UK - EKU game thread

@UKWildcats1987

I think our team will continue to improve and I’m not going to throw the season away because we sucked against Eastern Kentucky in week 2. You are welcome to do that, if you like.
Remember, their was a time in the not to distant past, UK wouldn’t play EKY because they didn’t want to get beat.

Years ago Cawood Ledford referred to this type of game as a "stinker." And this one reeked. Burn the film and move on.

Did UK lose Davis there at the end??

At the end of the day a W is a W, but I’m VERY concerned about both sides of the ball as we move towards playing SEC competition.
The D essentially only gives up 10 points if you take away the blocked punt that you can't allow ever, but that 28 yard run right up the middle sticks with me. Obviously Leary and all the receivers not named Robinson also need to get on the same page.

Stupid stuff. I live in the town. I know Coach Kidd. You have no clue. Even Joker could pull out a win.
Nah, Joker pulled out a few wins, but it is hard to win in the SEC with two four stars playing his first year, and it got worse with no facilities improvement for a full decade. Especially when the SEC average was 38 four stars (plus five stars) in four years his first year, minus Vandy of course.

Walker and the DL have had a rough game. EKU is being allowed to hold pretty blatantly though. On third and long you could have called holding on half of their line.

Good practice for SEC games then. They'll be used to it NOT being called.

Look, Deion is a great football mind. But this talk of "him going to the playoffs" I'm seeing on the webs is ridiculous.

It MAY be ridiculous, but TCU was IN the playoffs last year (with the schedule they played) instead of another SEC team. All Colorado has to do is win and they're in because the hype will sell itself. ANY TEAM with this much media attention and a clean sheet will be in the playoff over an ACC, Pac12, or maybe Big12 Champion with one or more than one loss.

There's still only 4 teams in right now

They barely beat a depleted and obviously overrated TCU. Now granted, good win.
And now they beat a volleyball school.
When he beats USC, then I'll perk up. I think he's gonna build a good program there, but people need to hold up handing him the crown.

I mean it will be UC 2.0 if it happens. UC had a cakewalk schedule last year, nearly lost their next to last game (and should've) and anyone with sense knew they were gonna get creamed. And they did.

I think a lot of our penalties on offense are caused by us going a different tempo than we're used to in practice. Yes, they HAVE to adjust. It just seems like this slower tempo is messing with EVERYTHING including the timing of routes.

I know they don't want to to give away much this early, but dang that is painful for average fans to sit through knowing what is up ahead in out schedule. It was painful for me and I've been a football guy since I was learning how to read

My high hopes were grounded today.
You had dreams. You returned to reality. 7-8 wins is Kentucky. It will always be Kentucky. Enjoy the rare 10 win season. Historically it’s 1-2 times in a lifetime. That isn’t changing. For most of us, we had our 2. We will be lucky to see a 3rd.

There have been four, ever, in more than 100 years. Pretending otherwise is just foolishness.

Final From Kroger Field.

Colonels- 17
Cats- 28

Win is a win. But holy crap was that unnecessarily ugly.
Just the way it is under Stoops. It's pretty effective against inferior opponents even though it's an awful product to watch. But that's usually how it plays out under defensive minded HC's. We won't be playing many pretty games until we get a different HC.

Kirby Smart, Deion Sanders, Kyle Wittingham, and Marcus Freeman are defensive minded HCs. Smart is the most successful coach in the country. I am not following the logic behind your generalization. It does not make sense. I have a different adjective for yesterday's game. Sloppy.

Rewatching the game and watching the officials just WATCH the game. On the first EKU series, missed an intentional grounding and 3 holds on ONE defender on the first EKU TD.

POOR spots and lots of no calls on the EKU DBs during UKs first offensive series, including the play that Dane Key can't make the 3rd down catch. Then on the 1st play from scrimmage on UKs next drive, Kattus has his hands inside his body and let's go as the defender pulls away backwards- and they call holding. Looks like we have 2 different rulebooks so far.

Holding on EKU DB or Anthony Brown-Stephens has a bomb TD on our 2nd series. No call considered

That targeting us so egregious.... I would be posting about every other play if I kept up with this, so I gave up. We still were way too sloppy and undisciplined

Offensive pass interference not called against EKU as the WR INTERFERES 3 times with JQ Hardaway on a long pass.

Stoops plays a very vanilla style like Kirby but Georgia’s roster is the most talented in the country so he doesn’t have to out scheme or overly motivate his team to win. I know Deion played defense in college but he seems to play an open style on offense unlike Stoops. Same with Wittingham. His teams play much faster than Stoops. Stoops played under Hayden Fry in the B10 in the 80’s. It’s just how he feels comfortable coaching.

This.^^^^
You will never get CMS out of his comfort zone for very long because as soon as things don't go perfect, he reverts back to HIS comfort zone.

Same with Saban. Saban was determined to run the ball this year and impose HIS will on the other team playing back in his comfort zone.

Sark played uptempo attacking offense and beat his a$$ WITHOUT having to run it every down and trying to control the clock.

Deion played both ways. Played as a WR and a DB, as well as returned kicks. He credits his time as a WR for how well he played as a DB after learning the WR position.

I think if Stoops had the depth of talent on D that Smart and Saban have the luxury of, he would play more uptempo.

He DOES at some point need to open things up and put his foot on the other team's throats in these early games so his backups can get some real reps with the rest of the first teamers. You can't build depth without also building experience AND playing your starters into the late 4th quarter leads to what happened yesterday with your starting RB getting injured.

Really frickin tired of not seeing our backups get meaningful reps for development during the earlier part of the schedule.

I agree with this. I think most UK fans would like to see UK play the whole 4th Q with backups vs the BS/EKUs of the world which could pay dividends with late season injuries to starters. I also think what we're seeing is the unmentioned drawback of the portal, guys learning to play with/fit in with new teammates.

As sloppy as it was yesterday, UK did score on 3 straight second half drives, probably a fourth had time not run out. I just want them to clean up the unforced errors.

I post on both boards, but there are exclusively Rafters only posters who come only here and post when things are down in football.
You are absolutely right. They are scared to death UK football is taking the limelight off our mediocre basketball program.

And we are mediocre right now. Hope this is the year Cal can get back on track, but I will have to see it to believe it.
