Updated 05/15/2024 - to include top-rated players not found on top-150 lists

This is a counterargument to Warf2012's argument that we missed on too many good players. @1war posted the Rivals transfer rankings that I think are better than the 247 sports rankings in the former post. I have done the work to put together the top 125 players in the 247sports.com based on Player Efficiency Ratings (PER), Offensive Rating per 100 possessions (ORtg), Defensive Ratings per 100 possessions (DRtg), and Overall Efficiency Rating (OERtg). OERtg is my own stat, which I arrive at by subtracting DRtg from ORtg which shows the difference between a player's excellence on offense and defense, demonstrating their overall effectiveness on both ends of the floor.

Without further ado:

Nice analysis and it shows they are quality players.

Excellent analysis.

I like the fact that Pope recruited these guys with a specific plan in mind. He's bringing in players who fit his system not just players based on AAU stats.

We will be good both offensively and defensively.

I'm excited to see this develop into a super good team!

You valdated my wish list. Lanier and Toppin are at the top of my wish list. Devion Smith was at the top of my list, but I don't think he is comming and Lanier is a better player.

In case there was any doubt, JT Toppin is an absolute stud.

I believe there is too much concern here over a player’s portal ranking. The numbers are flawed because teams do not play the same competition. For instance, DJ Wagner would have better numbers if he had played for a school in the Southern Conference. The key to success in the portal will be coaches that know how to select the right guys and how to play them together as a team

Can you tell us where they rank by position?

Seeing this list makes sense of Pope accepting Garrison's commitment so quickly. There were basically two left on the board, and Osobor was non-committal and Garrison wanted to be here.

Serious question - is 7 of the top 125 good, bad, something we should be excited about, or be disappointed in?

I know we had to rebuild an entire roster but it doesn’t seem like a top 25 type team to me.

I don't think that line of thinking is correct. While metrics can't fully account for "lack of competition," these are the numbers based on how they would compute across the board. I have been looking at these numbers quite a bit, and there is nothing to suggest that players moving from Mid-Majors to Power Conferences show any sort of measurable significance.

For example, Antonio Reeves numbers stayed the same from Ill. State to UK, Dalton Knecht's numbers went up offensively and defensively, only his PER sliding a bit, but his PER numbers were astronomical at Northern Colorado. Hunter Dickinson's only dropped slightly on offense from Michigan to Kansas, and defensively he was a better player this year than in year's past.

Also, we are getting Garrison, Oweh, Carr, and Kriisa from Power conferences (Big 12 and ACC), Lamont Butler has played on a team into the championship game and other NCAA tournament games, and Brea and Amari Williams, I can only assume, were the attention of every team playing against Dayton and Drexel, and yet they still managed significant numbers.

Well, it's actually 7 out of the top 115. Considering there are 362 teams, and one team got 6% of the top 115 transfers available, I'd say it's pretty good.

This doesn't account for those players who didn't transfer (if there actually are any) or incoming freshmen.

I will say that I think we are lacking an offensive weapon or two. It's almost certain that we will add another SF, probably Jaylen Wells, Jaxson Robinson, or both. If I could make a wish and get a player it would be JT Toppin. He's both offensive firepower and a defensive menace. He's not a three point threat, so we would need to add one more for that void, but Toppin seems to be a beast. Again, this is not accounting for Collin Chandler or Travis Perry.

Give me two of the following five and I think we're a top 5-10 team:

JT Toppin
Jaylen Wells
Jaxson Robinson
Chaz Lanier
Wooga Poplar

If we were to land Toppin and Lanier, I would argue we'd be the best team in the country. I made it bold just in case CMP is reading.

Brea’s game will translate fine. Williams I’m not completely convinced. I’ve watched a couple of full Drexel games on YouTube now and he is always the biggest player on the court compared to the other team’s 5. Good news he knows how to use his size so early in the season and against small teams he gonna be great. So either way he’s going to be effective but maybe not as dominant as people are expecting. He’s got athleticism vertically but his horizontal movement wasn’t quick. Not sure if that could be improved with conditioning.

I’m not commenting to be negative just looking at the stats you posted and thinking we might not be getting that but we are getting a good player.

Can you explain a little more how this stat is calculated for a player? It sounds like this is saying the player’s own defensive efficiency rating is subtracted from his own offensive efficiency rating. But that would be a useless statistic and meaningless to say the least.

It is subtracting their own ORtg from their DRtg. If their offense is high and their defense is low it creates the larger number, meaning they are more effective on both ends of the floor rather than on just one end.

For example, Antonio Reeves' ORtg is 129.2, demonstrating a high offensive efficiency. His DRtg is 109.6, which is below average (the avg. for portal players is 107.4). When I subtract his defensive efficiency from his offensive efficiency I get 19.6. In this case, Reeves' ORtg makes up for his defensive deficiency giving him a pretty high OERtg.

Kerr Kriisa will be my negative example. His ORtg is 106 (this was is 2023-24 rating), and his DRtg is 116 (well below the 107.7 avg. for a PG). His OERtg comes out to -10, because while his offense is slightly below average, his defense is well below average.

What OERtg does is account for those players who are only doing work on one end of the floor. Now, that doesn't mean those players lack value, but I would rather have a player with high numbers on both end of the floor (high being low for defense numbers).

Oh, okay, thank you. What I wasn’t getting was that the defensive rating number gets lower as the player’s defense gets better. This makes it clear.

Thanks for this, and for all your work!

What I got from this information is that Pope went heavily on defense knowing his offensive schemes will get better shots for his guys.
He did get very high percentile catch and shoot guys in Brea and Kriis. I’m curious to know how Oweh and Butler did in catch and shoot situations vs off the bounce.

Saying that our coach is going to scheme guys open is such a nice change of pace.

He definitely went defense heavy. Now, part of that, I think, is that by the time he got here most of the cupboard was bear for Centers. Right now, only Osobor is left (I suppose it's arguable that he's a PF, but 247 has him as a C). I think he swept up Garrison because Garrison was the best available that was a certainty.

If I'm Mark Pope, my only thought now is a distributor and/or scorer. A "go get me a bucket" kind of guy. At the end of the day I think we end up with either Jaylen Wells or Jaxson Robinson or both. Either of those guys could be that guy.
