and signed his first #1 class at Ky? I think not?

Congrats on literally getting zero facts correct, literally zero. Cal went to New Jersey on June 6th, 1996, Pitino to Boston on May 7th 1997. John Calipari went to Memphis on March 12, 2000 and Pitino to Louisville on March 21, 2001. How about Cal coaching the Domincan and then Pitino following suit and coaching Puerto Rico? I mean literally get 1 fact right, just 1. Also if you think Cal is chasing Rick's shadow and cares about nothing else you're are literally an insane person. Cal has passed Rick and is on to trying to catch bigger fish. I mean isn't 3 stacks having Cal envy? Sure seems to be by your logic.

What a disgusting slurpfest!!!!!!

I swear. Reading that, for the first time in my life, I'm actually glad we have Jerry Tipton.

I won't hold my breath, but I sure hope there were some Lil Bro fans somewhere with the common decency to be turned off by that gay love letter.

Anyone ever writes a piece of suckup trash like that about our program and I'll personally kick his ass.

Great job correcting TT, the only thing you left off was the bullshit about the rumor. Pitino not Cal started the rumor Lou Carneseca(sp) was dying then tried to blame it on Cal. Here is a quote from an article in SI . Lou talked to Cal and stated he didn't believe Cal started or repeated the rumor.

Pitino brought up a pernicious rumor at a 1986 Big East coaches meeting: that Calipari told recruits that St. John’s coach Lou Carneseccawas deathly ill with cancer. (Carnesecca was not sick, and Pitino now says he never believed the rumor.)

Evans, the Pitt coach, remembers that it was Pitino-not Carnesecca-who brought up the rumor about Calipari and the cancer allegation at the coaches’ meeting in ’86.

Maybe one of the more absurd posts I've ever read on Rafters in the 6 years that I've been on here posting, and that's saying something.

If you think John Calipari will leave Kentucky, literally the best job in college basketball and a top 3 job in all of basketball, pros included, because Rick is no longer at an inferior school down the road, then you're just not a smart person, at all.

* Pitino made his first Final Four and then went to the Knicks. Calipari made his first Final Four and then went to the Nets. He took the Nets job when it was strongly rumored Pitino was considering it.

* Calipari went to Memphis first, but he WAS very upset that Pitino quit scheduling Memphis. That was the beginning of their feud.

* Read the rumor thing quoted above. In that same article (I think), Garfinkel or Vaccaro or one of those guys who likes both Calipari and Pitino says that Cal winning a title at UK meant "he no longer has to chase the ghost".

* Look at the long list of digs Cal has taken at Pitino since he has been here. Do you notice him taking those digs at anyone else consistently? Anyone? I can't think of another coach he has zinged more than once. Can you?

The gist of my post was that the desire to beat Pitino has been what fuels Cal's engine. Cal works very, very hard at what he does. If you have ever met someone who does this, there is always something that drives it. Always. Larry Bird said he cried the day he found out Magic had AIDS. His rival was gone, and that chip on the shoulder was gone.

I hope Cal has many years left at UK. If he turned down the Cavs, maybe at his age he'll quit fielding offers now. But make no mistake about it, he's not celebrating Pitino's downfall. If you think that, you don't understand successful people.

I don't think it was the desire to beat Pitino, exactly - at least not in the way I'm reading what you wrote (head to head). I think he set Pitino's time at UK as his bar, and is striving to exceed it. But, Pitino doesn't have to stay at Louisville for him to do that. Once Cal passes Pitino's biggest accomplishment (1 title) then his next bar is to pass Rupp.

Just my opinion.

How about this...his desire to TOP Pitino. To forever show the little jerk that he is every bit the coach Rick is and then some.

You know how Cal and Crean became friends? This is straight from Cal. Cal felt Crean was getting the "you're not worthy" treatment from other coaches in C-USA. Other coaches meaning Pitino. Crean and Pitino also hate each other. Probably for the same reason Cal hates Pitino.

While I'm not sure I entirely agree, I do understand your point - and it does make sense.

Agree with everyone that Tubbys take was awful and his facts were wrong! It's clear to me that its the other way around, that it's been Rick intimidated by Cal that caused him to stab Cal in the back saying back to trying to stop him from getting the UMass job ( not helping as he claimed ) and starting those vicious rumors. Its hilarious to insinuate that Cals motivation for taking the Nets job over Griffin UMass ( which is a no brainer ) simply because Rick was rumored to want the Knicks job, lmao!!!!! It's the opposite, as I said, Ricks been scared of being passed up by Cal, and that fear has caused his demise!

