...5 fouls and your out rule.

Here is my suggestion:

Each player is allowed two fouls per half.

The third foul on a player in a half means they're disqualified for that half.

It beats the current system.

Look, basketball is much more physical than it was when the 5 fouls and out rule was implemented, so it's way past time to adjust the rules accordingly IMO

Basketball isn't half as physical as it was 20 years ago and no it wouldn't matter if you gave players 30 fouls, it's not going to change the fact a player is going to foul.

All this talk about 6 fouls is to try and help the lazy, or bad calls which the change would have zero effect on. Changing for the sake of changing is never a good ideal.

Sorry I brought it up.

The stupid thing about "5/6 fouls and you're out" is the control it gives officials to disqualify a player from a game.

Yellow/Red cards in soccer are similar, but theoretically, it should be clear why you are receiving the card (even though we know that isn't true in application all the time).

The holding penalty in football is probably the main penalty applied with discretion that allows refs to control that game.
Throw in added ability for refs to influence disqualifications via targeting penalties, and football has become a very difficult game for refs not to control.

Baseball has the Ball/strike issue. But at least we know that in most (all now, maybe?) stadiums, the Questec machines are scoring the umps' accuracy.
And replay in that sport is probably more accurate and effectively used than it is in football/basketball.

Golf. Now that's a pure sport. Just the athlete and the course.

I believe the problem is the officiating and I am with you on trying to do something to try to take that out. If they would call it the same way on both ends, but we are dealing with human element and you have no idea what they are thinking, but they could be held accountable. A argument could sure be made that a outside source can determine the outcome of a game (NCAA or Gambling) that needs to be removed.

If they have the players 8 fouls that would just mean teams would have players all in foul trouble with 7.

I believe one of the best fixes is to make it harder for teams to get in the bonus. This takes things out of the hands of referees. For instance, there is nothing more frustrating than when a team is going on a run and they are looking to make a stand on the defensive end only for a referee to call some tic tac foul, suck all the air out of the building, and give a team free chances at points on the free throw line. This takes that away from them. If they call a foul it's right back to taking it out in the side, and if they keep calling it...their disruption of flow will be obvious. It should change their focus on what they call.

True.

It just seemed every time I looked up one of our main players was on the bench with two early fouls.

Frustrating, especially in the UNC game when we played a lot of the first half with our three leading scorers on the bench. Who knows how many points we could of been up at halftime, instead of being down by 4 points.

Personally if they removed the ability to bet on amatuer sports I'd be happy. When there is as much $ changing hands as there is on games, I'll never believe there is integrity...especially when refs and broke players have so much to possibly gain.

I like the idea of not fouling out and losing possession, however there would have to be some penalty for fouling at some point, otherwise you could have a 6 point lead with 2 minutes left and pull some Dean Smith horsecrap - just keep fouling the other team before they can shoot. It would drag the game out but you could play it out to where they never scored again, or would take some horrible shot in desperation just to get a shot off without being hacked.

Maybe its time to give the coaches a red flag like in the NFL. Give them the ability to throw it once a half and go to replay. Force the refs to agree ahead of time that if an obvious call - like a walk is missed or a charge is called, they have to reverse it based on the letter of the rule.

That way you take away the power of refs to control the game.

The cheating, gambling controlled refs use 2 fouls and you sit bullcrap every game. They will never allow that edge to be removed from college basketball. Money will trade hands to make sure it stays at 5 fouls a game.
You can take down any team you want with enough foul calls in the first half on the best players and defenders. 8 fouls on the top 4 players within the first 12 minutes will beat any team most likely. Just 8 little fouls.

Nothing will fix bad officiating, and the fact that they don't even acknowledge the problem means we're stuck with it for a while.

If you were going to change it, I say you leave it at 5, and every personal foul after that is treated as an intentional--two shots and the ball.

The player gets to stay in the game, but there's an added penalty for fouls he commits.

And how do you propose to do that? Legal sports betting is a drop in the bucket in the world of betting.

Up to six fouls

Take away single bonus leaving only two shots after 10th foul

Give coaches one challenge per game

Make refs answer for calls at a post conference just like coaches and players have to answer for their play and decisions

Fixes everything.

Six fouls per game.

10 minute quarters. Reset fouls at the start of each quarter.

Should speed up the game and keep the best players on the floor with the extra foul.

fix the officiating, 5 fouls is enough. make NCAA refs accountable for calls, make them have a presser after the game, the NCAA needs to stop backing the ones that are clearing deciding the out come of games, it will hit them where it hurts the most...their wallet. until then we are going to get the same ol same ol

there is no point for college basketball to have its own special rules not found in other forms of basketball.

6 fouls
4 10-12 minute quarters
in the bonus (2 FTs) after the 5th foul
