This is ridiculous in Sec

Lol. Why do you think that. Joe millionaire ain’t going away.

Frankly, though, the thread is ironic: we lost no players of note to transfer, finished among the national leaders for
Those incoming, including conference rival Vanderbilt’s best back, and one of the top QB’s in the ACC.

If the rich are getting richer, we must be rich.
Agreed. Money has value, but so does opportunity to develop and staff success rate of getting players to the NFL. I've taken less money and I have advised people as a search consultant to take less money for some specific roles. It's easier to buy players, but it doesn't mean we can't compete and I like where Stoops has positioned himself. We just need NIL to be average to good. It can't be nonexistent.

Players shouldn’t be permitted to transfer to teams within their conference. I know, I know….UK got the RB from Vandy but that’s how I feel.

Very true. The portal benefits teams who are shrewd talent evaluators AND good recruiters. I believe we have both skills on our staff.

What's clear is anyone having success is you think they are cheating. Bringing in grad transfers is legal, when our season is over I bet you will have no problem when UGA has double digit number of players entering the portal.

What I thought about the cheating, East to call someone a cheater. What exactly is UGA doing to be dirty, you seem to know something? Kids coming to UGA couldn't have anything to do with the number of kids UGA is putting in the NFL, that Athens is one of the top college towns in the country, or Kirby be one of the top 2-3 recruiters in the country. No just easier to say UGA is having success because they are dirty. Talk about delusional, UK is in the middle of its most successful stretch in 40 years both on and off the field, is it dirty? I prefer to think Stoops is doing a good job, but going by your logic he is running a dirty program.
I agree grumpy that UGA isn’t wrong for using the portal But….

1. It’s still bad for college imo of how it’s being use
2. You tend to be quick to hammer in Tennessee, Auburn and a few other schools that entice kids to portal with Nil $$$$

Do you feel the same way towards those schools now that UGA is back in Portal business?

I knew you’d have input. And I don’t blame Kirby a bit. Nor should we vilify Lincoln Riley for openly buying players or even the spat jimbo and Saban for into on who was buying the most players You were criticizing Tennessee who was said to be openly courting the mizzou Wr …..but you get him and I guess you’re ok with it now?

1. You are 100 percent dead on UK enjoyed Wandale Robinson last year and he was not a grad transfer. I’m pretty sure boss man fat from LSU sat out a year (that was befor me Covid and the immediate transfer policy). And while UK has been more helped by portal them hurt …I could see that easily flipping down the road to hurting UK as we are not a top tier team

2. But the bigger picture this is sort of dumb if you desire true competition. What little parity college had is all our the window now. Ohio st and Bama trying to buy Drake Maye as Qb, etc,,, it’s all just a glorified AAU team of travel all stars

3. Put yourself in mizzou fan shoes. Why even support your team now? You get a decent player and boom a top tier team in your own conference can pluck him at any time..does that sound close to rational from a mizzou fan perspective?

I just think this model would create a world we don’t even need a football program at mizzou, wake forest, Virginia tech, miss st, Ky etc. and you damn sure don’t need a football program at any non sec or big 10 a school
Is there any proof that it was Bama and OSU? Wouldn't surprise me a bit with OSU but Bama would surprise me a little.

Luther Burden must be getting paid well to stay with Missouri. Cook is an awful passing QB and he seems to be all they got next year too.

This is insane. UGA (and Bama) not only get constant 5 star after 5 star….but now get to go shopping off of Sec rosters their best players

Glorified AAU / Travel ball is thjs is.

And I get UK got NC state Qb….but at least he’s have qualified as a grad transfer. But this is outright cherry picking

Exactly I don’t know how you beat Georgia now. They are getting 5 stars at every position, and if they can pick the best players with experience for other positions they become unbeatable, which they pretty much already are

Good!

Kids should be able to go to school and play where they want, and hopefully get paid for it as well.

It's ridiculous we would cry about it. It's their lives.
Some of us see it differently. It is about making a commitment and following through w that commitment. I understand most coaches show little to no commitment anymore, but at least the players did. And as fans, that is what we cared about. Should fans support someone different every year because some team offers the fans more $? There used to be a value on loyalty. With all due respect and just my opinion, your comment illustrates what is going wrong in our society.

