"Tim Donaghy knows a thing or two about influencing the outcome of NBA games by means of officiating. The disgraced former NBA referee was busted in 2007 for betting on games he officiated as a means to come out ahead.

The next year, Donaghy alleged the NBA had instructed referees to extend the Western Conference Finals between the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers in 2002, among other instances, as a means to influence how long the series went. Ultimately, the Kings ended up losing to the Lakers in Game 7 after a ridiculously one-sided officiating performance by the refs in Game 6, which the Lakers won.

Many people saw Game 4 of the current NBA Finals as a game officials purposefully controlled so as to extend the series, Draymond Green’s mother included.

And according to Donaghy, that’s going to continue in Game 5 Monday night.

Dohaghy says the officials will probably make sure Green ends up in foul trouble early. He also concludes the NBA is going to do everything in its power to get the series back to Cleveland for Game 6, if not ensure it does everything possible to extend the series to seven games. He points to the ridiculous money ESPN paid for the rights to broadcast NBA games. Obviously, if the series is extended, it means more revenue for the league and the broadcasting company.

Whether you buy that story or not is up to you. However, given the way Game 4 was officiated so much differently than the rest of the series between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, we’re not willing to dismiss Donaghy’s allegations out of hand.

Game 5 tips off at 9 p.m. ET at Oracle Arena Monday night. The Warriors currently lead 3-1."

This series is such a mismatch that if a ref can extend the series they deserve a raise. It's amazing enough that it won't be a sweep.

The officiating has gone heavily in favor of the whining Steve Kerrs... err Warriors.

I want him to start commenting on college bball officiating. Let's get some of these canaries to start singing!!

These teams lost a combined 1 game to get to the Finals but now the NBA is calling for extra games?

NBA is corrupt man. $$$$ if they can get this series last another week to make a billion they will
But there would be no sweeps ever if they were fixing games. They wouldve made a ton of money off of a GSW-Spurs game 5, 6, and 7 and a Cavs-C's game 6 and 7.

I dont buy that it's a full blown fix. So that should stop replies from the geoup that calls everything a conspiracy that they dont agree with.

Having said that i do believe there's corruption in the NBA. A reasonable mind can gather that much especially if you have some years on you. I dont fully buy that there's a vast effort to extend games, simply because a coverup of that size should expose itself in time. Its 2017 so there's little chance we wouldnt know, and one corrupt official whos bet on his job isnt enough to go on.

To the point, officials arent dumb. Theres probably a human element in most of them where they realize its good business if games extend. The way the format is set up makes it easy to allow for a series to move on, just by the home and away structure. Home teams get calls.

Not even close. The finals has way more pub than the rest of the playoffs

They're only going to let ZaZa have one dick punch before throwing him out tonight and not wipe away any of Draymond's technicals.

Then they're going to make 25 3's for Cleveland just to be safe.

Higgins knows how to fix games. Get him on the payroll before he hopefully goes to prison.

LeBron was fouled in the face, should have been Durant's third and a flagrant, but no whistle. Odd strategy for a game the refs are trying to extend.

Yep, and he's killed the Cavs the last several minutes.

Maybe he had money on GS so he came out with this today to keep the refs from going for the Cavs.

Everybody else is playing checkers...

J/k. Sort of.

Game 6 was some BS (really, it was the fourth Q) in 2002, but game 5 was terrible the other way.

How does the NBA make more money in this scenario? TV rights are already bought and paid for. Is it ABC doing the corrupting?

Shh! They'd have made another billion if this had gone seven games. And they have the power and control to fix games, they just chose not to make an extra billion because LeBron is a choker. But everything MJ did was legit even though he had massive gambling ties.

The NBA makes more money the more games are played, but it isn't anything close to a billion dollars. Millions, sure.

The direct "how" is a cut of the gate, a cut of ticket resales, merchandise, etc.

The indirect how is more exposure for the league, bringing better value to media partners ( with whom they will be negotiating future contracts).

C'mon Gonzo, everybody knows the "Jordan had ties to gambling" theory is completely unfounded -- doesn't every superstar at the height of his powers walk away from his sport to hover at the Mendoza Line of a sport he hadn't played since he was a kid? Geesh.

The Warriors stood to make somewhere between $11-$22m for another home game. But the Warriors are not the NBA, and I think they would have rather closed out in 4 then risk defeat (especially after last year). Are people arguing that the Warriors sabotaged themselves?

The NBA signed a 9 year TV deal in 2014. Are you telling me the NBA is going to risk the integrity of the game - and all the financial loss if it gets out - to extend a series because of contract negotiations that will begin in earnest in 2022? Just typing that out destroyed 100 of my brain cells.

You asked how the NBA makes more money, and I answered it.

But if you want to put words in my mouth...

And putting aside discussion about whether games are rigged (or influenced, nudged in a certain direction), do you really not think there is value to the NBA in their championship series going a full 7 games?

Not trying to put words in your mouth, but the Warriors are not the NBA. So tickets/concessions/gate revenue doesn't do anything for the NBA.

And of course there is value in long, compelling series. But there's a risk/reward ratio to consider, and the reward is pretty minimal when they're locked in re: media rights for 6 years.

NBA gets a cut of tickets and merchandise, so there is an impact, although not large.

The value of a compelling, all eyes on us, seven game series trumps the few million in extra revenue the league generates at the venue, imo.

But we are only talking about one series here. Multiplied across the whole playoffs, the number is bigger.

Not to mention owners of teams who may not make the playoffs as often want to cash in on every nickel. What's good for the owners is good for the league.

This all started as a thread about the NBA instructing refs to cheat. I don't think that directly happens. But I think directives are issued that influence refs to call games in a way that is likely to favor one team over the other.

I don't think the league/refs determine the outcome, but I think there are clearly times when their actions influence the outcome and that this is sometime premeditated.
