Vitale loses it on radio show. Gets hot, says "damn" when host says K pays players

This is CLASSIC. I especially love that the bias is starting to get called out, along with Duke's payment of players. I think last night was enough for a lot of fans.

Per Barstool Sports

So Dick Vitale was on a Baton Rouge radio show this morning. You can click here to listen to it and I highly suggest it because, well, Dickie V LOST HIS MIND. It’s somewhat long – right around 20 minutes, but here are some of the highlights.

Vitale starts the interview defending Pitino right away, because, well, that’s what Dickie V does. Obviously the interview was based around Will Wade being suspended from coaching with report that Wade was on wiretap discussing paying players.

Because it’s Vitale he thinks the worst thing that can happen in college hoops is paying players. He loses his mind during games – when he’s not discussing replays – to talk about how this is the worst possible thing in college basketball.

I was shocked about Vitale using ‘damn.’ We know his no curse word rules so you know he’s flustered here on a radio show being called out for being a hypocrite. Listen, I love Vitale’s love for the game. He’s one of the guys you think of when you grew up with college hoops. But, it’s time for him to be pushed out. He’s lost it.

The radio hosts dropping nuggets like ‘how much did Duke pay for Zion’ and bringing up all the other reports was beautiful. Just casually dropping it in to jab at Vitale.

I can’t remember Vitale losing his mind like this. I mean he absolutely entered the interview firing. He was ready to go. He was ready to fight. Here’s part of the thing. We have to know, especially now, that everyone that covers anything has their preferences. They defend their people and aren’t afraid to speak out about others.

Just don’t you dare call Vitale a hypocrite. Don’t you dare.

Who cares what Dick Vitale says? Vitale is only relevant because he works for a network that holds exclusive rights on the first pick to broadcast a certain number of NCAA basketball games every year including the postseason tournament. For some reason, the network uses him as one of its analysts. Who can explain why self-serving bozos like Vitale, Bill Walton, and Billy Packer get chosen to have these jobs?

I could be wrong but my understanding is that the Bagley family was provided Nikey money through the fatger’s AAU program, which from my understanding is completely legal.

As for the wiretaps, again, my understanding is that during the trial, someone “said” that Zion’s father (biological or stepfather?) was asking for benefits. There is no wiretap if anyone associated with Zion actually asking for benefits. There’s nothing you can do with that.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe Zion would be ineligible if a parent accepted benefits. There is quarterback that plays in NC that went to a SEC school who might be able to help explain this scenario since his situation led to the rule.

I’m sorry but Duke should absolutely lose the 2010 banner due to Lance Thomas, the 1999 runner up banner with Maggette, and the 2001 banner due to Duhon.

And that’s just what we know.

I believe you’re right but that’s my point. All we have is a guy who said Zion’s father was asking for benefits. The father isn’t on tape asking for benefits. A third party is claiming that he was asking for benefits. There’s no proof that he actually asked, much less that anybody received anything. I would imagine that if the FBI was investigating this the whole time, then that proof that the father actually asked or received anything would come out. You can’t hide that from the FBI. They have the LSU coach on tape.

But there is of a Kansas assistant talking to an Adidas rep about what Zion is asking for.

Selective enforcement is going to be the death of the NCAA. When big, big dogs start to feel like other big dogs are playing under a different set of rules, the whole house will come tumbling down. And that's exactly what we're headed for when Duke and UNC can do whatever the hell they want without any repercussions.

I'll ask again- where has Zion's family been living since the fall, and how is that being paid for? And why, exactly, would that not be worthy of investigation, considering how his name came up in FBI wiretaps?

Those really shouldn't be difficult questions to answer, BTW.

Vitale just showed his ass on that radio show. Talk about ego. Going on someone else’s show and literally refusing to stop talking long enough to let the host make a statement. He knows deep down he’s a hypocrite.

The FBI is involved. Surely, if there was proof that Zion’s family asked for benefits (so far only heresay), and the family actually received those benefits, with one such benefit being a million dollar home, you don’t think that would be all over the place in the news, in the court documents, etc?

