Tom Leach RE: Askew

Cal’s Runts - Askew, Mintz, Boston, Clarke, Brooks
That would never ever ever be the starting line up but that might use that line up here and there. the starting line up IMO will be

Askew Clarke Boston Brooks ( those 4 starters are locked in ) with Jackson the starting center unless we add someone like Sarr . Noting runty about that line up 6'3 6'7 6'7 6'8 6'9 . Hell we only have 2 people on the roster under 6'7 . Askew and Mintz. Tallest team Cal has ever had on average minus the 2015 team. We just need some beef. But then again every single team has a weakness.

There will be a real battle between Mintz and Askew for that spot. Especially early. Think we’ll be good with both.

Yeah, I like the idea of the veteran starting at first at least. I think Mintz will take care of the ball and be ok with passing it to our studs/scorers. Not saying Askew won't be ok with that but as the PG that is what you need to do and not try to be the hero like some who have been in that position.

Mintz started for a Top 25 -level team in a conference that was top-to-bottom better in basketball than the SEC.

I'm actually pretty encouraged if Leach has done some research and has concluded people who know what they are talking about think Askew is clearly a better option than Mintz from Day One.

The issue I see with that is, Askew could be cutting his teeth against those early 'cupcakes' and getting that experience instead of getting thrown is as the starter when conf play starts. But, then again, minutes are min, I guess.

He looks like a guy who is really skilled but lacks athleticism. His jump shot looks like he is going to be lights out from what I have seen.

I can see it going either way.

I respect Tom. That said, I thought other players would come in and be stars that didn’t live up to it.

Often times those kids have zero competition so they start by default.

Mintz is a legit option at Pg. He started at a big time program and played against legit college competition. Askew hasn’t been on a college court.

Askew may come in and be awesome. He may also struggle.

Let's say Leach is correct and Askew is an above-average KENTUCKY caliber starting point guard.

Suddenly, the Cats are a surprise addition at the 5 from being a pretty formidible team, 2 or even 3 deep at every position:

Askew Mintz
Boston Mintz/Allen
Clarke Allen/Fletcher/
Brooks Ware/Jackson/Toppin
? Jackson/Ware

Starting Mintz early makes no sense...if Askew starts by conference play.

We start off the season playing mid-major teams. Teams where we have a large margin for error. Why not let him start against the weak teams to build his confidence up and see what he's got and get him ready for SEC play.

Instead of just bumping his play time once we hit the harder portion of the schedule...just let him get experience early on.

Don’t care what you call him. A PG to me is the one who brings the ball up the court and facilitates the offense. Which is what he did at Creighton. And he did it very well.
Yep. Know who the PG for the Lakers is? Lebron. Even though he’s typically listed as a SF.

Lebron was leading the league in assists, and yet either Avery Bradley or Rajon Rondo started at point guard. Point forward has been a thing for decades.
Lebron brings the ball up and initiates offense 90% of the time. Had the ball in his hands. He’s the PG.

He did his sophomore year...but his Junior year they moved him off the ball where they felt he was more effective. They said he made bad decisions and was a shot first type of point...so they put him off the ball for defense and to score.

If Darius Perry from UofL transferred here...would we start him because he's started point guard before? No...because we've seen him and know him better. We just haven't seen Mintz and just assume he's a great ball handler..he isn't.

Mintz is the starter to begin the season, but by SEC play Askew takes over.

You beat me to it, playing early and learning the system in real time is invaluable. Mints is a back up plan. Good to have experience to fall back on. I think Boston could even plug in at the point if needed in short spurts. If Allen is healthy and Boston and Askew are as good of shooters as advertised along with Clark's slashing ability this could be a fun and good team.

People seem to forget that Cal plays Positionless basketball. Who cares who brings the ball up the floor, we run the weave every play before we try to score.

Don't be obtuse. What does combo mean, in this context?
