****** UK-UofL Game Thread ******

Third error for UK by Schultz to start the 7th. This is a throw back game for UK.

Games tend to take forever when you can’t throw strikes ... and we can’t throw ‘em. Feel sorry for our catcher who has to catch this mess.

I don't normally do this, but I'm going to tune out. This is just asinine.

Louisville starting to substitute liberally, probably worried about wearing out their starters on the base paths.

... undisciplined... sadly, that’s how this team plays.

TJ changed the walk up song, or did the PA guy also check out?

I think it was criminal not to offer Roger Williams the job.

It’s bad enough that our pitching is terrible ... but our fielding decisions and effort is just as bad. This is an undisciplined, lazy baseball team.

Couple of quick observations:

* we simply don’t have the pitching that is needed to compete at this level

That sure appears to be the case. The question I have regarding the level of pitching on this year's team is this: Is it poor evaluation in recruiting, poor development, bad luck with injuries or kids signing who indicated they would come to school, all of the above, or some combination thereof?

Total systems failure, with no apparent solutions. Poor hitting, fielding, pitching ,no energy, and poor coaching, not much else to put any hope for improvement! Mingione is in a very critical position,to either recover some semblance of a well coached team ,or be replaced in short order!

Well, let’s look at it by class. Italics for those on the roster.

2018:

Ayers, Cottongame, Rigsby, Marsh, Gambino, Burchett, Music, Koester, Daniels, Degen, Norton, Sulzer

This was our recruiting class of freshmen arms. In terms of top end talent, this class lacked a bit. Ayers and Cottongame were two of the best three recruits and were both in the 200 range. Gambino was actually second highest at 215. I think, and could be wrong, that he is redshirting. I believe he is the one they always put in the bullpen box? I don’t believe that any of these guys were lost to the draft, so if they aren’t on the roster it is because they ended up cut after fall. Just as a reference, Thompson was a top 140 recruit. Oddly, we didn't go the JUCO pitching route at all with this class.

2017:

Perry, Jordan, Dobzanski, Ramsey, Bringhurst, Cantillo, Harper, Hazelwood, Lockhart, Marozas, Haake, Miller, Maccocchi, McGeorge

Perry went pro. Jordan was a top 100 recruit and Dobzanski was 170th and Marozas was like 163rd. Jordan, Marozas, and Dobzanski missed their freshmen years due to Tommy John’s. Now, Jordan pitches sparingly due to the injury (presumably), Dobzanski was listed on the roster, but may be off the team(?), and Marozas has gone JUCO where he has thrown just 1 inning this season. UK took a big risk with these three, and so far we have lost on this gamble entirely. In reality, this is probably the thing killing us the most. We, I imagine, were heavily relying on these three to come in and be beasts for us, but none have panned out so far. Hazelwood I think will develop pretty nicely and Harper has his moments. I just don’t like Ramsey. I think he put on bad weight and he throws too straight and misses middle/middle too often. Lockhart is decent. Miller was supposed to come in and redshirt and then play this year, but he was good enough to go in the draft and did. Haake played poorly last year, but we had to know that he was a lock to be drafted. McGeorge got cut.

2016:

Hanson, McGee, Thompson, Machamer, Coleman, Marshall, Freilich, Cleary, Maley

Pretty small class and the first two went pro before college. I don’t know if the staff was expecting Machamer to be back and that threw a big wrench into their plans. This was actually a Henderson class.

2015:

Smith, Hjelle, Keen, McHood

Another small class compared to what Mingione is bringing in. Obviously, none of them are here as seniors. Not sure what happened to Smith after his sophomore year, and Keen quit baseball entirely.

____

2019:

Wibbels (RHP), Cole (RHP), Lee (RHP), Cook (RHP), Margot (LHP), Stupp (RHP), Tate (LHP), Rutledge (RHP)

I don't subscribe to perfect game, so I can't see rankings, but our class overall is ranked in the 30s (IIRC). Rutledge will be a huge key, but I am pretty positive he goes pro. He will be a junior and he is dominating JUCO ball.

Lucas Knowles (LHP) is another JUCO arm signed for next season. He pitched for Washington as a Freshman and is now in the JUCO ranks in Arizona. He's very good and like Rutledge, will probably be drafted high.

Thanks. It can be hard to keep up with the JUCO commitments. I was going off of what was on PG and he wasn't on there. We need to make another cleaned up commitment thread so we can keep it all straight. haha

Justin Rowland did a Q&A with Rutledge after he committed. Here is the most relevant question and answer:

Cats Illustrated: It can be a tough issue to talk about because there's so much unknown, but in terms of the draft, what have you heard?

Rutledge: That is my goal, to get drafted this spring and sign. I think if I can continue to have a good year, get better and prove myself I think the opportunity will be there for me to sign. If that doesn't work out then I'll go to Kentucky and prove myself there.

Agree law...as I told Jeff earlier Collett, Shelby, Shinn are the only everyday SEC players along with Thompson as a pitcher and they all will more than likely be gone next year. I could see Collett & Shelby coming back, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it.. That leaves ZERO to be encouraged about...and there is ZERO reasons for excuses. Maybe one of the top 5 facilities in the country and don't want to hear the weather excuse thing as UK is sandwiched between IU, u6 and Vandy and they all have top notch "programs" . MB is going to have to have a hard heart to heart talk with Mingione about his program. This program is in much worse condition today than it was when Henderson was let go.

Here is an article on Knowles... if Baseball America is running an article on him then it is pretty likely he won't see Lexington.

A pretty interesting aspect... Knowles got his first start in JUCO and it was opposite of Jackson Rutledge. Pretty cool.

With all this analysis about all these guys you would think ALL programs would struggle especially the three schools I mentioned yet they all have excellent programs ...why is that? Something else is wrong and I personally think we bought fools gold with Mingione.