Well if you think that beating Rick Pitino is what drives John Calipari, then you've been living under a rock and have literally heard nothing that has come out of the man's mouth over the past 6 years.

From a USA story last month:

“Want to know what my goal is?’’ he said. “Do you think it’s to win national titles? Let me win more than the next guy? Do you think I’m going to have the number of my wins on my tombstone? Do you think I really give a (expletive)?

I want half of the NBA All-Star Game to have played for me,’’ he said. “So when I walk in, 24 guys, 12 of them played for me. I got four (NBA All-Stars) right now.’’

“Right now I can feel and see that I’m making a difference,’’ said Calipari, who was 72-112 with the New Jersey Nets before getting fired 20 games into the 1998-99 season. “Could I do that in an NBA job? Because I don’t need to go to the NBA and make all the money or win the championship for the owner of the team. That’s not what creates joy for me.’’

I think Cal certainly looked up to Rick and strived to get to where Rick was as a coach at one time. After all, he was quite a bit younger and Rick was also an Italian-American who had "made it" to the top. They had history together.

However, I honestly think that Cal doesn't really think much about Rick these days and I believe him when he told that joirnalist, in a very candid interview on his way to a recruiting trip, that he could give a crap about winning more titles than the next guy. Now I think his passion for the kids he helps will bring him another title at some point.

Rick Pitino is a caricature of his former self and Cal, quite frankly, passed him up years ago.

I guess I pissed off the pollyannas on this board. Oh well. Cal isn't here because he loves Kentucky fans any more than Rick is staying on at U of L "for the fans who deserve it". I think Cal is a great coach and an even better person, but I am under no spell that makes me think it's all about us. He came THIS close to taking the Cavaliers job what...15 months ago?

It's all about egos with these guys. Every one of them. If you think any differently you just don't understand what makes people tick. Ask Tom Brady about Peyton Manning publicly, he'll tell you "Peyton's a great guy, blah blah blah." Ask him when he's had a few drinks and he thinks no one will repeat it, and he'll tell you every black mark on Peyton's resume. Look at Jordan's Hall of Fame speech, where he talked about everyone who slighted him during his career.

Cal came to Kentucky to show Pitino, K, Izzo, and all the other "made men" in college basketball (but especially Pitino) that he could win on the same level they do if given one of the top jobs. Pitino treated him like the underling and that has eaten at Cal the last 15-20 years.

Why this comes as some sort of insult to some of you makes me wonder if you are any better than Zipp or some of those other guys on the U of L board.

Tom Brady owns Manning historically. I doubt he cares anything about mannings records. Why would he? The only thing people need to know about manning is you won't have to worry about him when the playoffs/pressure is on.

Other than that, of course this is about egos. But that's not really the issue. You were basically saying Cal is making conscious decisions based on Pitino's moves. That's absured man.

Like I said, some of your original statement had some points if you're not reading too much into it, but all in all, eh... Can't walk out there with ya. I won't blast/ignore/ban/murder you over it though.

I totally respect that. I don't always agree with you, either, but I respect you as a poster on here. I really get sick of the "this is the worst take I have ever heard" crowd on here, though. That hyperbole usually comes out of Pitino's mouth.

Rick not only tried to take credit for Cal's hiring at UMASS, Pitino actually floated the story that he reached into his own pocket and wrote a check to meet Cal's salary demands.

In truth, Rick was a no vote in the Cal hiring process. Rick Pitino is an out of control egomaniac as well as a pathological liar.

Also water is wet, the sky is blue, etc.

If you honestly think a majority of fans wanted to run Cal off in 2014, then you are truly clueless.

Do you really believe that, or are you just stirring the pot?

Wait, don't answer that. Doesn't really matter what you think. It's an incredibly dumb thing to say regardless.

I remember some people having issues with where we were after the NIT and our skids in '14, but I think the media acting as if Cals seat was warming was just dumb. I remember a board poll back then that asked a simple question. Is the program headed in the right direction. Overwhelming YES responses. I wish I had it to show.

I hate posts like this, and not because of the spelling challenges.

Cal had $80 million reasons to consider that job, and I would strongly speculate that he had a pretty good idea what Lebron was going to do before coach decided to turn them down.

Or is that turned them doubn?
