Thiero appears to get it more than the coach

His effort was about the only reason we were in it at all. Lots of blame to go around yesterday. Thiero was one of the only bright spots in my book.

He generally plays with effort, but there was absolutely no effort in that first part of the clip from Gonzaga running ball screens. His lazy defense on 22 gave 22 an easy lane to make the pass to Ike. Defensive intensity has to be 100% not 95 or 90. He's not the only one of course that isn't 100% on that end.

“I coach for the names on the back of the jersey—not the front.”

Calipari quote from 2013
I respect the hell out of the tradition-I'm lucky to be a part of it and I've got the best job in basketball-but I don't do what I do for the commonwealth of Kentucky, for the university, for the legacy of the program, or for the greater glory of Big Blue Nation. There was a time I coached partly for myself-for status, respect, money, wins. But I don't do that anymore, either. Good for those coaches who get to seven hundred, eight hundred, or even a thousand wins, but I'm not staying in it that long. I can promise you my record will not be on my tombstone.

I coach for the names on the back of the jersey-not the front.

I agree. He is a shell of his former self.
He is a total fraud in every sense of the word!!!! Any win this team gets is in spite of him. He has no plan, no lineup continuity, no idea on how to adjust, no idea on how to effectively manage his roster, no idea on how to draw up a winning play, no idea how to teach multiple defensive sets, no idea how to consistently get his shooters open look, or to shut down what the opposing team is effectively doing. He doesn’t know how to do practically anything when it comes to actual in game coaching which is why I will contend he is the actual worse in game coach in the game today.

Go watch that video clip of UK getting toasted on defense. Thiero was a big reason why.
Thiero has had several awesome plays recently but I agree with you, he has had many defensive breakdowns, especially against the end line inbounds pass. I think the effort is there but it seems there is a defensive disconnect. He will improve but it needs to be very soon.

Thiero can dunk with authority. He got some hops for alley oops. Kinda makes Bradshaw look not as good.

That sounds like a coaching problem

I have a hard time believing a Calipari taught zone defense is going to stop a Mark Few team. Few would just make an adjustment and eat us alive because our team lacks discipline on defense.
Then you're ignorant. Gonzaga shot 4-18 from 3 and killed us in the paint. Your devotion to defending Cal at all costs is astounding. You basically said our players suck. LOL

Im not defending Cal. I literally asked you if you believe Calipari can coach a zone defense that would be able to stop a Mark Few offense. I think it would lead to a worse outcome.

The hype surrounding Bradshaw was world class. The number of stars assigned to him was the best. Cal buys in and recruits the guy but alas ... he can't live up to the billing, but Cal is hell bent on getting him into the draft after one season, regardless of the damage done not only to Bradshaw but the PROGRAM by refusing to be honest with him and encourage additional years to gain experience before entering the draft. Cal can't do that, his "system" isn't designed for his OAD to have a year two. Bradshaw enters his name in draft or transfers. Transferring to another school, with coaching, would be in his best interest. Entering the draft too early is very high-risk. This is Cal's wholesale OAD system. Wash, rinse, and repeat as the PROGRAM CRUMBLES. Does this system really sound like "players first"?

Collateral damage

Thiero is our best defender, best finisher, strongest driver, best rebounder, handles the ball much better than any of our other forwards, and is now shooting the three better than Edwards, Bradshaw, and Mitchell. But, most importantly, he’s a great teammate who wants to win and gives his best effort every possession.

Collateral damage
Collateral damage is the price paid to feed Cal's ego. The narcissist doesn't care about collateral damage. It's not about ALL the "kids", but only the ones who are good enough, after one year, to be drafted in the lottery. That is what feeds his ego, and he cares about nothing else.

I wish they all played with the heart Thiero plays with

Few kicked Cal’s a** last season in a blowout. Just another coach to give cal a yearly beating.

I will say, as sincerely as I can, any UK player that demonstrates that they truly care about this PROGRAM, will always have my support and admiration. ALWAYS. This is at the root of why I cannot stand John Calipari as coach of the Program. Apart from his SICK and TWISTED priorities, the man CANNOT COACH and makes BREATH-TAKINGLY stupid decisions. He apparently also steals his neighbors weed-wacker.

Cals lack of coaching is why. If this was the first UK team to be completely incapable of stopping the high ball screen easy entry pass that would be one thing. This has been a problem for years.
It’s not a player issue, it’s a scheme issue. Cal plays one way, and that’s it. He has no answer when that one way doesn’t work.
