I'll never forget when good ole C.M., in defense of his good ole buddy Bill Curry, told me and thousands of others after the 1994 football season that we could find another program to support. Sickening that UK's football field bears his name. Guess we can thank another one of his good ole boys, Larry Ivy, for that farce.

There's a very persistent rumor among nearly all UK professors that the basketball program takes money away from academics.
It's completely horse poop. Basketball and football are both self sustaining. They GIVE a ton of money to academics, as well as to our other less popular sports which those snooty professors tend to prefer. But this rumor persists among most (not all) professors and is absolutely gobbled up by their typical students that slurp on them. It's the kind of thing that makes great air time for the sort of people who don't check their targets.
I took the original guy's post to mean public funds shouldn't be used for athletics facilities. Which I agree with. Our state has more pressing issues to attend to.

I can not disagree with this statement more. I was around back in the day he was at Transy, AL, and Vandy. His dislike for UK was unmatched at the time. He threw "Moon" Manual under the bus and the kid never recovered.

I always found CM to be disingenuous. Like a doctor that tries to pretend they care but just can't quite pull it off. Both he and Rex Chapman are frankly two that I would prefer never see around the UK program again.
Every generation has its own GOB network. C.M. Newton was (rightly, I think) heralded for cleaning up the Shively/Lancaster/Hagan-era booster network.

In Pitinos book " born to coach " he specifically says that Newton contacted him about the UK job and Pitino told him he wasn't interested . CM had moved on and had his sights on PJ Carlisimo and it was David Rozelle that reached out to Pitino and convinced him to come to UK . But CM sure takes credit for that hire . Lol
Given that David Rozelle was the reason Pitino was hired , let's look at your buddy CM 's other accomplishments . Hired Bill Curry . He was fired , too late I might add . Hired Bernadette Mattox . She was fired . Hired Tubby Smith , opinions vary . Hired Hal Mumme , he was fired and we were placed on probation . Feathered the nest so his good friend Larry Ivy could ease into the UK Athletics Director chair , he was fired . For this cm gets his name on the field , a home in a tropical paradise , and along with his retirement , a big fat salary as some kind of advisor to the University of Kentucky .
I think the GOB network was pretty much set way back in the aftermath of the scandal of the late 80's. Perhaps there are down sides, but the up sides greatly out weigh them. His son got the big commission on the Nike contract. It's a fact and not selective memory. Pitino may have gone no matter what, but CM never countered and didn't make him pay the buy out. SLEAZEBALL.
Also CM was the guy with selective memory about his 132 tickets that he got tons of money and favors. Wonder if his memory ever reported it to IRS.

I'm sorry, but CM Newton was an ambassador for UK and when you are connected in that way good things happen for you. This is Kentucky, and we take great care of our own.
I also love the grandstanding of people who act like they wouldn't use their connections to better themselves or their families. Half of the people who bitch about it would be the worst "GOB" you ever saw. Just a bunch of hating mouth pieces who aren't "GOB" but sure are "FOS".

They are not. I was there. I was also there under the stands in a hallway one evening when UK had beaten CM at Vandy yet again and he threw some terrible statements at UK. Program, players, coaches and fans. A reporter even asked him if all this was on the record. Those are the facts.
I was basically responding to this guy:
"I am 46. I have a 19 year old son. I hope his generation sees the folly in spending major money on big time athletics and big time athletics take a bath."

I assumed that guy wasn't talking about using state funds for athletic facilities, because big time athletics certainly aren't going to "take a bath" if they don't get state funding for athletics facilities, since they are self supporting now. (At least they are at UK; who knows what the books are really like at UL with all the corporate and state deals they have, although since the ACC allows alcohol sales they'll probably be all right in either case too.)
I'm 46 too and I felt someone should show my generation is not entirely brainwashed with the socialist kool-aid. Forcing an enterprise that not only sustains itself but also donates a lot of money to academics to "take a bath" is not the way to fix anything.
State funding is a separate issue and I won't get into it.
Wonder what the time limit is on the non-disclosure agreement Casey signed in that settlement? He could write a book and sell every copy printed, in KY at least.
We all know something wasn't right about $1000 in cash in a package that just magically popped open. UK and Casey were set up. Probably in retaliation for some recruiting incident that happened on the West coast. At least that's always been the rumor.
CM Newton? I'm not a fan. But, I am a fan of changing the name of the field at CWS.
