Not sure if anyone else seen this. Katz just showed a conversation with Cal. He said they were in the car after visiting a recruit and Barbee told him to ride this out. Stay as long as you can at UK and think of all the players that will be in the NBA and possible All Star Game. I know Cal mentioned about players in all start game but didn't know Barbee said that to him.

UK is already actively involved with 2018 players. I'd say Cal will be here for a while.

True but you have to recruit years from now eventhough you think you might retire in 3 or 4 years. Just relaying what I just saw on Katz's conversation he had with him on ESPN.

Anyone who thinks Cal wants to retire soon hasn't been paying attention (and no, I'm not addressing your position on this, as I don't know what you think about it).

Cal loves to influence, and he loves to be in the spotlight. Retirement means obscurity and no influence. He's going to be at UK for a while.

He has like 7 years left on his contract. He said a 10 year old said he wants to play for him at Kentucky, but he told him something like he wouldn't be playing for him. That would be like 8 years. So he makes it sound like he will be gone by the time his contract is up. I would love to get more years with him here than that, but 13 years total wouldn't be to bad.

Hopefully he can get at least 2 more titles before he is gone. That would still put us 1 behind UCLA, but at least we would be in striking distance for the next coach. I don't see him getting 3 titles in 7 years. Hopefully he stays longer than that and wins 4 more to pass them up.

Thought Cal said couple weeks back he was coaching much longer than he initially thought.

maybe we can't get 3 more in seven years, but it's not too unreasonable to think we could either. we nearly had 3 in 3 years---'96, '97, '98. i'd love to see cal be the coach at uk to tie/bust ucla's record. we've been knocking on the door every year he's been here except '13.

It appears more and more that's exactly what Cal may do. If he can keep this up say another 10 years it's certainly possible he could wind up with multiple national titles, and UK could have a shot at catching UCLA in overall titles under his watch. Something he has said he'd like to do. As he's seen though those titles are elusive. He'll probably need a bunch more seasons to get it done. So yea, by all means ride it out for all it's worth!

As long as he is here we will be a top 5 team in the country. Every few years we will be the favorite. We just have to capitalize on opportunities. We aren't far off from having 3 titles in his first 6 years. 2010 and 2015 was clearly the best team in the nation. 2014 made a historic run and was the superior team in the title matchup but got out played with JR being 50-70%. 2011 was the weakest of those chances but had we beat UConn we have a 50/50 game with Duke for all the marbles.

That's 1 title, 2 more teams that should have walked away with a title but got caught on a bad night, and two losses to Uconn- one of which injuries played a role in.

Honestly, worse case we should probably have 9 realistically and fail short with the opportunities we've had . 10 titles at this point is probably the best we could have hoped for since winning some of those years would change who came back and left.

Yep. JMHO, but I think we're over the hump of the Cal-to-NBA situation. If anything, I think Cal will look ahead to his influence and spotlight possibilities in the political arena... maybe a seat in the U.S. Senate?

Now, if Anthony Davis ends up with the Bulls in a couple years with a solid supporting cast, and LeBron decides to join him for the swan song of his career... then, I'll worry about the NBA again!

I'm sure Coach Cal realized this before Tony B. said it. I think he's trying to give some love/respect to Tony.

Coach Cal isn't stupid...hes going to 4 final fours in 5 years with different team each time. He's realized there's nothing stopping from repeating this (maybe 3 in 5 years..which is still insane...)

Also UK marketing is getting bigger and bigger. Coach K is copying it for a reason.

And Coach K is significantly older, meaning that whenever he steps down, Cal's recruiting would probably get even better being that he'd be the elder statesman of college hoops.

I now believe cal will be here to retire. He's young, passionate, and in a position to make K worry. He's got it all right now. Leaving would make Cal as dumb as those before him. Pitino, Spurrier etc..., their careers are never the same. Cal is just too smart for it.

He will retire around 2022 after his contract. He will have countless final fours, 3 national titles, and will consider a new contract because the class of 2023 is stacked for us.

Cal said he told a kid that was 10 he "wouldn't be Playing for him."

That would be 2023........ A year after the contract is up

Like any talented, powerful person, Cal is constantly tugged in different directions to do different things.

Coach K has flirted with the NBA as well. And there is no question that K's game slipped a couple of notches about a decade ago.

But K satisfied his itch through an affiliation with USA Basketball. Probably not coincidentally, he has gone through a resurgence of late.

No telling what Cal will do. Life is short, and he is no doubt measuring how he can have the most impact - get the most done - in his remaining years.

There is a strong and valid argument that he can have no greater impact than he is enjoying under his current platform.

But you could say the same about Pat Riley when he was coaching the Lakers, and to a lesser degree, the Knicks. Now Riley has had arguably as much success as an executive as he did as a coach.