Inuendo is toxic. Any NCAA player can be declared ineligible if it can be proven that their parent accepted benefits in violation of the recruiting and eligibility rules. If you have actual evidence that Zion Williamson or his family accepted impermissible benefits, let's see it.

I lost all respect for Vitale about 10 yrs ago when he gave UK fans so much flack for Tubby leaving and going to Minn. He went on and on and on about how UK fans ran Tubby out of Lexington, how fans should be ashamed of themselves, blah blah blah. He wants two sets of rules, one for his favorites and friends, and another for everyone else.

Of course I don't "really know", but there are pretty strong indications that it's been in a house valued at around $900,000, with a rental value of around 3,600 a month.

How hard would that be for the NCAA to verify? But are they even going to try, or are they going to sweep it under the rug like every other sketchy thing that's gone on at Duke and UNC for the last 20 years?

Your program started to sell its soul in the mid 90's, after K realized that recruiting the Cherokee Parks' and Greg Newton's of the world wasn't going to cut it if he wanted to stay at the top of the game. Then it went into overdrive the last 5 years, as K got tunnel vision with the end of his career drawing close.

Duke is neck-deep in the swamp and yet continues to pretend that it's somehow morally superior to everyone else.

They shouldn’t be able to go after Zion for heresay. I don’t disagree with that. But they’ve done it at other programs in the past. Again, they spent the better part of a year looking into skal because some pissed off grassroots Memphis guy said his guardian was shopping him.

They didn’t seem to care that Easterwood had all the reason in the world to try and sabotage skal’s eligibility.

Meanwhile you have a Kansas assistant on tape discussing a bidding war for Zion and the NCAA just kind of shrugs it off.

The difference? Zion was the most marketable player to come through division 1...ever?...and he is also playing for the most marketable program.

You can play coy all you want but everyone knows damn well if this were another school beyond UNC or Duke, the NCAA would be prepared to smother the campus with investigators. After the crap that has gone on with Duhon, Maggette and Thomas, nobody believes the NCAA will do a damn thing to Duke.

You act like the only schools ever caught were caught because the NCAA had stone cold proof with pictures and signed confessions before they investigate. Hell they damn near had that with the Maggette situation and did nothing but punished UCLA for the exact same thing. By exact, I mean the same damn guy paid Rush that paid Maggette. The Times Picayune reported enough on Duhon that would have got any other school investigated. Lance Thomas didn’t cooperate so nothing the NCAA could do. How did that work for Memphis and Rose?

Keep posting your bullshit. We know Duke will get away with it. But spare us the Duke is clean bit and the NCAA doesn’t treat Duke differently. Duke is the modern day UCLA, K is the modern day Wooden and someday whoever is your modern day Sam Gilbert will be known. It will just be “too late” to do anything just like it was with UCLA.

Well the same applies to Smart for LSU. He wasnt' on the wiretap phone call asking for benefits it was just mentioning his associates asking for money. So again...why treat him different than Zion?

You need to read all of my responses to DukeBlu along with his posts. My statement was fair and accurate. Absolutely nothing wrong in stating that a player would be ineligible if a parent received improper benefits. I never said whether he did or did not. As DukeBlu pointed out and as far as I know, there has not been a release of a wiretap of Zion's father asking for benefits, but there has been a wiretap of an assistant coach and an Adidas rep. discussing him doing so. I agree it doesn't prove that he was asking for benefits, BUT it should raise major red flags to the NCAA if they had any integrity at all. It's not like an anonymous poster on a message board saying this. It's the parties directly involved in the recruitment of said player.

Whether the FBI has any wiretaps of Zion's father or not I do not know. They are going after the university officials and Adidas rep's. that committed actual crimes. The players are the NCAA's responsibility.

Whether guilty or not we don't know, but I think it's ridiculous to think it's not worthy of an NCAA investigation when someone gives specifics as to what a parent is asking for.

Hopefully other interviewers will follow the lead of these two and continue to pin down Vitale on his blatant hypocrisy. I almost threw up in my mouth when he started schilling his book at the end.

It is a shame...because in the late 80's early 90's, Vitale was incredibly entertaining and did so much for the sport. No he is just a caricature of himself.

