UK Hiring New LB Coach

Oh I know, that's why I said earlier that he did all this at OU. That's why I don't think he will be all that great here on the recruiting front. Unfortunately, UK doesn't have the same weight behind its name as OU does so I don't see him coming close to bringing in any of that type of talent. I know he can coach LBers, I just think this is just going to be another recruiting dud on the staff when we needed an ace recruiter with this hire. I'm not a fan of this hire but hoping it pans out because if it doesn't I don't see Mark firing him.
Not sure how his recruiting will work out here but the other side of that coin is, he was recruiting against some of the best recruiters in the country, to some of the blue bloods and, he won some of those battles.

I find all this angst over hiring Mike Stoops to coach a position pretty amusing. The guy has been a P5 HC for crying out loud, and coaching for 36 years... he's over qualified. He sure as hell knows what he must do on the recruiting trail, and easily understands how to coach the LB unit.
I think a lot of fans are apprehensive because Mike more or less failed as a big time DC at OU, and could find himself getting the role here when White moves on. Stoops loves promoting from within the program. If he can help with game planning, firing up players, recruiting, ILBs, etc, then great. If CMS promotes Mike to DC, we may have some issues.

Tons of experience or not, the dude hasn't been particularly successful when compared to brothers Bob and Mark - even when coaching under them.

I hope he kills it. I'm just cautiously optimistic, and I think a lot of folks are as well.

+1

Back in the day (2003), I, for one, commented here Howard Schnellenberger may require a translator if he took over HC at UK. Fast-forward a few years later and he transformed FAU with zero football history whatsoever into a G5 conference contender.

My concern is also if Mike Stoops can really relate to these kids.

Sure would be hard to fire him. I hope Brad White sticks here for ALONG time.

No offense to anyone in particular, but seeing a number of odd takes in this thread. BTW folks, regardless of who is DC in title, this is and always will be Mark Stoops defense through and through. Was the case with DJ Eliot. Was the case with Matt House and is the case now with Brad White. Sure, each guy may bring their own suggestions or wrinkles to the table, but make no mistake, they are implementing Mark Stoops system.

Would've been awesome to have HS here in his day.

I don't think that's a done deal at all

Yeah, some real sour and weird takes here. He is being hired as the LBer coach.

Does age slow down a coach as a recruiter, or does it make him wiser as an evaluator and planner? Mike Stoops is younger than Nick Saban, Brian Kelly, Sam Pittman, Mike Leach, and Mac Brown. They still seem pretty well plugged in. Mike Stoops just recently spent two years working as an analyst at Alabama, which tells me that he is still inquisitive and invested in college football.

You were not a supporter of the Mark Stoops hire either. So there's that.

I see both potentially good and not as good aspects of hiring Mike. But mostly good. In any case, Mark has done a pretty good job of building his program and his staff. He has earned the benefit of the doubt. I will gladly give that to him, not that it matters.
Just to clarify. I approved of the hiring of Mark, just didn’t like a bunch of the things he did as time went along. He has gotten better with time. You make good points above and I hope his brother works out fine.

I'll go to my grave convinced that if we brought Howard home in 1990 instead of hiring Currys that UK would have won the SEC championship at least once over the next decade. He was ahead of his time in knowing to get Florida kids, that they were willing to go north & brought athleticism just not found elsewhere.

They almost had Howard 1981. Would have killed it

I know he's probably a solid hire but I still don't like it. I'm sure there is someone out there equally as good that isn't related. Working with family just creates problems we don't need
Ditto! Don't like nepotism, never have liked it, and never will. It's just too big of a leap for me to believe that the best person available for a publicly-funded position just happens to be a close relative of the person that made the hire,

Define “publicly funded.”

In his defense from that Baylor game he had the absolute perfect call on 3rd down and it should have been a pick

It's been obvious Stoops wanted to hire his brother for awhile and I think Barnhart stopped him from hiring him, but it was probably one of the requests by Mark to keep him here is to be able to hire Mike. I'm not a fan of nepotism and hope Stoops will be able to make a tough decision if it needs to happen. With that being said, I hope it works out.
He won't be here very long. I will be shocked if he lasts longer than a few years. If the defense continues its success he will become a DC somewhere and move on.

Not sure why anyone would question CMS and his hires, especially on the D side of the ball. I don't know anything about him, but if I were a UK fan I would climb on board with whoever he wanted, especially on that side of the ball.
Methinks we have too many basketball fans who are new to football and ignorant of how important coaching is. In basketball, you can have a great head coach surrounded by recruiting only coaches and do fine, but football is a different story, especially LBs, and I won't even get into how our scheme is more complicated than most when it comes to LBs. Stoops specifically mentioned he needs a former DC level of experience in this position, but our "Put in Richie" football fans want a former player with zero coaching experience. lol

Agreed. I was shocked when I moved here to find out he had been here and wasn't really considered for HC. CURRY....? STARTED to slide at Bama. Wtf was he going to do at UK with THAT offense? It seemed like they wanted to not recruit well and wanted UK football to lose

If he’s so overqualified, why is he an analyst at Alabama? You’d think he’d be able to get a coordinator job somewhere that pays more than $35k/year (and yes, that’s an accurate number).

He wasn't in 2021. He was a DC at a G5 school wasn't he?

Yes... DC at FAU. Rough place to live and work... before that, he was doing the Bama shuffle, living off OU's severance money, I believe. Not exactly a true market for your services when your last employer is still paying you. Thus, Sark, Butch, and a host of others have passed through on the same or similar terms.

Walking into one hell of a linebacker room. Shouldn't be a tough job.

I hope he’s watching how much UGA is sending LBs on blitzes. Even though they aren’t getting the sack they are affecting Young and disrupting the play! UK needs to stop being so passive IMO.
