Vocal minority?

I'm fine with giving Coach Pope a fair chance , but on the surface , the initial first 8 hours of the introduction of him , its just shocking . His resume doesnt exactly scream " UK Potential " . But no hate from me , Lets get some players and roll . PLAYERS ARE EASY TO GET . YOU BUY THEM . It's the way it is now . Let's roll , at least we have a guy that loves Kentucky .

This is the type of post that makes us look unhinged. Well, some of you folks are unhinged.
Unhinged is what BBN needed to stop this shit. This whole thing just proved to me our boosters aren’t shit. UT and A&M stopped hires they hated yet this shit still went through.

As fans, you absolutely have to eat what you are given and take it. If you are a season ticket holder, cancel them if you don't like it. I've read this board for years and have read nothing but people saying that they would never donate a nickel to NIL, encouraging other fans to not go to games and quit buying UK gear. So as a fan, you absolutely have to take what you get. If you don't like it, there are other teams. I will always cheer for my school, the University of Kentucky.

Did you live in Iraq under Saddam Hussein? "Kick me, beat me, kill me, I love Saddam!"

Ever think that maybe, just maybe the boosters were ok with the hire after we were turned down by our top choices? I mean that $4 million pledged from a few key boosters since the Pope news came out sure doesn’t scream “we hate this hire….. give me my pitchfork”.

Maybe at least let him build a staff/roster and coach an actual game before proclaiming failure? Even better, go call some hogs.

Love the Pope hire. I'm excited to see him bring nostalgia and enthusiasm back to the program. So much better than bringing actual cheaters to lead the program.

I get what you are saying but the issue here is that it gives a pass to the people making decisions on these hires. Its like we have to just eat whatever we are given and take it even though we know there were better options out there. It is one of those "Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining" type of things.

I think Mitch made an easy cheap and safe hire for sure and sprinkled in some nostalgia to sweeten it.

But it’s done now. Nothing we can do about it but support this guy. He’s one of us and I hope he kills it. We’re in 1000x times better shape than we were 3 weeks ago. This guy will fight his ass of for UK. You think Pope would let Shaedon Sharpe just sit there? You think he’d let players decide they don’t want to play D in a game? Stand around and watch loose balls? Cmon…he’s not going to allow anything to disrespect or embarrass that name on the jersey. This dude will take losses personal and wins will mean everything. Just like most of us. I’ll take that all day everyday over Cals bs and live w the results.

That's fine. All I'm saying is that I disagree with those who are like "Mitch made his decision and you HAVE to support it!" People have the right to do whatever they want in terms of support they are willing to extend, whether that means going to games, buying tickets, donating money, etc. That doesn't mean they have the right to be jerks about it, though, if they don't want to back Pope and I think if they were to go to his press conference and boo that would childish.

Personally, I'll back the new coach until I have some reason not to even though I disagree with the hire.

As I sit here scouring the message boards and internet, I am sincerely hoping that what I see is a vocal minority of fans or opposing teams fans trying to make us look bad.

It is embarrassing to see what seems to be a large percentage of the Kentucky fan base reacting the way they are. Mark Pope has been nothing but a class act his entire life. He is a lot better coach than Cal, and given the resources I think he will be special. He will coach for the name on the front of the jersey which I assure you is not spelled ‘NBA’, and every game, the regular season SEC championship, SEC tournament championships, and NCAA tournament championships will be as important to him as it is for us. We haven’t had someone like that in a long time.

I think a lot what I am reading has to do with some ‘fans?’ love for Cal or hatred for Mitch. Either way, I always felt that our fans were special, but if you are going to eat your own while hoping for failure to prove your point you are no fan. Please support some other team. I think Kentucky will be fine without you.
They aren’t true fans and most are trolls from other schools

Did you listen to Matt Jones last night???

Who is hoping for failure? No one that I’ve seen. The fact of the matter is that Pope should not be the hire unless a laundry list of people said no. Other than “he is us”, no way would you be advocating for his hire.

Hes done ok out in Utah, but nothing in his coaching career would lead you to believe that he’s ready for this magnitude of a job. If the job came open in another 5 or 6 years, sure. But not now.

It was time for the Calipari era to end. But the fact that he was blown out and Pope is the hire is a giant kick in the nuts. I’ll be rooting for the team next season like i always do, but let’s not try to put lipstick on a pig. As it stands now, this was a terrible hire.
Nobody is "hoping" for failure, but there sure are a whole lot of moaners and groaners out there who have already written UK Basketball's obituary before he's even had a chance to assemble a roster or name his first assistant.

Just give the guy a chance before all the doomsday talk, some of the best coaches out there didn't take off until they were somewhere they had better resources and backing.

This. He might turn out good but Mitch should absolutely have to answer for how this went down. No way he should've been that high and hired that fast.

I'm 100% behind him. I thought we could do better and overpaid him based on resume , but this is who Mitch wanted. I hope it works out. He's a Kentucky guy and can't help but hope he succeeds.

Okay. I keep hearing this. Just so I know, who did we offer and/or talk to? I didn’t know that was made public.

Sorry to bust your bubble but the outrage is EVERYWHERE. I’ve seen Mitch’s address, phone number and anything else you can thing of posted in about 5 different places. I called the UK office and the opening message said ‘please wait to leave a message but note that AD Mitch Barnharts mailbox is full and can’t accept anymore messages.’ I’ve seen people wishing death on him. While it’s not Pope’s fault technically, all of that anger is going to transfer directly to him when he starts bringing in players that a place like Vandy wouldn’t even take to fill the roster. Poor himself has to know he’s not ready, hasn’t earned this and it’s going to be a disaster. I can’t believe he would come here knowing he’s going to be hated by a large part of BBN and never given a chance.

