This offensive line..

So….

We’ve protected Leary fine. He needs to get rid of the ball when more than five are sent.

Running the ball we are averaging over five yards a carry and 131 yards per game.

The only nit pick I have is we tend to hit chunk runs and not sustain at times ..and we are a penalty heavy unit. But that unit is less of an inside then Qb and Wr units
Playing Akron and Eastern.

4 games played
3 sacks total allowed by UK O lline
5.6 yards per rushing attempt
To Leary's credit, he's done a great job keeping that number down either by having incredible pocket presence or just throwing the ball away.

The line has potential, but allowing 1-3 defenders into the backfield as much as they do is a lot for Leary. It's frustrating because on top of missing assignments, our line was just manhandled by Vandy's DLine at times. I remember at least one play where our lineman was just pushed straight back into Leary. Another where I can only assume the LG was supposed to carry the DE into a double team and the LT switch to the blitzing corner. Man came away free. Then there are the penalties....There's potential, but for now we're a mess.

I personally don't put much stock in our team's rushing yards per because of how bimodal the data are. Average US income is skewed because of the rich. Median paints a much clearer picture, and I would argue mode could tell us a lot as well about this team. If anything, I think the average tells the story of our running's feast and famine nature – rip off a 40 yarder then get stopped at or behind the line twice. Bust off a 12 yard gain and then get one yard the next play.

I'm still holding out hope that Yenser can right this ship and that we will improve drastically when we gel and get Horsey back. We are leaps and bounds better than last year in certain OL stats, but how much of that improvement is OC scheme, or having an experienced QB with pocket presence, or improved play from linemen? I think we'll start teasing out the answer in SEC play. The meat of the schedule is here. Let's see how we respond.

Too many rushing attempts where we get nothing. Our rushing stats are skewed because we have played three cupcake opponents and the worst team in the SEC. We are either a home run or nothing right now when running the ball. We can't keep having negative plays and getting behind the chains.

Tonight Stoops not real happy with our guard play on either side. Left side doing 'OK, but needs to get better.' Right side needs to get 'much rougher and continue getting better.'

Burton again lol . At what point do they sit him, period? No more trying to hide him, just sit him. Where is Bowles??

We lost 2 O Lineman to injury before the season began. Yenser had a disastrous year last year. We are a little better this year and at least there is a little more chemistry between Coen and Yenser. Last year there was no leadership from the OC or Yenser for the OL scheme... I am almost positive that if we don't see a little more improvement for the Oline going forward, we will be looking for a more dynamic Oline coach. I am hoping we get better as the season progresses, but hope isn't much of a strategy.

The staff clearly sees something we don't since they're pushing Burton and not Bowles. I want the kid to start flying as much as the next fan, but the fact of the matter is that the guy needs to learn at some point.

Stoops has said repeatedly that what Burton needs most of all is reps, which tells me that Burton practices extremely well and it just hasn't translated to games yet. Just my 2¢. No idea where Horsey or Bowles is, but we have to make do with what works given the current personnel.

If he practices well and it doesn't translate to the game then that is in his own head.

Not sure more reps and more in game mistakes will cure that.

Maybe he is just that..... .a great practice player, and nothing else.

Struggling for multiple years at multiple positions isn't a good sign.

Rewa
To be clear I don't think the O line has been great. Worlds better than last year. Not as good as 2016-2021. But pass blocking anyway is improved.

Maybe against Florida we get Horsey back, Eli gets more comfortable back at C. Perhaps Ray should stay in, at RG in place of Jagger?
Watched Vandy game several times. Was honestly surprised to see Jagger do very well run blocking. He got big movement often. As an example on first TD run of game Jagger moved his man 5 or 6 yards away from the side of the run.

Really think everyone needs to watch the Vandy game again. Burton wasn't perfect but he did a GREAT job on several of our best runs.

I thought Burton played pretty well at Vandy. Ray on the other hand was continually getting pushed into the back field and didn’t seem to be able to move his guy very often.

Jager was definitely BETTER at guard instead of center, and he blocked better on some run plays against Vandy, but CMS knows his play is still not good enough to pass/run block against Florida's huge DLine.

Might want to listen to CMS on his thoughts concerning OLine, especially both guard positions, going into the Florida game.

We have to get better real quick or Devin Leary will be in a world of hurt Saturday and run game will be non-existent.

More reps will absolutely cure the issue. If it's a mental block or something just isn't translating 100%, then the only way he'll get better is putting rubber to the road and matching up with opposition.

Burton has played under two OCs, and the general consensus that we heard from interviews is that Scangarello's assignments were too complex, so last year should be considered a wash. Coen is a known commodity, so I trust that he and Stoops know what they're doing. The Scan issues aren't entirely on Burton or Flax, both of whom have improved from last year.

