This offensive line..

I was all for Yenser getting more time but this offensive line has not improved. I get we have Horsey out. I get we're experimenting with centers.

No excuse for dudes just getting WHIPPED by a mediocre DLine. It's not *just* an assignment issue now, it's a "getting beat" issue.

Maybe I'm just hot from an aggravating game, but it's time the line starts showing improvement.

Dear Mr. Burton, no need to repost the same sh!t you did in the game thread. We all hope Jager Burton and the rest of the o-line get it together, we really do.
No you don't. You all have fallen into the agenda trap. He does one thing wrong, it's going to be he has to be benched. Even if he's been fine for the rest of the game. Even if his substitute will be worst. Even if others on the line are playing worst. Some of you find it more important to bitch than hope for Kentucky to do well. Rushing to the keyboard when Dane makes a drop, because thats your online schtick.

i just hope some of you read this and snap out of it.

Somebody said that happens in a game called football sometimes.

You're awfully shook about this.

Whipped is the appropriate term. I seriously thought it was about scheme last year and our first couple of games this year but we have guys totally whiffing on shit. We’re only going to go as far as the line takes us, they have a week to get better. Surprised Yenser even has a job at this level.

If Yenser is canned at the end of the year, do u all think Drake Jackson is ready for the job?
I don't know if he's ready. Even though he was arguably the best center we've had in the Stoops era and learned from the master of walls, it would be unfair to throw Jackson to the SEC wolves after just two seasons as a GA under someone who's proving to be an underwhelming hire.

To that point, Jackson is already working with the OLine as an assistant. Make of that what you will.

To add some facts to this discussion

4 games played
3 sacks total allowed by UK O lline
5.6 yards per rushing attempt
Against the 4 WORST teams on our schedule.

It’s just the unforced errors that is the source of frustration. Dumb Penalties, not identifying who to block correctly pre-snap, not picking up on stunts ESPECIALLY twists and getting beat off the ball when YOU know the snap count!!!

The potential for this line is NOT being met YET, hopefully it will be.

There is no way that we whiffed on all of these recruits, yet the only decent line play is coming from transfers.

At some point, you have to try a different coach.......that point is now..
Move Gran to O line coach and let Yenser fill an admin role until season ends.

At least Gran knows how to teach run blocking.

Facts are facts, and these don’t look bad. But … like you I try to be realistic and not look at everything through blue tinted glasses.

This team makes some splash plays in the running game. I’m not enough of a football technician to know what to credit those plays to. Yet, through 4 games we haven’t had a single series where we’ve been able to sustain a drive by running the ball then playing off of play action.

There will be a game when we’re ahead by less than a touchdown and will need to run the ball to seal the victory. (I’m not confident in that scenario.) The good news is that in previous seasons a 14-17 point deficit meant the game was over. I can see this team coming back from this type of deficit. It’s built differently than previous Stoops’ teams. If they can run the ball with consistency then this team can be very dangerous.

OLine issue is not so much the pass but the run downs. Some of our guys are stepping back but not pulling as their first step. Never seen that on a run play, not a RPO. We have great SEC Size on the OLINE. Those guys have to get off the line of scrimmage on called run plays. Cannot have the defense 2 yards in our backfield and expect our backs to be able to take a handoff and then avoid the defense. Get the run blocking fixed and we are a good OLine, not big blue wall great but Big Blue Wall good. More than enough to possible dominate a game like today.

To be clear I don't think the O line has been great. Worlds better than last year. Not as good as 2016-2021. But pass blocking anyway is improved.

Maybe against Florida we get Horsey back, Eli gets more comfortable back at C. Perhaps Ray should stay in, at RG in place of Jagger?

He would be a great coach and recruiter

He coached the OL at the end of his Sr yr

To many no yardage plays to start drives- Davis having to stutter step immediately
If not for Leary pocket presence which is Extraordinary we would have numerous sacks allowed
Yes he is frustrating with his control on passes
He over throws imo trying to hard to force the ball in to tight windows
Stoops cannot be happy with this group
If the current run game is not producing on first down we need try a different run scheme

To be fair we have a lot of negative runs but we also get big chunks. Just not efficient. Leary also saves a lot of plays man

O-line isn’t the best but Leary had time today, he just didn’t make good throws overall.
The pass protection has been fair ,its the inability to move anyone off the line to run the ball that is the problem. Several of our line men flat got whiped by smaller linemen today. Not near enough " want to" from these guys

I mentioned that same thing to my crowd during the game. Eddie was part of that image we built for a tough running game. Of course it didn’t hurt we had Lynn Bowden for part of it.

We should be spending on the best online coach we can find honestly. Stoops has the resources and pay to get a quality coach now. His teams rely and SEC play relies on line play all year. I know we need to focus NIL on skill positions but without a good line we won’t win anything.

So….

We’ve protected Leary fine. He needs to get rid of the ball when more than five are sent.

Running the ball we are averaging over five yards a carry and 131 yards per game.

The only nit pick I have is we tend to hit chunk runs and not sustain at times ..and we are a penalty heavy unit. But that unit is less of an inside then Qb and Wr units

Yenser was Oline coach at Kansas for three years and they won three games in three years. Don't know why it would be any better now.

A huge hallmark of the 21-22 season was Coen’s decision to simplify the scheme sometime after the first few games. If there’s room for him to streamline now, I expect he will. In the meantime, you gotta hope this lineup can develop some continuity. Between Horsey’s injury, Burton’s shift to guard/Cox’s shift back to center, and the ongoing rotation at the RT spot, there’s been a lot of turnover on the front five.

Coaching can be a huge factor in the effectiveness of an OL.

One of my clients is the father of Sam Jones, who played at ASU, was 2nd team all Pac12, I think, and spent a few years on NFL practice squads.

One of the years he was trying to make the 53 man roster, he was in Denver when Mike Munchak was the OL coach. He told me that working with Munchak he improved his technique a mile. Even though he'd had good coaches at college and in the NFL, Munchak was an encyclopedia of how to play OL: hand position, footwork, leverage, reading the defense, etc. Sam said in just the few weeks, he learned more from Munchak than all other OL coaches previously. There is a LOT to playing the OL at a high level and not just anyone can play or coach at a high level.

All this to say, Yenser just may not be good enough. The OL is performing better but still not up to the standard we've come to expect. I'd love for Drake to one day be the OL coach, I can't imagine he's learned enough at this point to be a top flight SEC OL coach.