Georgia and Bama’s portal gains are evil.

Kentucky’s portal gains are just right!
You make a really strong argument. Since there is zero fault with your logic, i am in 100% agreement w you. (That and 2 dollars MIGHT get you a coke someplace these days...)

UGA doesn't have that kind of money. Our biggest booster is a liquor distributor. I wish we had a booster that would throw a few mil into the recruiting chest. You notice how AU's recruiting has fallen off the last couple of years? NIL killed their recruiting because it isn't cheating now. UT was the one that paid a kid 8m to go there reportly, they seem pretty proud of that and not denying it. AU is claiming UK gave Leary 4m for 1 year, I don't believe that, but osu claiming UGA gave a kid millions is believed by most. AU is sour grapes, just like the osu claim.

I think the way the portal is being used is the worst thing to happen to college athletics. But if other teams are using it, you do too or fall behind. It's a legal option, I dislike it, but feel if you want to maintain success you have to use it.

Fans usually have some sort of long term interest in a school or team. They attended the school or were raised by parents with an interest. Or maybe as a kid they just liked the nickname “purple people eaters” so they became a Minnesota Vikings fan. For players and coaches it’s simply an opportunity, it’s a job. Do you, would you stay at your current job if a better opportunity came along?

This is a well written argument! But I just don't agree with you.

1. A 17 year old should not be tied to a 4 year commitment.

2. Coaches recruit over kids all the time. So if a kid goes to a college and sees the coach would rather find someone else to play, I don't think the kid should have to suffer the next three years because he made a commitment.

3. There are a multitude of things that could be going on in his personal life at school that could be making his experience horrible and would benefit from a transfer.

4. Any day these kids could endure a career ending injury, if they have an opportunity now to make money, the should absolutely be allowed to take full advantage. So if going to another school is how they can make that happen, by all means let them do that.

5. Kids can make a commitment to a school but the coach can turn out to be something different than what they committed to. The coach can be a jerk, not give them playing time, play them in a different role than what he promised, etc....

A kid should never be forced to stay when the coach turns out to be different than what he was during the recruiting process.

6. The ability to play professionally can depend on how the coach uses them, if they are not in a good fit, you want the kid to stay and give up his chance to play pro, all cause he made a commitment at 17 years of age????

I could go on and on.

I do think a kid should finish out the season, never quit on your team mid season. But after each season, they should be allowed to reevaluate the situation and make choices accordingly.

And if one school is willing to pay a kid more than another school, that is awesome. Let the free market work so these athletes can get what they are worth.

I don't disagree with you in principle, but at least half of these kids are 18, so that really isn't a good argument, they are judged to be old enough to lay down their life defending the country.

Yes coaches are under a contract and can leave early anytime they choose. But that move isn't a free move, someone is paying a lot of money for a coach going to another school as his contract has to be bought out, not a good argument for free movement.

Kids have never been forced to stay, they have always been able to transfer, but like the coaches those moves weren't free, it cost a year.

If it comes to bidding wars its no longer college football, I will find something else to watch, pickleball may get a new fan.

Every kid faces derecruitment no matter where they sign. WL wasn't playing at PSU, comes to UK and is a top QB prospect, but if he can't cut down on his turnovers he will be just another Stat. But transferring was definitely good for him, and UK.

Well stated!

I think reforms could be had when a coach leaves then all the kids can leave without sitting a year. Etc.

But this current model is sort of dumb and many fans are gong to leave

Buyouts for coaches are case by case. Pretty sure as neither Cal or Stoops have buyouts in their contracts.
Recruiting is and always has been a bidding war. The only difference today is that more of it is above board and more visible.

Free market for players is here to stay! It's never going back. Players will be transferring much more frequently, which means schools will be recruiting transfers and basically bidding on them. This will get more and more business like for college athletes. If that effects your ability to enjoy the game, you might as well stop watching now. It's only going to keep progressing, it's never going back to the way some of you want to restrict these kids.