Like others have said, Burton isn't perfect, but when he's good, he's pretty dang good. I'm guessing he gets even better, and it might be like a lightbulb turning on.

For his and Leary's sake, I hope I'm right.

Stoops said Cox played great against Vandy, only one miscue he could think of. At least we have something to build around. It would have been interesting seeing a rotation at the guard positions to compare players but I understand they are trying to get the starters all the reps they can to get them better.

Our Oline is DREADFUL. Yenser has to be fired at the end of the season. No question.

No question! Good call! Ha!

The oline will cost us a win or 2.

brilliant

Absolutely dreadful. Going to be our downfall for a second straight season.

Following the flock

Here is someone who actually gets it. Did not follow the flock. Thumbs up!

No you don't. You all have fallen into the agenda trap. He does one thing wrong, it's going to be he has to be benched. Even if he's been fine for the rest of the game. Even if his substitute will be worst. Even if others on the line are playing worst. Some of you find it more important to bitch than hope for Kentucky to do well. Rushing to the keyboard when Dane makes a drop, because thats your online schtick.

i just hope some of you read this and snap out of it.

Another one who gets it. Good.

I’d wager the staff felt pretty good about what Ray showed in his absence.

Someone else gets it.

You saw into the future and supported the players. Impressive comment.

So everyone knows, Flax is SEC offensive lineman of the week. Everyone who had confidence in Jeremy, raise your hand.

From underachiever to SEC lineman of the week. He worked for this. This says as much about the way our program works as anything else I have seen this week.

Let’s hope the OL performs so well against the UGA front seven this Saturday that Leary explodes to win SEC offensive player of the week…not saying that’s what I expect, but that would be awesome and bode well for any chance of an upset this weekend.

We shall see, but w numbers like that, I may have to take back 1/2 the bad things that ai said about Yennie

Only 4 sacks allowed in 5 games. 2022 allowed 47. Amazing improvements.
So here is my question

Was Scangerello that bad? Marquis Cox is rhe only new OLine starter …and Horsey (our best Oline) has been out since opener

Is Coen play calling that much of a difference?

This is sort of unbelievable to me how this groups looks like Stoops best Oline at Ky (maybe 2018 Oline wjtb bunchy, Stenberg etc wound be better)

Did the Oline go away from zone blocking against UF and go to more the power straight ahead scheme?

This is my belief. We just don't have the mobility to run the zone blocking scheme and I believe that we went back to the Hulk Smash man blocking scheme.

UK Oline absolutely kicked Floridas defense ass, who has just kicked UTs ass a couple weeks before. Looks like their starting to gel.

Flax getting five pancakes and the whole line looked really active and focused. Would love to see a similar performance Saturday.

I can't say for sure, but the Davis run were they pulled D Ray and he took Prince U out on the edge was a thing of beauty. They all blovked left and Ray pulled and took out the Edge on the right side creating a huge running lane. They all did their job which at times last year they didn't do. Point at whatever you want to call the problem last year, there were many. They are much improved this year.

I read PFF grades for the UF game and the OL graded horrible. It didn't make any sense. Then even more baffling, they graded the run blocking of every OL in the low 50s to 40s. They said Leary had an avg of 1.2 sec to throw or atleast threw it that fast. Yet, the Pass blocking for almost every guy was in the upper 60s and 70s. Ray and Flax were in the 80s. Absolutely made zero sense. Not saying they were bad in pass pro but they were great in the run game

Here's the thing about it. FL's defense is for real. Even after the butt kicking we administered to them on Saturday, UF is still #2 in the entire SEC in total defense. When you watch the replays, our OL was carving huge running lanes for Davis in the first half. Davis was often untouched until he got to the third level of their defense. We weren't nearly as good in the 2nd half, but the game was basically over by then. Our blocking stats may have deteriorated in the 2nd half, but it shows you how stats can sometimes fog up the bottom line. I would like to see our run blocking stats just from the first half of the FL game.

That’s what it looks like to me. A lot of small problems adding up in 2022, a lot of small solutions adding up in 2023. I hope the OL can build on this through the season. My goodness.

So for the past three seasons, we've been recruiting and teaching outside zone blocking... and then abandoning it during the season. When do we get the linemen needed to run the scheme successfully or just transition to what's worked for the past 7-8 years?

We might not be abandoning wide zone this year, or at least not yet. Coen & the staff analyzed the Florida D, and determined their D line did an excellent job stuffing wide zone. So they adjusted to inside power. Very good call by our young smart OC.

Was it just a 1 game matchup thing? Or will they try power inside Sat night? IMO I'm not sure that is the best method of attack against Georgia. Auburn and to a lesser extent USCjr had sucess on the Dawgs running wide/outside, not the middle.