This hire has 0.01% chance of even remote success. For Pope to have had even a chance, the entire BBN would have had to been fully on board and supporting him. Even then it’s a long shot. He will have far less than half of the fanbases support. Kal was despised on here and that poll asking who we’d rather have between the two, Kal was winning in it.

I’ve come up with probably 30+ reasons why this is absolutely horrible. How does Mitch’s dumbass get a coach for the women with a final four on the resume and the coach he gets for the men has never even won a tournament game!?

It’s malpractice and inexcusable. It’s shortsighted as hell and just shows how incompetent/stupid/lazy Barnhart is.
This ^ is wrong. You’re making up numbers and statistics that aren’t even true. You state he will be hated by a large portion of the BBN (lie) and you give him a 0.01% chance of even remote success (lie). The man was a Rhodes Scholar candidate, captain of arguably the best team in UK history, won a NC coached by one of the best (at that point in history) coaches in college basketball, and loved by all of his ‘96 teammates as well. I like Pope’s overall resume’ in life a lot better than yours. He can lose every damn game and be better than that lying, phony, narcissistic POS we’ve had stealing from us for the past 8-9 years. You need to think a little before you come out with the things you just posted.

Some of you are soo optimistic you probably think the milk man had to milk the cow when he was delivering to your wife earlier today. Why else was he there so long. Only thing that makes sense.

Doubt we'll know beyond Drew and Hurley. Jones said shaka was approached. Everyone reported pearl wasn't even considered because of perceived baggage. Oats has something non basketball related reason he was out.

So I gather from your response you (like me) really don’t know everyone who was offered or contacted.

If anyone reads this and knows the answer to who we offered or contacted please enlighten me. I am very interested in who ACTUALLY knows and how they know. As of right now all I have heard are assumptions.

The jury is out on how effective he will be and you didn’t have to make the decision this early. Don’t know what to tell you.
Correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is the transfer portal closes May 1st. Wouldn’t you think it is important to hire a coach as soon as possible? You will definitely need transfer portal kids to build a roster.

Secondly, to help with building a roster don’t you a need a staff of assistants to help sell kids on the program.

Thirdly, my understanding is we were struggling to get buy in from boosters (under Cal) to provide money for NIL. Wouldn’t you need time to get that in place? My understanding is that is taking off in a big way since Mark Pope was announced.

In my opinion if we waited a week or so to make a decision we would hamstring any coach we would hire. Not to mention what if your desired target ended up saying no.

We’re not gonna be good next year. Why get in a rush to sign a guy who would say yes regardless of when you asked him? There’s gonna be a transition period no matter what. You decided to go with a guy who hasn’t proven anything. Hope I’m wrong.

It was a panic hire by Mitch. He as much said so with his comments about trying to get a roster together. No matter who they hired next season is already done for. Pope may or may not end up being a good hire who knows. The problem I have is he could have hired anyone with a resume as good or better than Pope’s. Why not wait a week and see what could happen with Billy D? The last time Mitch went about this with no help and no input from others he hired BCG. I’m afraid we are going to end up on same level as that hire minus the off court issues. Also it is really hard to go back home. It rarely if ever ends well or works out.

I can’t wait for all the doubters and naysayers to eat crow when Mark Pope is successful. That is if they have the guts to admit it when it works. I promise you if I’m wrong I will stand up and say so.

No one cares, cuz you don’t matter…

No one is mad at Mark! We feel bad for him honestly. We are enraged at the DUMBASS AD and administration for being so out of touch and worthless.

Not only did we make a pretty bad offer, we offered a contract that pays him more than Hurley, Drew, Oats and Donovan just made this past year. And he has 0 tournament wins in 9 seasons.
You know, Lead. We've gave you hell over the years. But this is the best i've ever seen you. Great post.

The overall process was handled so poorly, noone even got to the part where we massively overpaid. Only Mitch lol

Everything you just posted means jack shit when it comes to coaching and winning titles at UK as the coach. You’re just recycling the same BS that was spewed on KSR today to try and rationalize this hire. The amount of coping and delusion with this hire is at an alltime high. His resume is the same or WORSE than Gillespie’s when he was hired.

Trying to hype up and back this hire will just embolden UK to pull this same shit on the next search in a few years. The fact that nobody put their foot down just shows NOBODY has a set of balls in Lexington.

He’s smearing UK and Mitch behind the scenes right now too. Drew called an anonymous sec coach. And asked him if it was safe for his kids to go to school after a loss. Guess who he called?
Seriously? As if any coaches kids anywhere in this country have ever been in danger after a loss. Drew's the head case and I wouldn't be surprised to fjnd out he's a christian nationalist head case after reading his comments.

I'm with you in supporting Pope but we are the minorityth you also. I think this is a good hire. Mark Pope comes with enthusiasm, high work ethics, high basketball IQ, a strong desire to win (and win for Kentucky), and no baggage. I guess some of our fans think this is a worse fire than Scheyer and GO CATS!!

I'm with you in supporting Pope but we are the minority I'm afraid.
I'm with you also. And I believe we are only a minority on this board and not across the BBN. This is a good hire. Hurley is the only other one I thought may be better. GO CATS!!
