Travis Perry to the portal

Based on the guy I quoted who said this has happened since the dawn of time, which isn't true. 2,500 players have not been entering the portal year after year since the dawn of time. Guys like Hawkins and Willis used to stay in the same program, get better, and develop into a role in their later years- that doesn't happen anymore.

So no, this hasn't been happening "since the dawn of time".
When you had to sit out a year after transferring a lot less of it happened.

I disagree 1000%. For Kentucky born and raised kids it ABSOLUTELY means something to play for the name on the front of the jersey. He was KY Mr. Basketball and Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year AND he could've gone to Alabama, Cincy, WKU or Ole Miss and maybe gotten more playing time there, why didn't he then? Because of money? No. Because it IS different for a KY kid getting the chance to lace em up for the Wildcats. I don't buy the premise that KY boys come to UK just for the money, that's just nonsense. He'll always be a Cat and I wish him the best but to say money was a motivating factor in this instance is simply wrong.

Moreno and Johnson likely had better NIL deals on the table outside of Lexington but they stayed home to play for the Cats, why?
I will agree that the reason why a KY kid will come here initially out of high school is partly because of the name on the front of the jersey. That does not mean the name on the front makes them stay. In my post I said guys leave here for money or better playing time...this was 100% about more playing time.

The idea of sitting on the bench because of the name on the front of the jersey no longer mattered to Travis...after 1 year. A guy like Travis Perry would have 100% stayed under previous rules. I believe you have to go all the way back to Todd Zeigler (I think he was a scholarship player) in the mid 80's for the last time a Kentucky scholarship player transferred out of the program. In the past 5 years, we have had 3 scholarship players on the UK roster from the state of KY that didn't leave for the NBA draft....2 have transferred out. It's not the same. UK had 18 scholarship players who started their career here from the state of Kentucky the 35 year prior to the new rules....all 18 stayed. Not one transferred. Now, 2 of the last 3 have transferred out. They are not willing to stay here bc of the name on the front of the jersey. It's just different.

Would like to think he'd come back as a senior. Lets just hope the develops nicely at another school and comes back for 1 more season.
How many past transfers would you have liked to have seen come back for another year?
The players Cal took with him don't count.
Allen?
Askew?
Fletcher?
Collins?
Harrow?
Anthony?
Hogan?
Simmons?
Burks?
No on all for me
Bradley and Wiltjer are the only ones who come to mind in the last 30 years.

Popularity , investments , networking , business offers , never having to buy a drink, On and On BBN loves its own . But you know that , why ask ?
But is Perry really giving this stuff up? I don’t think so.

Transferring has become the new normal. There’s no longer a negative stigma attached to it. It’s no longer viewed as an an act of disloyalty. Perry is still gonna enjoy the popularity and perks simply for having once been a UK player (not to mention a high school superhero).

Not many usually they leave for a reason.

Perhaps I'm being unfair to Perry and his goal is ultimately to get as many minutes as possible. Being selfish and hoping he comes back as a senior and play 20 MPG may be a little wishy washy.

Couldn't the same be said about 95% of the transfer portal though? I don't like this transfer portal jackassery as much as the next guy but its the times, the rules that are changing and I don't begrudge a single player for improving their situation with more playing time or money. We can disagree on the meaning of Kentucky on the jersey for some but not for homegrown kids IMO. The other KY kids that stayed could have very likely gone somewhere else had they been able to.

Being KY's high school scoring champ does not necessarily make you a high level D1 player on a team focused solely on winning a national championship. Pope and Perry are just being honest with each other and this outcome was inevitable.

The KY kids who stayed in those 35 years were able to go elsewhere and sit out a year, they chose not to. In those 35 years that I mentioned when we had 18 KY guys and none of them transferred...37 out of state scholarship players transferred and sat out a year. One would assume that the reason the 18 KY kids didn't transfer was because it was more important for them to stay and wear the UK jersey where the other 37 didn't care about that. Well, now KY kids don't care about that either. I know some like the fairy tail of the KY kid playing for their home state..I'm just telling you, that fairy tail is over under the new rules.

There was zero need to push Perry out. With Perry, we had 13 scholarship players. With the new rules, we still had 2 scholarships available.

Anyone we take at this point has to be willing to accept a specific role. They're coming to develop this year. Maybe play next year. If Perry was willing to do that, a coach isn't going to run him out of town to HOPE to find 3 more guys that will accept that role.

I fully believe Pope and Perry talked. Perry knew he wasn't going to see the floor this year. He's not in line to start, EVER. Jasper is younger than Perry. Chandler is in the same class as Perry. Certainly, we'll keep bringing in more talented players at the guard spots. I believe Perry was aware of his situation and decided to go where he had an eaiser path to minutes.

But I also believe he had the option to stay, knowing he wouldn't play.

I don't really lose a lot of sleep over the whole Kentucky kid thing. It's like adding peanuts to a sundae. It's a nice addition to the whole thing. But the ice cream, hot fudge, and whip cream are just fine without it.

I want Kentucky to win championships. That's really the only box I'm looking to check. If the players ALL come from New York or California or wherever, I'm good. Just get the winning done. It's a nice little bonus if we have a kid or a few kids from Kentucky that play a meaningful role.

I read these posts like "MARK POPE ISN'T GOING TO EVER HAVE PEANUTS FOR THE SUNDAE'S." But realize, we went out and got better ice cream. We got better hot fudge. We got better whipped cream. The whole sundae is FAR better than it was. Let's not cry over some peanuts.

So please explain to me how the homegrown Kentucky effect was of no consequence when Johnson and Moreno made their decision to stay at home.

Jasper Johnson "Though Alabama and North Carolina heavily recruited him, Johnson said it was simple: Kentucky is "where my heart was really at" as he sifted through his options. "I always wanted to be able to play for the University of Kentucky," he said.

Malachi Moreno committed to the University of Kentucky (UK) because "growing up in Kentucky, you always wanted to put on that Kentucky uniform," he said. He stated that "just being able to go there and wear 'Kentucky' across my chest means the world to me," adding that it was "a feeling" that he wanted to play for the Wildcats. The other schools that offered him a basketball scholarship were Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Hyperbole? I think not. We'll just agree to disagree.

My hope is he develops somewhere and transfers back to Kentucky once his game is elevated enough.

I think staying home and playing for the team you grew up cheering for can still matter when other things are pretty equal. If we’re being honest though, Johnson and Moreno project as higher level players than Perry. They have a realistic path to playing time at Kentucky.

What we’re probably going to see a huge decrease in with the portal is players willing to get 4 years of mop up minutes just for the privilege of wearing a jersey when they could actually play meaningful minutes somewhere else.

Not a bad choice but I'll take Diabate over him
I was just responding to the question, which was "how many past transfers would you like to see come back? " I didn't see where it was a return player OR Dioubate. Yeah, I should certainly go with Mo D.

Perry is not an effective PG ... Shooting Guard has always been his primary position. At his height, if he plays SG along side a proto-typical PG, that creates a front court of two (2) shorter players ... which can be a serious defensive match-up problem most of the time, as most teams will have shooting guards that are at least 6'3" or so. Every player who is a shooter cannot play PG effectively. The best case in point is Tony Delk. Pitino tried hard to make him a PG, but it didn't work and he left him at the 2-guard for get buckets.

GOOD LUCK to Travis Perry and I sincerely hope he finds a situation that fits him and makes him happy during his collegiate career !!!
