The notion that Duke falls off after K

They had played in 4 final fours and two title games before K. So they had history. I realize Indiana had two titles before Knight. But that program went down for multiple reasons. Knight was kept on way to long, the game had passed him by. Then the crazy Shit with his firing and all that. So they had been down a while. Then hiring terrible coaches and keeping them too long. Duke will still be a hot commodity and right at the top of college basketball with us, UNC, and Kansas when K retires. I hate defending Duke but they're gonna remain among the top basketball programs.
Is it okay if I don't agree?

Well he is about to be 72. I would think he will hang it up within 3-5 years. I would guess it would be announced pre-season.

It is totally dependent on the hire. UNC was very fortunate to have had Roy to fall back on. Things were not great with them after Dean's retirement.

This has been something I've brought up on the board before in regards to critics of Cal. Gone are the days where you can make a major mistake in hiring the wrong guy and expect to be ok. Look at UCLA and IU now. They were powers and are like Nebraska football now.

Cal coming to UK when he did was a major blessing and he has my support 100% until he hopefully retires from here. If Mitch made the wrong hire 10 yrs ago we could be in same boat as IU...it can happen people. 5 years of mediocrity and you are an afterthought.

Duke may be ok, but unlike UNC they don't have an option to go to like Roy Williams. I don't see them having the same buying power as UK in terms of bringing in a big name.

Mitch didnt hire nor want Cal at UK when it was time to interview. Cal wasnt his choice if I remember correctly.

How often does a HOF coach leave on their own terms and is immediately followed by a great coach with no drop off? It is pretty rare. Probably even more so most everywhere but here (since we have titles under more coaches than anyone else). Most of our drop offs are still HOF coaches.

I have a hard time seeing Duke not dropping way off. There's no place to go but down. Plus with the one and done system in place (if it doesn't end before Coach K leaves), the next coach will get left a roster with most of the talent gone.

I imagine Coach K will not announce his retirement until late in his last season so they can still try and get a number of highly ranked players signed for the next coach during the early signing period. He will probably pull a Wooden and announce during the tournament to get an even more favorable whistle.

You can guarantee that the next hire will be a former Dukie because K will not allow anyone else. Then the question becomes which will it be? The one I could see being somewhat successful is Mike Brey. I think the rest would be like Mike Davis at IU and run the program into the ground within a few years. Now after that would they go outside the Coach K tree and hire someone? Maybe but it would probably depend on if K is still around or not.

When K-turd retires, I expect him to name his replacement. He has the largest ego on the planet, so there is no way that he steps aside without making sure his hand-picked successor is in place. I think he will pick Wojo or Chris collins.

Keep seeing references to money and boosters, etc. None of that will matter at all if they hire the wrong guy to coach the team. Period. You have the right guy, you will win and your program will flourish. You hire the wrong guy, it goes south. That truth is universal, it does not discriminate. It's true at Morehead State, it's true at KU/UK/UNC/Duke. Now, if you're among the elite, and you hire the right guy, that's when resources matter, and you can have a monster. Duke will allow K to have a major say in who succeeds him (which he's earned, by the way). Is he going to hire someone outside the family? I cannot see it - although, obviously, that's a guess. Is "the right guy" one of the Duke/K family? again, I can't see it. Hence, Duke will do what IU and UCLA did. Fall from the mighty. They can recover from that, just like IU and UCLA could have/can. But just like it's harder to get in shape than it is to stay in shape, getting to elite (or back to elite) is harder than staying there......

Duke is the next UConn post Calhoun. UConn was nothing until Calhoun and ESPN came in.