I don't believe that, I had a few kids who were highly ranked kids over the years, signed P5 scholarships and none were ever offered money to attend a particular school. I think its insulting to think every kid is on the take. UGA has a sr when he signed he showed up to school in a new Raptor, right away it was a "gift" according to some, nevermind his mother is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and his dad is over the harbor at Savannah

I agree it's never going back to where it was even 5 years ago. It's looking more and more like players are going to be considered employees. Which brings other questions, if someone has 4 years, 5 with a RS, when that time is up and he is forced to retire for lack of a better term, will he have earned a pension? When a player isn't quite good enough for the NFL, but was a very good college player, making low 6 figure NIL, will he be able to sue for more eligibility?

Poor kids might get 500 yards next year. I’d go UGA if I was a DL or a LB but BMac is a terrible WR coach and that offense is bad for WRs.

I want to be sure I understand this. Stetson wasn't a very good QB, McClendon is a terrible coach, UGA WR don't catch the ball, correct? How do you explain UGA being 3rd in the SEC in passing offense, behind 2 air raid offenses, more than Bama with Brice Young a Heisman winner and possible number 1 draft pick. Doing that when seldom throwing the ball in the 2nd half. Really hard to accept the QB, WR and WR coach are all bad with those results. I realize you never mentioned Stetson but it's been mentioned before he was very good, yet has the best resume in college. He is small, that's his only negative.

Great questions!

Moreover, given that NIL is taxable income, how long before all the schollis and other benefits get taxed?

Bowl swag taxed as income?

Your post assumes the players will soon be employees of the schools. Should UK and UGA push for this, to share the largess from the new TV contracts, at least leveling (somewhat) the field with oil rich schools in Oklahoma and Texas?

Players shouldn’t be permitted to transfer to teams within their conference. I know, I know….UK got the RB from Vandy but that’s how I feel.
So no to Jaquez Jones and Keidron Smith, etc?

Should you not be allowed to hire Coordinators from in conference?

I don’t believe for one second coaches are waiting till a player hits the portal before making contact. Not. One. Bit. Hell, Stoops basically said BB already had NIL offers from other schools and he isn’t in the portal. Anyone that thinks in season recruiting isn’t happening surly is not paying attention. I think that’s the biggest difference from transfer in and sit out a year compared to now.

Well he’s played one more game than most QBs. He was also in the game late against bad teams like Kent State and Samford. 2 of your top 3 receivers are not WRs because it’s a dink and dunk offense. There were like 4 games where UGA didn’t even have a passing TD.

We not buying players contray to what tOSU writer claimed. Last game we lost Bzma put it on us, officials had nothing to do with it, different story when they beat us in 17. You have evidence of any wrong doing turn us in.

But the discussion K_Time and I are having is about the portal. I don't like it, but it's part of the game just like TV timeouts, don't like them either. It's not BAMA,UGA or OSU'S fault players are allowed to transfer without sitting out a year, it's not their doing that NIL is being used to get players to attend school.

But I don't believe gor a minute May was offered 5m, AU saying UK did more than that for Leary, don't believe that either.
You could build and feed a nice size country with the money Georgia has spent buying players the last 7 years. Haha. Kentucky may get you a nice small town from eastern Kentucky , but Georgia would get you Texas. Lmao.

So, what politician is going to suggest that scholarships be taxable?

The economy sucks and things aren't getting better. They want to tax the rich even more. Pretty soon the rich will stop giving money to these schools and players if this doesn't change. I just can't see people blowing millions on college players like this for very long. It's one thing to donate a few million to the school occasionally. It's another to have to pump millions into them yearly to keep buying players. I just don't see it lasting and some major changes will have to take place or college sports as we know it will be dead.
Huh? How old are you? There have been 8 recessions in my lifetime. Economic ebbs and flows are pretty common. The “rich” have never paid a smaller share of their income than they do today.
Why do you think college sports would be dead if people stopped paying players? Were they paid for the 100+ years before NIL?

A lack of height doesn't preclude one from being the No. 1 pick in the draft, as Kyler Murray can attest to. There is a different reason besides that why Bennett is very unlikely to get drafted- he doesn't have NFL tools and height is only one tool. But he's an outstanding college quarterback, no doubt about that.

Bennett does what good QBs do late in their career. He feeds the check downs. It’s why a RB, a TE and a slot WR who is a slant/mesh king like a poor man’s Edelman is their 3 main targets. He also has a ton of yards from shovel passes on sweeps from 2 of those guys.

And that is all i care about, if he gets a shot good for him, but if not, I am ok with that too.