There is no question that Cal is looking at some other nearby mountains and wondering if can climb them. Wondering if he should try. That spirit is what makes guys like Cal great in the first place.

i actually think Coach K's benefiting a lot from UNC's scandal right now. I think he would lose 1/2 players annually if UNC had no issue happening.

^^ all these studs out of North Carolina are going to Duke and UK.

UNC Is no longer the place of the pros. That title died for them when cal took over. Wall, Ingram, etc...... UNC is missing the boat for the future.

that's my point. Couple of NC studs could have gone to UNC instead of Duke. UK was getting top talent even before UNC's issue, Duke was not. Part of it was because Coach K's strategy was different. But, had UNC not had any issue...UNC would be battling more with Duke in regards to recruits around the area. Ingram for example could very well have gone to UNC. Then this year's class would be really bad for Coach K.

Cal has changed his position multiple times, and I really feel it will come down to whether he still likes what he's doing in a few years.

He said the comment about the 10 year old kid, but he's also said he would like to coach until he's 70, and also said this is only a ten year job... unless we're doing some truly "extraordinary" as a program!

So which option should we believe? LOL

Again, I think he'll ride it out and see how he feels toward the end of the contract. He's basically made statements that can go in any direction, which is wise considering that he knows we hang on his every word.

BUT HE SAID LAST NIGHT HE CONVERSATED WITH A 10 YEAR OLD ABOUT COACHING HIM? MATH NEVER LIES!

JUST LIKE HE RECRUITED SKAL SO THERES NO CHANCE HE DOESNT CLEAR!

I live in rafters world.

Another thing about Cal is that he lives in the moment. He still doesn't fully trust his success, imo.

What I mean by that is that he is not the kind of guy to get comfortable and rest on his laurels.

I suspect that won't allow himself to think he will still be here having success a decade from now.

He wasn't born into opportunity. Nothing has ever been given to him. The only way he knows to operate is with his back against the wall, one day at a time. Keeps him sharp, adaptable, and ultimately on top.

This is a great point.

It's requiring the GOAT college coach (or second to Wooden) to keep up with Cal as 1a/1b star coach in CBB.

When K goes, there will be one coach that everyone turns to watch walk in at AAU events like the president is coming through. There won't be a close second, either.

No doubt, but Cal won't take a risk without calculating it's potential reward. He's not as impulsive as Pitino. If the reward doesn't match the risk, he'll maintain his position at Kentucky.

Sure. But that is about perception. I obviously have no clue what he might do over the next few years. Neither does anybody else. I hope he stays forever, but I understand that he is going to keep his eyes open.

It would be nice if Cal got to coach the USA basketball team. I think that might be one of his goals and it might satisfy his urge for NBA coaching. Plus he might be able to coach more than a few of his players on that team!! Does anyone know if they decide on a new coach or is it Coach K's till he wants to step down from it??? With Cal making Hall Of Fame maybe it will help get a shot now.

Until the last year or two, I assumed he'd be here until the right NBA offer came around. When the Bulls and Cavs jobs opened up and he passed on them, I became a believer that he'd be here until he's done. I hope he's here till he's 80.

If he was here until he was 80, he'd have put about 100 guys into the league, and about half of them would be the type of guys who earn recognition among the league's upper-echelon.

If he stayed even until he was 70, I think they would build a new Arena and name it after Calipari. By then, he'd probably have 1 or 2 more titles and 6 or 7 more Final Fours, putting UK at 9 or 10 titles combined and 23 or 24 Final Four appearances historically.

"Calipari Court" would be simple and fitting.

K represents one gigantic road block, on more ways than one. When he finally steps down, I'll literally throw a champagne party.

K will retire when the NCAA lets him retire.

K has no decision in his retirement. NCAA does.

And you need to stop reading into things when they aren't there.

Cal is relatively young considering how long some of these coaches coach. ITS ALL RELATIVE. man, you arent doing so well lately Sosa.

I said UNC is no longer the place of the pros. They aren't getting Ingram. They didn't get Wall. They are missing their biggest professional prospects in decades out of their own state. For those of us old enough to remember when UNC was known for the place where the pros want to play, we are enjoying seeing it die.

You realize in order to find issue with my statements, you must take a half ass approach to my words and read exactly what you want, which means you wanted to bicker. Judging by your latest threads, you really are looking for it. Everyone else understood completely. Come on man, don't be that guy.

Certainly he's not going to leave anytime soon without a second title. One doesn't set you apart much at all
and it really takes 3 to move into some special territory.

I apologize

I will have to take a year or two off of basketball when Cal eventually retires. We are spoiled beyond description with him as a coach. Talk about a golden age... this run is unreal with all the insane talent we have been treated to. Incredible.
