Trent Noah had 4 rebounds in 12 minutes, Amari 5 in 23

On a positive note, Oweh was a MAN on the glass today. Gonna need that if Carr is out for a while. Amari’s gotta pick it up
Even aside from today, Oweh is one of the few guys (only?) that seems to be able to rebound in traffic. The rest basically seem to need the ball to drop in their hands (where it's likely to first bounce off their hands and then finally come to rest) with no one there to take it away.

Amari LOOKS like an imposing player, and I think that's part of why he's getting the playing time. But, my God, he plays at least a foot shorter and half time time just doesn't put out the effort. Noah is all effort, he's going to be a good one if he can bulk up.
He plays like he had never seen a basketball until he came to the states, absolutely no instinctive moves offense or defense.

….and Robinson had 3 in 31 minutes….
When your 2 guard has 12 rebounds and your 3, 4 and 5 spots COMBINED have 12 rebounds…..something’s wrong
Listening to the post game show and Matt can be the densest smart person. He’s somewhat defending Pope by saying “I’m sure Pope is not telling Amari to not put his arms up, not to go after the loose ball” etc. Well yes Pope is because Pope continues to feed Armani minutes so Pope is condoning it.

Love Noah I’ve been wanting to see more of him than we have especially when guys like Robinson or Brea won’t fight
It’s not like any of them are defensive stoppers
I just want to see more competitive guys like Krissa Noah Oweh THE OLD Butler
I can stand mistakes but we got a bunch of soft dudes

Many poor individual performances today.
Amari - looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Don’t ever dribble and back down your defender. Shoot or pass immediately after receiving the ball. Points are not expected, rebounds and defense are.
Lamont - has he forgotten how to play? Some bench may be good for him also.
3. Ortega, Ansley, & Trent - hustled and a want to win today. Buy them an ice cream Coach!

Defense:
1. We cannot stop penetration, so we rotate to stop that player, but don’t rotate down resulting in a layup or dunk
2. Also we sag too much on penetration leaving 1-2 open behind the 3 point line. Every team has at least (2) 3-point shooters so you have to play more towards the shooters.
3. Most disappointing is the lack of hustle. Bench time could solve this problem.

Offense
1. We are not running the offense! How many back door buckets did we get. There were very few hard cuts today. More dribbling than passing.
2. Turnovers!!

What can CMP do?

You don’t hustle or play defense, you sit! .
Having UK on your uniform does not intimidate your opponent or guarantee a win.
Believe a mid-season correction is needed aka a butt chewing.
UT will pound us as they have tough players unless we get tough too in the next few days.

I still have the faith that this will be a good season. But you have to earn it.

Amari is so lazy on rebounding and defending under the basket. Stands there and doesn’t even put his arms up sometimes to try to alter a shot. Garrison isn’t a whole lot better. No excuses for those two not to average 20 rebounds a game combined with their size.

Bob Knight was an asshole but he was right about this:

But that was in a totally different era back when there was no transfer portal or NIL promises to deal with.

The coach/player balance of power has dramatically changed. Now benching one of your main guys more likely just means you lose him rather than motivate him.

But what is the loss? Amari is done after this year and his lack of effort is killing the team. Watch the lack of motion when he gets the ball at the top. It’s like the rest of the team is like what is the point.

We’ve had some starters here recently who have been really bad. Devin Askew, Lance Ware, Ryan Harrow, Brandon Boston, to name a few. Amari is right up there. This dude is comically bad at basketball.

There was one play that was especially baffling. Looked like he was in perfect position to easily swat away that little guard’s shot in the lane. But he didn’t even try, never even lifted his arms, just watched him make the layup.

If I were Pope, I’d make him rewatch that moment several times and let him know THAT can’t happen again.

He can’t protect the rim and has no touch around the rim
The biggest difference at this level is in the bigs. Amari doesn't get off the floor fast. He's in position to rebound and block shots, but just doesn't have the instincts to naturally react to the situation. Others are right. He doesn't play like his size says he should. It's probably why he ended up at Drexel instead of a P5. He's probably maximizing the talent that he has and ended up here. I used to work with a former lead recruiter at a D1. He said guard play wasn't much difference from a mid-major to a P5. He said it was the bigs that separated them. A whole lot more 6 feet people walking around than 6'10" people.

I'm at the point that I'd be fine with that, just have some player card (since they want to be treated like adults) that follows them around, that talks about player-coach disciplinary actions. That way there's consequences.

There is a reason Noah was committed to USC before, USC is a typical physical SEC team

I believe bodywise Noah is ready for Sec, just needs experience. Would not be surprised if he is starter level in year 3 or year 4
So, Noah is ready and will be a starter by the end of his college career? He already rebounds, plays better defense and shoots better than Anari.

I think Amari was so much bigger/stronger/more athletic than everyone at his previous conference, he didn't really have to try.

Now he's in the SEC with the same habits. And it's not working out. He's no longer head and shoulders above the competition. He's no better than the average SEC big man. So now you have to have that motor and out work everyone. He has none of that.

Noah's body still has some maturing to do, but I think a strong base and strength will be a plus for him; and playing off of two feet we hear so much about will fit him to a tee. If he puts in the work (which is true for any player) I believe he'll play a ton next season and good luck wrestling that SF spot from him as a Junior. He just shoots it too well, and he rebounds and fights.
