Watched an entire game on youtube of his team vs Shai Alexander's. Duval will fit in perfect and Duke. Has no idea how to play defense. [laughing]

Watched ball handlers just drive by him at will with no attempt to stay in front of them or even give the notion that he wanted to try.

it will be another typical duke team. very poor defensively. allen, duval, trent, carter are all poor defenders. bolden i'll bet is foul prone. and no bench really.

Yeah, but can he slap the floor? I mean sometimes when people slap the floor really hard and trash talk a bit it can be intimidating. Then if they push you down or trip you, it can be just as effective as "good defense."

So this is a complicated issue.

It's a good thing he went to Duke......no way he would have qualified had he come to UK. He'll get the Duke treatment from the NCAA clearinghouse.

I think he'll end up a good defender. His issue in high school was his attitude and effort. It wasn't that he *couldn't* stay in front of those guys, it's that he didn't want to commit to doing so.

That said, the soap opera between he and Gracie will be fantastic to watch unfold. Frank Jackson might be the smartest kid in America.

"Look scuzz, get out of my face or I'll get the tripper to trip you or pecker check ur arse..."

(I know you didn't ask me but those came to mind...)

Dukie: "Yo mama is so poor, I saw her kickin' a can down the street, and I said what'cha doin? And she said, "Movin!"

Opponents: "Hey, don't talk about my mama."

Dukie: "That's what's knows as a burn on you, pal!"

Congrats on watching one game. I watched Kevin Knox in the hoop Summit and he was terrible. I guess he sucks too since we put so much stock into 1 game. You rival @caneintally for the award of biggest homer on this board.

If he is he must have grown a full brain since last year.

So, what makes you think he will improve that much at Duke? Didn't see much growth in Kennard or Allen in that area.

Ive seen a lot of people talk about his academics but him getting eligible doesnt seem to be a concern for anyone at Duke or in the media. Where does this come from, why do you guys say he would struggle to get eligible?

I"ll trust Jonathon Givony's evaluation of Duval's defense more than your couch eye test thank you very much.

"-Outstanding potential defensively. Gets low, moves his feet and puts great pressure on the ball with his size, length and strength. Very impressive when he's focused, competing and working to lock down the opponent - " Source: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Trevon-Duval-81776/ ©DraftExpress

Sounds like sometime he takes possessions off defensively but that's a focus issue and HOF coaches like K and Cal will correct that very quickly.

Going back a ways aren't you? In the last decade, Duke hasn't exactly been a defensive juggernaut.

Was that evaluation before or after he committed to Duke?

KenPom Defensive Ranking
Duke 2007: #5
Duke 2008: #7
Duke 2010: #5
Duke 2011: #10
Duke 2015: #12

Duke's had a very good defensive team in about half of the years in the past decade.

It's tough to consistently elite defensively when you recruit so many OADs unless they have a special proclivity to playing great D due to their athleticism: MKG, Winslow, Davis, etc.

It takes a few years, especially for big men, to master defensive fundamentals and compete on that end of the floor.

You lost the argument when you listed Wojo.

The people who give out these awards must be morons.

He will be the National Defensive Player of the Year then. It worked out that way for Wojo anyway.

So, 4 yrs out of the last 10, they have been good. That's still more often than not, they aren't. They were 47th this past season. They let a team in the 90s offensively put up 88 on them.

Wojo showed his defensive prowess for sure when Wayne turner torched his ass over and over in 98

Well Duval's a tremendous athlete with great strength for a guard and very good lateral quickness, combined with good length. Allen and Kennard don't have those physical gifts.

Basically, he can be as good as he makes his mind up to be, or as good as his coach motivates him to be. We'll see to what extent he decides on those things, but he has all the tools.

He's been to three high schools in three years and spent one season at Advanced Prep, which is a fake school, basically.

He went to IMG Academy in hopes that their reputation would save him, but there's a reason Duke wanted nothing to do with him until the last minute when everyone else spurned them and the other schools in play were Seton Hall and Arizona.

Duke got involved with Duval as soon as he announced he was transferring from API to IMG.

Cautiously.

Duke really got involved with Duval when Quade Green chose Kentucky, Matt Coleman went to Texas and Colin Sexton went to Alabama.

But I'm sure one year at IMG fixed everything. That's how academics work.

Omg wojo! The greatest flop artist in the history of flopping til he got his ankles broke by Wayne turner and couldn't get in front of him to flop. When was the last one?

I'll 100% give you Green on that one. Duke was always recruiting Duval whether they landed Coleman or not. And I don't remember much about Duke being involved with Sexton.

Yeah I'll go with Giovany on husband scouting report after many games over one game, anyone with a clue would

In all seriousness, Duke is usually a decent defensive team. Their numbers are inflated a little by a friendly whistle (especially in ACC play), IMHO.

K teaches them to take charges even if there are no charges, which helps their numbers when refs fall for it. K is brilliant, he knows exactly how to play the game. He knows that if his kids hit the floor it forces the ref to make a call and with all the "respect" (or fear) the refs have for the GOAT, they don't want to tick him off and have their names blasted all over ESPN for making "bad calls" against the "King of College Basketball."

Duke fans can deny it all they want, but K has a clear advantage over every coach he faces off against because of this perception of him being the best. He is the Godfather of the sport. You don't speak against him.

If I was a Duke fan, I would love it. It's helped ya'll to three titles, IMHO. No shame in your coach using ever "legal" advantage he has to win games. K is extremely intelligent and is extremely influential. He controls the games through intimidation and manipulation. Many great leaders throughout history have done the same. Other coaches in other eras have done this as well. Rupp was just like K in the 50's and 60's.