This is all true....but it wouldn't kill NCAA to look into why Zion's family is living in North Carolina and in a plush neighborhood vs. where they grew up before doing to Duke. It is an obvious red flag. I get it sounds like a burden to keep up with all players/rumors /

The thing that makes Vitale look and sound like a hypocrite here is the way he starts barking and starts repeating his own credentials anytime he or a school/coach he prefers is questioned. He's just trying to silence those who would dare ask questions. If there is nothing to hide and nothing to avoid, there is no reason to get your feathers all ruffled. The over the top reactions are intended to make them back off.

how hard would it be to figure this out?

the average person could show that Williamson lived in a house worth X in 2017 and then just before his son committed to Duke, they bought a house worth Y or a Lexus or he got a job at a Duke alumni company making $300K a year

No parent is going to sit on that money for 6 years when they have a one and done son.

----------------

From an article....

If you're skeptical on the Williamson situation, remember that government witness/former Adidas money-dropper T.J. Gassnola already testified to paying a family friend of Deandre Ayton's $15,000 in addition to attempting to set up Ayton's mother with a job and permanent housing in a failed attempt to get Ayton to Kansas. Gassnola, facing the prospect of going to federal prison if he doesn't fully cooperate with the government, has no impetus to lie.

Gassnola also admitted that he felt he let KU coach Bill Self down by failing to deliver Ayton to Lawrence. He told this to Self and he said it in front of the jury.

Code and Gassnola were associates, both in a small "underground" group at Adidas known as the "Black Opp's." The Williamson story obviously has similar components to Ayton's. Yet to be proven is Ayton getting paid to go to Arizona, just as is the case with Williamson to Duke. Ironically, Kansas' inability to land those two prominent prospects has put it in the crosshairs of this case and, you'd have to think, the NCAA. After all, payments on behalf of Adidas to guardians or family members of Silvio De Sousa and Billy Preston have been corroborated.

I have always believed that Dick Vitale has been a good ambassador for the game of basketball. Sure, he can be annoying with his trite expressions and his inane commentary, but the man appears to have a big heart and is genuine. Without question, though, he does play favorites. His unbridled love fest with Coach K and Pitino is nauseating. When Dean Smith was alive, he was the same way with him. The degree to which he defends the former is reminiscent of a public defender. In this instance, full blown hypocrisy is on full display. If Dick is going to call Will Wade out for his egregious actions, then he needs to be fair in calling out the actions of his “buddies.”

No. That Zion's family may have a house provided by Duke is of no concern to the FBI. That they falsified data to get government grants is.But no one goes to jail, they just pay the fine.

I honestly don't think Vitale is anything like some think he is. The guy is stuck on himself. He reminds me of the annoying "Uncle Ed" who shows up at the family picnic in his "new" Cadillac and proceeds to tell everyone how wonderful and great he is and even offers to "invest" for family members.

I wouldn't trust my money with "Uncle Ed" any more than I would trust it with Bernie Madoff, who was very well liked by many and that enabled him to scam them.

Imagine if you had a secret was very incriminating. Would you want Dick Vitale to know it? Now, imagine you're a college basketball coach and you've been up to no good. Is there any way you would tell Dick Vitale, the guy who is always on national TV talking about your sport?

Now, imagine you're Dick Vitale and a good friend confides in you about the dark side of recruiting and how he's bent the rules, used middle men and agents, and even has requested certain players be funneled to his program while he keeps "plausible deniability"... is there ANY way Dick shares that on ESPN or on a live radio show? No.

In other words, there is no way Dick Vitale is going to "sell out" his friends, even if he knows things. I'm sure he does know about the dark side of college basketball. I'm sure he knows things about his pals. But he's not gonna talk and he's going talk about his 40-year legacy and rant and rave when anyone dares question him about his buddies as a way to get them to shut up.

Someone needs to show Vitale a picture of the homes that the families of Marvin Bagley & Zion Williamson moved into shortly after they committed to Duke. And then let him say that Krzyzewski & Duke doesn't pay players.

We know that the FBI is involved in the sneaker company investigations. Therefore, IF there is any truth to these allegations of Duke “illegally” funneling money to players, then it will come out. That’s a fact. Until that happens, it’s simply a message board rumor. If nothing comes out then it means there’s nothing there.
